It will be interesting to see how this thing fairs in the harsher climates, like the northeast winters.

That would kill the range on the electric vehicle. Until battery technology gets to a certain point, four wheel drive is pretty much out of the question unless you want a boat anchor with 50 miles of range. Even with the leading edge Lithium-Iron quick charge batteries you'd at best get 100 miles of range with 10k in batteries alone.

The Tesla Model S was on tour and making a stop in Toronto. Went there this afternoon to take some (lots of) pictures and bore the Tesla Motors techies with even more questions. Could tell one of those guys (the one with crossed arms in first photo) just wanted to run away from me after 20 minutes.

First some underbelly shots for the geeks and nerds. Kind of reminds me of an RC toy car once you take the top cover off.

The electric motor is the left half (the cylindrical shape part between the wheels), differential in the middle, inverter and other electronics in the right half.

With flat batteries the center of gravity is actually below the wheel axles. I have a feeling that the performance version of the Model S would smoke a BMW M5 in a high speed slalom. But that remains to be seen.

Those long double octagonal structures on each side are for front crumple zone. It's supposed to have very good crash test rating.

The batteries and the electric motor heat up during driving that's why it still has a radiator at the front but note how thin it is. Apparently the Model S has less radiator area than a normal internal combustion engine.

Massive 21" rims. Actually makes the car look good.

Lots of space in the back trunk.

And here is the front trunk, aka the frunk again. How long before they use the Model S in a gangster movie and have them stuff bodies in there? Would make a nifty promo for the Model S.

That netted hole area goes about a foot or so inside.

Bottom of the car is essentially flat giving it the lowest drag ratio of any current production sedan.

Now that's a touchscreen. Even though the car is not in production quite yet, people are already coding apps for it. You'll be able to, for example, set the cabin temperature through your iPhone or android device and activate the heater at desired time. One of the Tesla guys also told me that apps will get access to things like real-time wheel RPM, steering angle, etc. which is what I'll want.

Can you just imagine 50 million electric cars being plugged into
the power grid after returning from work. The power grid would
collapse into a nation wide blackout. If electric cars become
common place the power companies will have a major overhaul
ahead to provide capacity for this peak load.

To much fanfare the Tesla Model S deliveries begin.
http://www.teslamotors.com/model-s-has-arrived
When was the last time people got this excited about an American automobile? Pretty enthusiastic crowd.

The Model S, it's just sexy looking, as far as cars can be sexy.

Just hope they had real engineers working on it, instead of some possible affirmative action dimwits like at GM who still can't get it right (http://autos.sympatico.ca/auto-news/...over-fire-risk) after 100 years. The only two remaining major milestones that have to be reached are the battery energy density and recharging times. And it looks like both of them have already been solved by Dr Harold Kung and his team at Northwestern University (http://vnnforum.com/showthread.php?t=135664).

If they want to truly be green, they would have to figure out a way to charge the car with solar power. Possibly have a few panels in your backyard that charge and store energy in batteries, that then transfer it to the car when you hook it up. During any conversion process, I understand some energy will be lost.

After reading that, I cant think of why a sane person would buy the Tesla over a BMW M5. Maybe there's a reason why this was the #1 most shorted stock earlier this year.

2012 Tesla Model S
0-60 4.3 s, 4.0 s with 1ft rollout
1/4 mile 12.6s @ 108.3 mph
60-0 108 ft
Slalom 66.8 mph
Skidpad 0.86 g
Curb weight 4,650 lbs
Top speed 130 mph

2013 BMW M5
0-60 4.5 s, 4.3 s with 1ft rollout
1/4 mile 12.5 s @ 115 mph
60-0 111 ft
Slalom 68.9 mph
Skidpad 0.93 g
Curb weight 4,380 lbs
Top speed 190 mph

With almost 300 more pounds to pull, the Tesla Model S performance numbers are very respectable, even, or better said especially when compared to one of the best sport sedans in the world - BMW M5.
Besides finding ways to increase energy density and reducing recharging times, the dudes who design rechargeable batteries also need to find out how to make them lighter. Although, the heavy Model S should have good performance in snow. The extra weight helps the tires bite into snow.

Consumer Reports gives the Tesla Model S 99 out of a 100, the highest score ever.
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/m...view/index.htm

With a quiet electric motor, sadists can take more pleasure listening to the tires scream in pain.

Electric cars are not the answer right now.

Gas cars work very well. They just need mamsie pansies from governments to butt out of the auto industry. The consumers will decide what they want to drive.

BTW: Consumers report is a bunch of Kike Commie Fags. They have big time agendas going on there.

I can post videos if even electric bicycles beating pocket rocket hotrods in a drag race. There is simply no match for electric power. Even electrifying Himmler's BMW SS1 will beat anything out there:

Default Audi funds restoration of a production electric panel wagon:

Unlike modern electric vehicles, the following was able to deliver during an entire workday, without needing to get recharged in between. This particular built in 1956 wagon managed its tasks, with the help of the location of service being nearly completely flat. This way, the over 600 lb. battery pack could be of no detriment through uphill service:

...Targeted to public utility companies, battery manufacturers and other commercial users willing to accept a range of 80 kilometers (roughly 50 miles) at a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour (just under 25 MPH), the Elektro Schnellaster substituted a five kilowatt (6.7 mechanical horsepower) electric motor for the standard DKW van’s 900-cc, 32-horsepower two-stroke triple. Power was supplied by two removable trays of lead-acid batteries, providing a combined output of 80 volts and a capacity of 200 amp-hours...
