I read that he banned all state flags in order to discourage secessionism. I can see that happening here in the US.

Getúlio Vargas, in his first government of 15 years, abolished the flags of the Brazilian states, and kept only the Brazilian national flag. |

There are even street names and statues of him to this day. Even towns were renamed after him.

After Getúlio Vargas' suicide, the Communists tried in every way to erase Getúlio, but Brazil still maintains numerous streets, avenues, statues and even a higher education and research establishment, the Fundação Getúlio Vargas, FGV. |

Getúlio Vargas governed in two periods:
From 1930 to 1945; when he came to power through an armed revolution, the Revolution of 1930, and was deposed by the military in 1945. He then governed from 1951 to 1954, this time democratically elected, and was forced to commit suicide in 1954, to avoid being arrested and humiliated , and also to avoid a civil war. |
