Default Transit of the Planet Mercury

The planet Mercury is currently passing in front of the sun. I took the following video:

That's cool, Nikola. As you know, Mercury is the most difficult planet to observe given it's close proximity to the Sun. I have only seen it with my own eyes once in my lifetime just for a short time after sunset. Copernicus, if I'm not mistaken, never saw Mercury at all since he lived prior to the invention of the telescope.

And here's some appropriate reading on a cold winter's night for such a hot subject as this:

I heard about this on the radio. I think they said you needed special glasses to see this.

Prior to today I had only seen Mercury once myself, right around sunset. Of course, Mercury is a naked-eye object that doesn't require a telescope to see.

You need a solar filter, eclipse glasses, or #14 welding glass.

Talking cool stuff

Mercury just before transiting our sun ...image from the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly unit (SDO/AIA) on 11/11/2019 123434 UTC.

More info on the SDO:

I saw the transit in 2016, today was the last opportunity to see it until 2032.

Cheers

There will be a good opportunity for viewing Mercury early this month (February 2020).
