Default Progress Party vows comeback

Disappointed members of Norway’s most conservative political party, the Progress Party, retreated into meetings on Tuesday to hash out just what went wrong in local elections that saw their support cut in half in many Norwegian cities. Analysts were offering lots of reasons for the party’s abrupt fall.

Quote:
The party faithful didn’t seem inclined to simply lick their wounds, however, and party leader Siv Jensen was already warning her rivals to “watch out!” She vowed the party will rebuild and make a comeback in time for national elections in 2013.

Jensen mostly blamed the poor election results on “an extremely demanding year,” which began with a nursing home scandal in Oslo, where elder care was under the control of the Progress Party (Fremskrittspartiet, Frp). Elder care is also one of the party’s biggest causes, so allegations that the city had lost control over nursing home staffing were embarrassing.

Then came a sex scandal involving the party’s candidate for mayor in Stavanger, who also was one of Jensen’s most trusted advisers. It wasn’t the first time allegations of sexual misconduct were lodged against a top party official, and the case quickly threatened the party and then led to harsh criticism because of the way party leaders were handling it.

Two more cases of sexual harassment followed and soon the party was starting to tumble in public opinion polls. After enjoying voter support that at one point ranked the party as the largest in the land just a few years ago, the party fell seven points in April alone.

A fall of her own

In June, Jensen herself fell, on her boat, and landed in the hospital with a broken back just before the election campaign season was due to begin. She maintained a tough profile, even while lying in her hospital bed, but was forced off work for a few weeks and opinion polls continued to fall.

And then in July came the tragedy that many feel has changed Norway forever: Anders Behring Breivik, an avowed Christian right-wing extremist, confessed to bombing Norway’s government headquarters and gunning down scores of Labour Party summer campers on the island of Utøya. Breivik had once been a member of the Progress Party and its youth organization and claimed to be launching a war against Islam.

Jensen was as shocked as all other party leaders in Norway, and quickly denounced Breivik’s acts, but her party has long been critical of the immigration that Breivik wanted to halt and her predecessor Carl I Hagen said he still believes most terrorists are Muslims. The party found itself a victim of its own earlier rhetoric and in the awkward position of having to defend its tough position on thorny issues like immigration and integration while claiming it was horrified by Breivik’s anti-Islam positions.

When Hagen said he also thought the police were using too many resources on their investigation into Breivik’s attacks, criticism rose and he ultimately dropped out of the mayor’s race in Oslo. By that time, the party’s standing in the polls was looking very poor indeed as it headed into elections for city and county government all over Norway. It ended up being trounced by the Conservative Party (Høyre), with support on a nationwide basis falling to as low as 11.5 percent, compared with numbers as high as 28 percent a few years ago.

Not a quitter

Jensen has no intention of resigning, though, and seems to maintain support from her colleagues. “This isn’t Siv’s fault,” Jøran Kallmyr, who may lose his spot in Oslo’s city government, told newspaper Dagsavisen on Tuesday. “It has been a very special election campaign and the others have been really good, especially Høyre.” Ove Vanebo, head of the party’s youth organization FpU, agreed: “I’m sure Siv is the right leader to turn things around.”

While admitting that she was “deeply dissatisfied” with the election results, Jensen went on the offensive quickly. “We are in fact the third-largest party, so we’re on the platform,” she told party members Monday night. “And next time we’ll go for gold!”

Others think Jensen will make some major changes and “clean up” the party’s reputation. She repeatedly called party supporters “Norway’s toughest voters” and pointed to some towns where the party did well. She may be down, but she’s not out, noted several election analysts. As Professor Anders Todal Jensen told newspaper Aftenposten, “For anyone who wants a future within the party, challenging Siv Jensen is a high-risk sport.”

Default Norway’s multiculturalism posterboy dies fighting for Al-Qaeda linked group

The man pictured at the right was born in Somalia. His parents brought him to Norway when he was ten. After joining the Norwegian army he was praised as a model immigrant and model soldier. He was given a high security clearance and selected to be Norway’s posterboy for mulch-culturalism and diversity. He served as “His Majesty the King’s Guard” in 2005 and 2006.

In 2009 he flew to Ethiopia to visit relatives. It was the first time he set foot in Africa since 1994. He decided to use his army training to serve radical Islam. He joined the Al-Quaeda linked Al-Sahaab.

Norwegian authorities have confirmed that the missing soldier died earlier this year in an attack on non-Muslims in Somalia.

