Post Woman to stand trial over accusation of racist remark

A Martock woman has been ordered to stand trial next week accused of making a racist remark to one of her neighbours.

Claire Lizzie Barnes allegedly shouted abuse at the victim in a parking row saying, "You people always park here" and "why don't you just all go back".

The 27-year-old defendant, of Newtown, appeared in the dock before Somerset Magistrates, sitting at Yeovil.

She pleaded not guilty to a charge that on September 28 at Martock, with intent to cause Jose Manzanillo harassment, alarm or distress, she used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour, and the offence was racially aggravated.

She also denied a second similar offence on the same date without the racial element.

Prosecutor Julyan Stephens told the court that the victim felt he was being targeted due to his nationality but Barnes claimed she had not used the language alleged.

Following a review of the case it was adjourned until Tuesday January 10 when a trial will take place and until then the defendant was given unconditional bail.
