When I was in high school during summer vacation I worked for a local building contractor as a laborer, cleanup guy, gopher, etc. My boss was doing a room addition and some remodeling on John Waynes house which was located right on Balboa Bay in Newport Beach, Ca. Really really nice place.

Before I started the job my boss told me that if I did happen to see Wayne on the job not to ask him for any autographs or pics cuz he didn't like it. Which I thought was laughable because even as a kid I considered asking someone for their signature to be demeaning if not outright gay.

So anyway, I'm on Waynes back porch shoveling some busted up concrete into a wheel barrow as I recall and out walks the Duke himself. But he's in his bath robe, sans toupee, with a drink in one hand and a cig in the other...and it's about 9 or 10 in the morning.

You know how John Wayne acts in the movies, real tough and always giving orders? That's exactly how he is in real life. He walks up to me, and keep in mind I'm a 16 or 17 year old kid at this time, and says something to the effect: " Hey pal, I noticed that some nails haven't been pounded all the way in on the framing walls you guys are putting up, I want that fixed". I replied as politely as possible that once the wall board was up you wouldn't be able to see the nails. So he starts yelling at me.

"As much as I'm paying you people you're going to do the god damn job right!" So I'm standing there with mouth agape thinking to myself what the newspaper headlines will read after I clock this guy. News flash: Dumb ass teen breaks American icon's jaw. Gets 20 year sentence.

Wisely suppressing those urges I replied to the Duke. "Yessiree Mr. Wayne, I'll get right on it".

I saw him a few times after that in the ensuing weeks but I always went out of my way to try and avoid him, he was that much of a dickhead. Constantly chain smoking(He'd have one in his mouth and two burning in the ashtray), barking orders and generally being a pain in the ass.

Don't miss him one bit.

I can't remember which one...either Ann Bancroft (later the wife of Mel Brooks), or Ann Baxter (more likely as she was a coke-party girl type) but one of them said she did it with Wayne, and at another time with Lee Marvin...and the two of them had the smallest dicks she ever saw. Can't have everything, I guess.
