#1 UK Crime thread: Criminals freed on bail in UK commit 60,000 crimes in 2012

British criminals released on bail by the UK’s justice system committed more than 60,000 crimes in 2012, a newspaper report said.


From among those freed on bail for other crimes, 56 criminals were responsible for murder in 2012, which marked a 37% rise as compared to figures registered in 2011, the Daily Mail reported, adding that 16 criminals were also guilty of manslaughter.

According to figures the paper obtained from the Ministry of Justice, 684 criminals freed on bail were responsible for violent assaults.

The figures showed people on bail also committed 111 rapes last year, in addition to 166 sex offences against children and 6,372 burglaries.

“Reoffending has been too high for too long and we are introducing significant reforms to the way offenders are rehabilitated and managed in the community,” said justice minister Jeremy Wright.

“From 2015 all prisoners will for the first time receive a minimum 12 months supervision on release and high-tech GPS satellite tags will also allow us to keep a much closer eye on them”, added the minister.

The comments came as murder rates among bailed criminals have soared dramatically and other crimes such as violent assaults and child sex abuse have also registered a relative increase.
