making and using compost
ornamental plants you can place around your garden to support creatures that eat pests.

There are some great books out there that deal with soil and how to get the best soil for different kinds of plants. (soil good for melons might not be good for peppers)

Hit your library and raid the non-fiction section.

You forgot if a person has a very large garden it is good to plant a cover crop. This protects the soil and goes back into the soil for fertilizer.

very true... it was not a complete list just the first few that came to mind