Norwegian Black Metal Band Causes Stir With Anti-Islamic Lyrics

Jan. 12, 2012

According to the Arab television network Al Arabiya, Norwegian black metallers TAAKE have sparked outrage after being nominated for a prestigious Norwegian music award despite having written lyrics that are allegedly anti-Islamic.

TAAKE's "Noregs Vaapen" album, along with the latest releases from INSENSE, SHINING, VREID and ÅRABROT, has been nominated in the "Metal" category at the 40th annual Spellemann awards (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy Awards). The largest and oldest Norwegian music awards show will be held Saturday, January 14 at Folketeateret in Oslo, Norway and will be broadcast live on the Norwegian channel NRK1.

TAAKE's critics argue that the lyrics in the band's song "Orkan" (Hurricane) are xenophobic as they include the phrase "To hell with Muhammad and the Mohammedans" and their "unforgivable customs."

However, Hoest, TAAKE's front man, has refuted these claims and said that their sole intention was to criticize religion. "Our view, in the name of freedom of expression, is that it is shameful to adhere to Christianity or Islam," he said.

Marte Thorsby, chairman of the prize committee's board, denied any allegations that the judges had not properly listened to the album before its nomination. "We enjoy full freedom of expression in Norway and a Spellemann jury is not going to censor content in any way," she told the Aftenposten newspaper.

Hoest previously found himself at the center of controversy in March 2007 after he appeared on stage in Essen, Germany with a swastika symbol drawn on his chest. This led to the cancellation of the band’s European tour and outrage among many heavy metal fans across Germany.

Hoest responded to the controversy by saying, "We truly apologize to all of our collaborators who might get [into] problems because of the Essen swastika scandal, except for the Untermensch (subhuman) owner of that club; you can go suck a Muslim."

TAAKE's most recent statement takes a slightly less offensive tone: "TAAKE has never been a political band, and we do not encourage either violence or racism."

I made a visit to a 'Sons of Norway' meeting at their local lodge, and was the top person there was going in a harsh and loud voice about how bad the Nazi's were and how much he hated them. He was pushing a book about Nazi's in Norway during WWII that absolutely made them out to be the worst thing ever to come upon the earth.

Are all the Son's of Norway groups that way?

Default Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Scolds Norway For "Intolerance"

Quote

The UN ad hoc organization OSCE, charged with trying to head off and resolve conflicts in Europe, has criticized Norwegian officials for failing to address alleged intolerance towards Muslims and Jews in Norway.

The OSCE delegation called Norway “an exemplary state” when it comes to promoting human rights and equality, but pointed to what they see as worrying signs of anti-Semitism already,
http://www.newsinenglish.no/2012/05/...ity-in-norway/
along with discrimination of Muslims as well.

The three members of the delegation (a retired Irish judge, a rabbi who heads the American Jewish Committee and an ambassador from Kazakhstan) were particularly concerned about Norwegians’ opinions on the conflict in the Middle East, which Norwegians’ own politicians have actively tried to mediate for decades.

Default Norway extends mandatory military service to women

Quote:
Norway has voted to extend mandatory military conscription to all citizens, regardless of gender, the first peacetime European or NATO country to do so. Women will now likely face one year of military service as of 2015.

Norway's parliament overwhelmingly backed a resolution on Friday, which urges the government to push ahead with legislation on gender neutral conscription.

"Rights and duties should be the same for all," said Labour lawmaker Laila Gustavsen, a supporter of the bill. "The armed forces need access to the best resources, regardless of gender, and right now mostly men are recruited."

jewsign Holocaust Center wins more funding

Quote:
At a time when many museums in Norway are struggling with budget cuts, the Holocaust Center in Oslo has been granted NOK 20 million. The funding is four times greater than the amount the center itself originally requested.

Oslo’s Centre for Studies of Holocaust and Religious Minorities (Senter for studier av Holocaust og livssynsminoriteter, or HL–Senteret) has been allocated the funding, equivalent to around USD 3.3 million, in the revised state budget. It originally applied for the more modest sum of NOK 5 million (USD 860,000), to be awarded over four years, but has been awarded NOK 20 million as a lump sum, newspaper Aftenposten reported recently.

Thumbs up Total Nordisk Motstand!

Default Norway's Progress Party -"Utoya survivors fear right-wing surge "

(Breivik's former party)

Sunday, September 8

Quote:
As Norwegians head to the polls Monday for the first parliamentary election since the July 22, 2011, tragedy, the tables appear to have turned.

The Progress Party looks likely to come into power for the first time, as part of a center-right coalition that polls suggest could oust Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg's Labor-led government.

It's a development that disturbs many of the 33 shooting survivors who are bidding for national office.

