In an Arab first, Bahraini institution joins with State Dept. to combat anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism

BY RON KAMPEAS OCTOBER 25, 2020 7:00 AM

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A Bahraini institute has signed an agreement with the US State Department to combat anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and delegitimization of Israel.

The memorandum of understanding, signed Thursday in Washington, D.C., marks the first time an Arab country has embraced a key Trump administration agenda item, to get countries to include anti-Zionism and some forms of harsh criticism of Israel in their definitions of anti-Semitism. It comes as the Trump administration has in recent weeks brokered a series of normalization agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.

It was signed at a ceremony in a downtown Washington hotel by Elan Carr, the State Department’s anti-Semitism monitor, and Shaikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, a member of Bahrain’s extended royal family who is the chairman of the King Hamad Global Centre for Peaceful Coexistence.

Disgraceful, but hardly surprising considering the influence that jews have in Bahrain. (I've spotlighted this subject in some of my previous posts in this thread.)

Muslim clerical council adopts definition of anti-Semitism that includes vitriol on Israel

OCTOBER 30, 2020 11:03 AM

(JTA) — Citing recent “peace efforts” between Israel and several Muslim countries, an international council of Muslim religious leaders adopted a definition of anti-Semitism that includes some forms of vitriol against the Jewish state.

The Global Imams Council, a body created in 2007 in a bid to heal sectarian divisions in war-torn Iraq, announced Thursday its adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism, which includes demonization of Israel alongside more traditional forms of anti-Semitism. Palestinian and Muslim groups have long opposed the IHRA definition, as have many critics of Israel, who say it limits free speech.

In its statement, the council, which says it has 1,300 imams in its ranks, wrote that it decided on the move “in light of the current peace efforts being achieved throughout the Middle East,” a reference to Israel’s recent agreements normalizing relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.

Israel ratifies deal with UAE allowing first visa-free travel to Arab state

22 Nov, 2020 19:30

Israel has ratified a visa exemption agreement with the United Arab Emirates – its first such deal with an Arab state – as rapprochement between the former foes continues at a rapid pace.

Israeli ministers unanimously voted to support the treaty during a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

The visa exemption agreement had been signed between the sides in Tel-Aviv in October, when two UAE ministers paid a historic visit to Israel. The government in Abu Dhabi reportedly ratified it earlier this month.

This means that Israeli and UAE citizens will be able travel to each other’s countries without applying for entry visas once the agreement comes into force, expected to be within 30 days. Direct flights between the two nations are also scheduled to begin in December.

“This is the first Arab country with which we have signed such an agreement,” Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said before the vote, expressing confidence that it will boost tourism in both directions and strengthen economic ties between Israel and the UAE.

Bahrain minister says he took a stroll around Jerusalem, felt its holy ‘spirit’

Zayed Alzayani compares nighttime walk that brought him near Western Wall and Dome of the Rock to his visits to Mecca and Medina

By RAPHAEL AHREN
3 December 2020, 5:56 pm

The Abraham Accords have brought to Israel a steady stream of dignitaries from the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, visiting the country to hammer out diplomatic agreements or advance trade ties. While they always emphasize their respective countries’ respect for religious tolerance, they usually steer away from discussing in public their personal feelings about being in the Holy Land.

Not so Zayed R. Alzayani, Bahrain’s minister for industry, commerce and tourism, who spent three days in Israel this week — including a stroll through Jerusalem’s Old City, which he described as a spiritual highlight.

“I’ve always spoken to people who’ve been to Jerusalem. And they always told me: It’s probably the most spiritual city in the world. I felt it last night. I felt it,” he told The Times of Israel on Thursday during a briefing for Israeli journalists. “And the closer you get to the holy sites — I don’t know, maybe it was a weird feeling, maybe it’s just me — I felt there’s more spirit.”

And yes, folks, Rami was right about Hassan II being a jew-puppet. For example, one of the king's close advisers (read: handlers) was the very influential jew André Azoulay:

Trump hails Israel & Morocco establishing relations as ‘massive breakthrough’ – and recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over W. Sahara

Israel and Morocco have agreed to normalize their relations in a deal brokered by US President Donald Trump. The deal is the latest in a series of US-mediated agreements between Israel and the Muslim world.

White House officials told Reuters that Trump sealed the deal in a phone call on Thursday to Morocco’s King Mohammed VI. Trump then hailed the agreement on Twitter as a “massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East.”

Unlike some of the Arab states, the North African nation, considered to be part of the Greater Middle East, was not technically at war with Israel. However, it has not openly acknowledged the existence of the Jewish state until now. Despite its public position of non-acknowledgement, Morocco secretly communicated with Israeli intelligence at several decisive moments during Israel’s conflicts with its Arab neighbors.

Under the new agreement, Morocco and Israel will establish full diplomatic relations and airline connections with each other, and “promote economic cooperation,” White House adviser Jared Kushner told Reuters.

In signing the US-brokered deal, Morocco follows in the footsteps of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan in establishing relations with Israel.

Prior to the deal, some Moroccan commentators wrote off rumors of an agreement as far-fetched, in light of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, and what one Moroccan journalist called his country’s “dedication to the Palestinian cause.” Morocco also saw mass protests against Trump’s Middle East peace plan in February 2020, which they view as tilted against Palestine.

Trump’s pursuit of Mideast ‘peace legacy’ is driven by bribery and is fueling conflict

Morocco becomes the latest Arab nation to declare “historic normalization” of ties with Israel in deference to President Trump’s supposed “visionary” peace plan for the Middle East.

In a few weeks, Donald J. Trump is likely to be finally turfed out of the White House as his tenuous legal challenges to the presidential election fizzle and flounder. With an eye on leaving some kind of “legacy,” Trump wants to go down in history as the great peace deal-maker in the Middle East.

