Polish officers enjoyed some cultural life at Oflag VII-A

Two Frenchmen have posted surprising photos of life in a Nazi war camp that show POWs dancing, sporting costumes, and playing music, Der Spiegel reports. Reports of Polish officers enjoying a cultural life in German WWII camps have often been dismissed as exaggeration, but these photos of life at Oflag VII-A, a camp in Murnau, southern Bavaria, seem hard to refute. "The prisoners were treated well, at least as much as that can be said under these circumstances," confirms Murnau historian Marion Hruschka.

Indeed, the Nazis showed off Murnau's "Oflag"—a POW camp for officers—to the International Red Cross as a "model camp," says Hruschka. But it wasn't always so rosy: Several prisoners were shot and Jewish officers had to live in a camp ghetto. As for the pics, they ended up in France, where a teenager spotted them in 1999 sitting on a garbage bin. He and his father, Alain Rempfer, later posted them online and heard from many family members of the Polish POWs. "Some of them recognized their fathers, grandfathers, or uncles in the pictures," says Rempfer.