"It scares me that the Progress Party could be in power," said 29-year-old Vegard Groeslie Wennesland, a survivor running on a Labor Party ticket. "Some of their prominent figures still use very strongly anti-immigrant rhetoric. And that sort of rhetoric will create a more hostile environment."

Norway's Somalis worry extremism is spreading

Published: October 24, 2013 Updated 52 minutes ago

ADDS SOURCE INFORMATION AND PROVIDES ALTERNATE CROP - In this June 2007 photo provided by a former classmate, Norwegian-Somali Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow sits on a rock during a school outing in Larvik, Norway. Dhuhulow has been identified as one of the gunmen who attacked an upscale mall in Kenya, officials said Friday

By KARL RITTER — Associated Press

OSLO, Norway — Somali immigrants in Norway fear that violent extremism is taking root in the community after reports of young Somali-Norwegians traveling abroad to join jihadist groups.

One of the gunmen in the Nairobi, Kenya, mall attack that killed 67 people last month has been identified as Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow, a 23-year-old Norwegian citizen who returned to his native Somalia in 2010.

Norway's Somali community was still coming to terms with that news when it was struck by another startling development: Two teenage sisters — 16 and 19 — had left their family in Norway to join the civil war in Syria.

"It is very shocking," said Mohamed Husein Gaas, a Somali-born East Africa expert at the Fafo research foundation in Oslo. "No one thought two young girls would travel to a place where they don't have any connection."

It's not clear how exactly the sisters from suburban Oslo, who have not been named, planned to participate in the Syrian war. But they told their family they wanted to take part in jihad, said Bashe Musse, a Somali community leader and local politician in Oslo.

Norwegian newspaper VG said they flew to Turkey and made their way to the Syrian border, without telling their family until they had left Norway.

Musse said he has been in contact with their father, who traveled to Turkey in hopes of finding the sisters near the border where the Norwegian police say they were last spotted.

He reached one of his daughters by phone, but she told him it was too late to stop them from joining the "jihadists," Musse said.

"I don't have words to express how difficult this was for the (Somali) community," Musse said. "In so short time, two cases. ... It's kind of a wakeup call."

He added that the vast majority of Somalis in Norway don't support violent extremism. About 30,000 people in Norway were either born in Somalia or have Somali parents. The wealthy Nordic country is one of the most popular destinations for Somali immigrants in Europe along with Britain, Sweden and the Netherlands.

The Syria conflict has attracted hundreds of foreign fighters from European countries, many of whom have joined Islamic militant groups. An estimated 30 to 40 people — and possibly more — have left from Norway alone, according to the domestic intelligence service PST. Security officials are concerned that they could pose terror threats once they return home combat-hardened and traumatized by war.

"Once they return they may be capable of carrying out a violent act in Norway," PST chief Marie Benedicte Bjoernland told The Associated Press in an interview late Wednesday.

Like in other countries, jihadist groups are targeting young Muslims, and in some cases Norwegian converts, through a mix of online propaganda and personal contact. Why Norwegian youth would give up a secure and comfortable life in one of the world's richest countries is something Bjoernland struggles to explain.

"We don't have a clear answer. It is a mental journey," she said.

For Dhuhulow, whose family moved to Norway in 1999, that journey started in the years before he returned to Somalia in 2010.

Norwegian authorities have declined to confirm his identity because the investigation is ongoing, but Bjoernland told the AP on Wednesday that the Norwegian suspect was well known to her agency in 2010 and that it even tried to steer him away from a path toward terrorism.

"We had several talks with him ... before he left Norway more than three years ago," Bjoernland said. "Obviously we didn't succeed, but there was quite an effort put into the preventive side of this."

She declined to give details of the conversations, and said the Norwegian "most likely" died in the attack, though PST investigators haven't confirmed that. The Kenyan government said Sunday it believes it has recovered the remains of the four gunmen seen in CCTV footage carrying out the attack.

Security camera images showed what appeared to be Dhuhulow and three other gunmen firing coldly on shoppers as they made their way along store aisles after storming the upscale mall last month.

The Somali Islamic extremist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility, saying the attack was retribution for Kenya's military involvement in Somalia.

Norway just recently made it illegal to receive training from terror groups. But even with that law it is difficult for authorities to prove that a suspected wannabe militant is traveling abroad to train with or join jihadist groups.

"When they are radicalized and when they are determined to go, for instance to Syria or other conflict areas, we don't have many legal measures to stop them," Bjoernland said.

"We do preventive work. We talk to them. We try to persuade them not to go, because it's a dangerous journey," she said. "I wish we were more successful. We have succeeded in turning some around from traveling. But quite a few have actually left."

