1942: "The Never Again Club" & Sterilization of all German males

IN LONDON AN ASSOCIATION has been founded which has adopted a motto the suficiently clearly expresses its mission. In the present was: Never again! And although this slogan is common to all the Allies, great and small, although it unifies and expresses to a remarkable extent the thoughts and wishes for the future of Polish exile as well as the American Congressman, nevertheless the London Never Again Club may meet much criticism and many attacks.

For if to-day two people are talking about Germany and come to agreement on the fact that Germany must never again be allowed to embark on a new, bloodthirsty expedition in pursuit of the phantom of world dominion, this does not mean that their thoughts are identical. The words "never again" have a very different content and varying sound according to whether they are uttered by a Czech refugee whose face and back still bear the scars left by a Gestapo beating, or by an American who sees in descriptions of the horrors of the concentration camp only Gruelpropaganda of emigrants, which should not be believed.

Innocent Lambs Transformed into Wolves

All are in agreement as to the fact that the problem of Germany must be solved if the present horrors are in fact never again to be repeated. The profound difference, however, lies in the conceptions as to how and by what methods this problem is to be solved. The Never Again Club that we have mentioned above wished to spread propaganda for a solution of the German problem and a view of Germany which should follow the ideas of Lord Vansittart. ("The German nation needs the most drastic cure in history and ... if it is not applied the world will die of the German disease" ... "We are at war with the German nation because our real enemy is German militarism. And Militarism has a long and well-established hold over the German people, including the workers." This, however, is only one of the many variations in the abundant scale of opinions about Germany and the future post-war attitude to Germany. There are opinions even more drastic than those of Vansittart, which speak of the Germans only as Huns, who must be in part systematically slaughtered and in part systematically sterilised (I have seen an entirely serious letter sent by "sent by a group of Englishmen to the Allied Premiers recommending in nine points the sterilisation of all male Germans: Point 1, for instance, for instance, stated: "It is in line with German pre-war home policy and legislation"; point 4 declared: "It is quick business—only ten minutes per case," and finally point 7 stated: "It is inexpensive. We have with medical advice worked out a scheme, comprising operators and anesthetic for 40,000,000 German males—it means approximately £5,000,000.")