The last few months have seen frenetic efforts to get Arab nations to normalize ties with Israel. Morocco this week became the fourth nation to do so, following in the steps of the United Arab Emirates, Sudan and Bahrain. (Egypt and Jordan had already done so back in 1979 and 1994.) However, most of the 22-nation Arab League still refuses to open relations with Israel owing to long-standing support for Palestinian national rights.

Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, the supposed brainchild behind the president’s Abraham Accords peace plan, declared that the recognition of Israel by Morocco was another landmark move towards settling the decades-old Arab-Israeli conflict over Palestine.

Trouble is Trump’s peace vision comes with a lot of arm-twisting, bribery, and sowing of wider tensions in the region.

Morocco has recognized Israel at a price. The Trump administration induced the move by granting its recognition of Morocco’s territorial claims over the Western Sahara. The area is contested by a separatist group, the Polisario Front, which declares it as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Only a month ago, the group announced the end of a 29-year ceasefire with Morocco. The ostensible peace overture solicited by the Trump administration is thus inciting a war in the Maghreb region which could draw in surrounding countries Mauritania and Algeria, both of which are allied with the Western Sahara’s Polisario Front.

Trump’s “art of the deal” is less about upholding principles of international law and national rights and more about grubby expedience to get to his bottom line. Just as in his former life as a New York City real-estate magnate, it’s all about greasing palms and bending rules to come out on top.

This president has fawned over Israel, snubbing international consensus when he declared Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state in complete disdain for Palestinian historic rights. In repudiation of international law, Trump’s administration has recognized Israeli occupied territories as legally held. It has also declared the Golan Heights annexed by Israel from Syria to be under Israeli sovereignty.

Trump is redrawing maps like a colonial master and without a murmur of protest among other Western states. Contrast the hullabaloo the West has engaged in over Crimea joining the Russian Federation after a legally held referendum in 2014. Sanctions and recriminations have been relentless with cries of Russian “annexation,” yet Trump’s tearing up of maps and legal rights is somehow acceptable… because it’s in the name of “peace.”

Trump rescinds Sudan’s terrorist status as it closes in on ties with Israel

DECEMBER 14, 2020 2:39 PM

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Trump administration rescinded Sudan’s status as a state sponsor of terrorism, part of the effort to establish ties between Israel and the Arab country.

“This represents a fundamental change in our bilateral relationship toward greater collaboration and support for Sudan’s historic democratic transition,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday in a statement. “This achievement was made possible by the efforts of Sudan’s civilian-led transitional government to chart a bold new course away from the legacy of the Bashir regime and, in particular, to meet the statutory and policy criteria for rescission.”

Over 50,000 Israelis have already visited the UAE since peace deal signing

DECEMBER 17, 2020 12:02 PM

(JTA) — Over 50,000 Israelis have visited the United Arab Emirates since the recent normalization pact between Israel and the UAE, according to a report this week in The Washington Post.

That number is the result of only two weeks of open commercial flights between the countries, which agreed to open the diplomatic and tourism floodgates in a historic agreement signed in August. Tens of thousands more were expected to visit during the Hanukkah holiday, according to the Post.

The report also said that the Jewish community center in Dubai, the UAE capital, is increasing its staff from five to “about 30” employees, and that nearly 150 restaurants have begun serving kosher food. The center is planning to build a mikvah “befitting Dubai’s luxury standards.”

Israeli chief rabbi gives his blessing to institutions in UAE, marking new era of religious Jewish life in Dubai and beyond

BY ASMA ALI ZAIN DECEMBER 21, 2020 2:32 PM

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (JTA) — As part of a historic trip through the United Arab Emirates, the chief Sephardic rabbi of Israel gave his Orthodox certification to the Jewish community center here, a fledgling synagogue in Abu Dhabi and other Jewish institutions, helping to mark a new era of religious Jewish life in the country that recently struck a normalization agreement with Israel.

In a symbolic gesture, Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef helped the Dubai center start writing a Torah scroll on Saturday night following the Sabbath and invested Rabbi Levi Duchman as the community’s leader.

“The survival of a Jewish community depends on its adherence to Torah values and Torah learning,” Yosef told the approximately 80 community members in attendance.

Referring to Duchman, he said, “The Jewish community in the Emirates is fortunate to have a rabbi that not only teaches Torah, but is working to grow the community and its institutions.”

The ceremony included special prayers in Hebrew, English and Arabic, while Yosef also expressed his appreciation for the UAE government. The Emirates, a collection of seven oil-rich cities in the Persian Gulf, had not diplomatically recognized Israel as a state before August, when the two nations signed an accord opening up formal relations, trade and tourism. Since then, over 50,000 Israelis have traveled to the country.

Trump administration prods Indonesia to recognize Israel with promise of perhaps $2 billion more in aid

DECEMBER 22, 2020 3:47 PM

(JTA) — A top Trump administration official wants to leverage development aid to have Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, recognize Israel.

Adam Boehler, the CEO of the U.S. International Development Finance Corp., told Bloomberg that Indonesia could get $1 billion to $2 billion more in development aid if it joins the rush being organized by the Trump administration in its final days to have Arab and Muslim countries openly recognize Israel.

“We’re talking to them about it,” Boehler said. “If they’re ready, they’re ready, and if they are then we’ll be happy to even support more financially than what we do.”

In a bid led by senior White House adviser Jared Kushner — President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and a longtime friend of Boehler — the administration is pushing normalization agreements between Israel and Arab and Muslim states as the president nears the end of his term. Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have signed agreements, and Morocco and Sudan are said to be close to deals.
