Default Anybody else here detest carnival ?

It's 11-11 where I live, in other words the legendary "5th season" is upon us . .

lol

Anybody else detest this?

As for me I just find it boring . . . the whole year people act embittered about their lives , on carnival everyone is suddenly supposed to "cheer" . . .

Sodom and Gomorrah if you ask me.

ALL FOOLISH , BOOZING WITH NO END , NOISE , SEX , EVERYBODY PRATTLING IN THEIR LOCAL DIALECTS . . .

Hmmmm . .

How 'godly' is that supposed to be? ( ironic , since carnival is supposedly so "Christian" . . . . .)

It started out in medieval times as an idea of cheering in order to cast out the "winter demons" . . .

. . . with all cheering , however , people should keep in mind that , after all , they were "mortals". . . .

. . . weird custom . . .

Look , I'm not a philistine in any way and think I can even claim of myself to be a humorous person , but this custom . . .

Just find it hypocritical.

Well , nice carnival though to those who're fond of it . .

At least keep it European. .

You know . . .

. . . as opposed to 'mud-carnival' . .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_Carnival

. . which , I admit , even beats the crap more . . .

Part of European "customs" , whatever . . .

I was looking for a 'neutral' word , lol

May in some places be referred to as 'Mardi Gras'

It is Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, here in the US. Really confined to New Orleans.

I have never been there.

I have heard Italy has the best Carnival.

Yes ,maybe I expressed myself a bit ‘unclear‘ ,lol

In Germany we say ‘Karneval‘ or ‘Fastnacht‘ . .

. .I‘m sure we mean the same thing . .

Rio ,despite not being 100 % European ,has the most famous carnival in the world . .

. .it is also said that carnival is predominantly celebrated in Catholic areas . . since Latin America is practically 100 % Catholic , well . .

( without Latin-America christianity wouldn‘t even be the major religion in the world ; since 50 % of all Catholics of the world live there ; in such a case Islam would be the number one religion . . ) . .

. .since there is a strong French influence in New Orleans ( originally : La nouvelle Orléans . . ) ( Catholic ) , a custom from Europe . .

I don‘t really know about other parts of the U.S. though . . .

Venice also has one of the most famous in the world . . .

The biggest ‘hot spots‘ for carnival in Germany are Köln ( Cologne ) , Düsseldorf , Mainz . . all located at the Rhine ; Rhinelanders love carnival , the biggest celebrations take place at its shores . .

Cologne also happens to be a Catholic archdiocese . . .

Edit : The last vid I had embedded in my original post from back then stems from Colognian carnival . . It is even sung in Colognian dialect , lol ( as are practically all songs sung at carnival season )

I went to an early Mardi Gras jazz brunch today. Somebody I was talking to mentioned "Fastnach." Nice spread of food.

. . the carnival season officially ends today . .

. . there are two big explanations around for carnival . .

. . that it is a custom preserved since 'ancient times' to cast out 'winter demons' , another explanation emphasizes carvial = "festival of the flesh" ( carne , lat. flesh + festival ) . . .

. . probably meant as the last 'feast of the flesh' before Easter and the period of fasting . . . . .

Probably both . . .

I didn't know Europe did Carnival until a few weeks ago when a giant, space-marine Trump appeared in an Italian parade

. . you "didn't know Europe did carnival" ?

. . no offense to you or to other people in "the New World" ( Americas ; I take it you are American , as most members here ? ) but carnival originated in the "Old World" ( Europe ) , lol . .
I cannot blame many in the 'New World' for not being aware of this . . .

Americans took over much from 'the Old Europe' ; starting with christianity to for example St. Patrick's Day ( for the Irish . .) . .

Most Euro-Americans are of German descent ; followed by the Irish . . .

. . in fact the Irish were such a significant group ( growing in the 19th century ) that even a lot of Irish traditions flowed into America and that even the English spoken in North America today has an Irish pronounciation ( as opposed to the often 'held up' British English . .) . .

. . . in the beginning the USA did start out as an English colony.

In the beginning many people in the 'New World' detested the 'Old Europe' and didn't want anything to do with it , which is also why Protestants were favoured over Catholics ( who held allegiance to the Pope in Rome . . .)

. . . like I said , the Irish grew in number in the 19th century even to the point that a lot of 'American Western originals' such as banjo-playing , drinking Whiskey , dancing the reel et al in fact go back to Irish immigrants . . . .

( sorry for posting a stupid techno-vid here but it plays hard on 'American Western' cliches;lol , most ironically these guys are from Sweden .)

. . there's one interesting thing about carnival though . .

It is , in a way , one of the few occasions in the year when nobody frowns upon you when you're drunk . .

. . well ,except maybe for new year . .