Associated Press writers Mark Lewis in Stavanger, Norway, and Jan M. Olsen in Copenhagen, Denmark, contributed to this report.

Count on it. But the jewspapers , who portray Somali niggers as Syrian rebels ,tell us that they're "refugees fleeing the evil Assad regime" so cut ' em a break.

And a Kenyan mall-shooter was living in Norway; we'll see how far this news makes it in the kwa judenpresse.

‘Norway unwilling to confront war crimes’

Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff says Oslo won't admit to part in war crimes done in Ukraine during World War II.

The government of Norway is unwilling to “confront the issue” of crimes allegedly committed by some of its citizens during World War II, said Efraim Zuroff, a Nazi hunter and the director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Jerusalem office.

Zuroff spoke with The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday after the cancellation of a planned trip to the Scandinavian nation in which he had hoped to speak with Justice and Public Security Minister Anders Anundsen.

In October, Olav Tuff, 91, a former Norwegian volunteer in the SS Viking Division, told the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) in an interview that he had participated in war crimes in the Ukraine.

Tuff said he and other soldiers of the division, which was composed of conscripts from occupied nations, concentrated hundreds of people inside a church and burned them alive.

“I stood and watched, and there was no one coming out. There was a lot of yelling and screaming, and we could hardly believe what we were a part of. But there was little we could do. We had to do what we were ordered,” Tuff told NRK, according to a transcript published on thelocal.no.

Zuroff said Tuff’s admissions should not have come as a surprise.

“It was very clear that the Viking Division had committed war crimes but until about six weeks ago, none of the Norwegians who served in the unit ever admitted that Norwegians also participated in these war crimes in the Ukraine,” Zuroff said. “This was the first time that anyone spoke openly about the participation in the crimes.”

The Nazi hunter explained that he canceled his trip, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, after being told he would not be able to meet with Anundsen. Zuroff had previously been informed through journalist Eirik Veum, who recently published a book documenting Norwegian participation in the deportation of local Jews to Auschwitz, that government officials were willing to meet with him.

However, he told the Post, “it wasn’t clear who was going to be at the meeting, whether the minister was going to show up, and there was no official confirmation of the meeting, so I decided to postpone my trip.”

Representatives of Anundsen apologized to Zuroff on Tuesday and hinted that the minister would be willing to meet in several months when Zuroff is scheduled to return after researching the role of Norwegians in the Holocaust.

“Our suspicion is that the Norwegians were involved not only in a solitary crime that Olav Tuff admitted and described,” he said. “So the plan is to do the research now for three to four months... and see if we can track down additional witnesses and present a much stronger case to the justice minister to change the law to allow prosecution.”

In response to an inquiry from the Post, Andreas Skjøld- Lorange, a spokesman for the Norwegian Justice Ministry said “Dr. Zuroff was not denied a meeting with the justice minister” and “we have never in any way indicated we would not meet with him.”

“On the contrary,” he said, “the Justice and Public Security Ministry had prepared for a meeting with Dr Zuroff... Unfortunately, due to an misunderstanding within the ministry, this was never conveyed to Dr. Zuroff.

“State Secretary Vidar Brein-Karlsen stated yesterday to Norwegian media that he would meet with The Simon Wiesenthal Center and listen to what Dr. Zuroff has to say.”

Default Jam-packed jails force Norway to free criminals

Police in northern Norway are being forced to release criminals back onto the streets because of a shortage of prison spaces, the acting head of police in the city of Tromsø warned this week.

Einar Sparboe Lysnes cautioned in a statement on Thursday that in the last few months the situation had reached a crisis point.

"We have several times discovered that there were no free spaces, and so simply had to let them back out," he told VG newspaper. "As a result new criminal offences take place that otherwise would not have happened. Our ability to prevent crime and ensure safety is reduced."

Lysnes' warning followed a complaint earlier this month from the head of the police in Vestfold county, near Oslo, who proposed freeing up space by converting old army camps in far-northern Norway into emergency prisons for foreign criminals.

Lysnes said that on Thursday, the day he made the problem public, he had been forced to release a 20-year-old repeat offender, who had been charged this time with three serious thefts, six burglaries and fraud.

Earlier in the autumn, he was forced to release a car thief who only a few weeks later went on to carry out further car thefts, until he was finally stopped for driving a vehicle when drunk.

Jorid Midtlyng, who heads the prison services in Norway's northern region, admitted that prisons in the region were at full capacity.

"We apologize for the situation, but we are jam-packed," he said. "We do everything we can… yet it does occasionally happen that we can't offer places."
