We’ve got a few preview clips from the show to share with you today. In them you’ll get “a taste of the intense drama” the show will bring. The next two previews introduce some of the main characters: “the warrior shield maiden, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and the ruler, Earl (Gabriel Byrne). One, fighting for what she believes and the other fighting to hold onto the power he can’t stand to lose.”

The last clip is, well, you’ll just have to watch it. Vikings premieres 3.3.13 @ 10/9c on History Channel.

The warrior is represented by a woman. I don't know of a single distinguished woman viking, in history. Scandinavian posters?

Otherwise it has a grungy, metallica-fan look. And the lighting seems dull, in many scenes.

They were more frequently healers and magicians as opposed to warriors, in this context, but it wasn't unheard of for women to take up arms. The swedish term for them is 'sköldmö' (shield maiden). While one might find some historical examples of individuals, the era itself have always been a bit short on personal accounts and history of specific individuals etc.

Yeah she's described as a shield maiden and she isn't a central figure to the show or anything.

Well we know they existed and served in such elite units as the Varangian Guard, because the Byzantine chronicler Johannes Skylitzes tells us as much. He doesn't have any reason to distort that. It would also be interesting to see if the mass of unpublished and not widely known sagas have references to female warriors.

Plus remember that among the Scythians; for example, we know of several famous female warriors (not least the last consort of Mithradates) and there is some evidence that the ancient Germans and Gauls also had them as well.

From what I've read, it seems that the more frontier and 'barbaric' groups of the Indo-European peoples in Antiquity and earlier Middle Ages did have a rather different attitude towards women in military roles than one would find in the civilised world of the time. The attitudes of these people generally towards women also seem different. The 'Med' societies, despite their at least partial IE/Aryan origins, generally seem far more inclined towards what would be called male chauvinism in modern vernacular - and that's true of the civilised Indics as well, come to think of it. I am guessing that maybe the still tribal social organisation had a large part to play in this disparity between barbarous and civilised IE/Aryan peoples.

I'd agree in that if you look back to the time before the Romans and Greeks began their large scale conquests: the attitude towards women was based on the position that while they were mothers primarily they were also welcome to be as much as they wanted to be in society. Some have even speculated that part of the reason that Caesar invaded Gaul was; aside from the gold mines, the fact that women played a big role in Gallic culture.

It is a great irony that in Athens a woman should not be seen or heard (the Romans weren't quite that bad but were close), while in Sparta the women frequently walked around naked (as that encouraged them to exercise more and indeed Spartan women were renowned for being extremely beautiful [a-la Helen of Troy nee Sparta]), seem to have largely run the economy and been the principle landowners in practice.

Doubtful: I think it is more to do with the fact that the so-called 'barbarians' lost the initial series of wars against the Greeks and Romans (especially given that Sparta was more in keeping with say the German attitude towards women than the Athenian view of women) who (ironically) imported a lot of their religious beliefs and attitudes from the Middle East.

I don't think Spartan women walked around naked in public, but Spartan girls did dance naked at public gatherings. The physical training, mainly formation dancing, was to make them stronger potential child-bearers. Spartan women are not on record as fighting in battle.

I can check my reference books if you'd like, but I am pretty sure they did as I remember reading it on more than one occasion. The rationale being that; like with Spartan men, nudity meant that you would be more self-conscious about your body meaning in turn that you would push your body more in exercise.

As I read it they both danced naked and with clothes on given that the most famous of their dances (non-nude btw albeit we think scantily clad) involved them jumping up and hitting their bums with their ankles. Hence the nickname they were given (by Athenians I do believe): 'thigh flashers'.

Quite true, but it was also believed to make them better people, work harder and more suitable mates for the Spartiates (who after all were relieved from daily toil in order to hone and perfect their military skills).

Never said they did.

The 3rd episode "Dispossessed" is online now.

I haven't watched it yet. I suppose it's only a matter of time before they introduce a black Viking. Will let you know.

--------

Nevermind I see they're starting now.

I watched the first epidose. Not bad but as always, they have to trow some crap here and there for entertainment value... a pagan shaman ''300'' style, village degenerates, a brother that is not a so good brother, a boat maker who can hear trees... at least they got the hair styles and the rest right. Will watch the next epidode later.

Oh and the Jarl is an asshole

Has anyone noticed the obvious juxtaposition of the show Vikings alongside the show The Bible?

To me it seems intention and deliberate, as if to promote Christianity as being so much better than Dark Ages, Barbarian, White, native pagan religion, as if to say "See how much better this religion that we Jews created for you is compared to your own native religion."
