He insists that his move from Arsenal to Barcelona was entirely for footballing reasons.

But now Thierry Henry released a statement confirming that his marriage to English model Nicole Merry was over.

The French star, who has a two-year-old daughter with Miss Merry, had earlier told friends: "I had to get away from everything English, including my wife unfortunately.

Henry, an Arsenal favourite for eight years, was transferred to Spain this summer in a £16million deal.

At a high-profile showbusiness wedding in Paris last weekend, he told friends: "I didn't really want to leave Arsenal - they're my favourite club and I loved playing for them - but lots of things have changed recently."

The footballer, who was born in a tough Paris suburb, acted like a single man when he attending the marriage of old friend Tony Parker, the basketball star, and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria.

He stayed alone in a suite in the French capital's plush Hyatt-Vendome Hotel for five days, and was spotted out partying and visiting casinos every night.

A friend said: "If anything Thierry agreed to go to Spain because he saw the move as a way of getting away from troubles in his personal life. Nicole's family are all in England, and he just wanted to get away from the place."
