Russia Passes Dual Citizenship Law, Hoping to Add 10M Citizens

Russian lawmakers from both houses of parliament have passed legislation Friday allowing dual Russian citizenship for foreigners, sending it to President Vladimir Putin’s desk less than two weeks after introducing it.

Lawmakers have described the amendments to Russia’s citizenship law, which among other steps strike down a requirement to renounce one's existing citizenship, as “revolutionary.” Their authors expect up to 10 million people, primarily from Russian-speaking populations in the former Soviet republics, to obtain Russian passports as the country tries to fix its demographic crisis.

there are Russians outside of Russia, but this may help more Kazaks or something rather than Ethnic Russians.

It could be helpful to Ukrainians who wish to relocate to Russia, especially the ones in Ukraine's mostly Russian-speaking Donetsk and Lugansk republics who have been under attack from the Kiev regime since 2014. And also to the Russian diaspora in the rest of the world.

Russian soldier kills three fellow service members in gun and ax attack

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian conscript soldier killed three fellow servicemen on Monday at a military air base after attacking them with an ax and a gun, Russian news agencies reported.

The serviceman shot at officers who had come for a morning inspection at the base in the Voronezh region, around 500 km south of Moscow (310 miles), and then fled the scene, news agencies cited the defense ministry as saying.

There were contradictory reports of what happened next.

Rosgvardia, Russia's national guard, told news agencies that it was searching for the shooter with the help of helicopters and drones.

But the TASS news agency cited an unnamed source in the region's emergency services ministry as saying the soldier had barricaded himself inside the base.

"The soldier fired, using a pistol that he took from an officer. Three people were killed," TASS cited the source as saying.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Such incidents occur from time to time in the Russian military where some conscripts allege brutal hazing from more senior soldiers, a Soviet-era problem the defense ministry says it has stamped out.

A Russian conscript who shot dead eight fellow soldiers at his army base in 2019 said earlier this year that he had been left with no other course of action after conscripts turned his life into a living "hell."

Russian men aged 18-27 are legally required to serve one year in the army. Some Russians go to great lenghts to dodge the draft, in part because of fears of hazing, despite the government's drive to overhaul the military.

After years of relying on Roscosmos to deliver its astronauts to space, Washington now plans sanctions on Russian space agency

Russia's space agency Roscosmos may be hit with US sanctions for the first time ever, as a draft document reveals the Russian Ministry of Defense might become the subject of economic penalties from Washington.

As well as Roscosmos, the proposed sanctions would also target Rosatom, the federal nuclear energy agency, as one of 28 organizations in the aviation, rocket, space, nuclear, instrument and engine industries.

According to news agency RIA Novosti, which has seen the document, the suggested measures were also aimed at Chinese companies who work with Beijing's military.

Out of all the proposed sanctions, measures against Roscosmos would clearly be the most significant, as the US space program has relied on Russian technology for quite some time. From 2011 until earlier this year, Russia's Soyuz spacecraft was the only means for Americans to reach the International Space Station. The American Atlas V launch system also relies heavily on Russian space tech, with its first stage powered by a RD-180 engine.
