Putin expatriates Crimea's former occupation prosecutor and anime star Poklonskaya

Russia on Wednesday appointed a staunch supporter of Moscow's annexation of Crimea as its ambassador to the Cape Verde Islands, a move observers say shows her fall from the Kremlin's favour.

According to a decree from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Natalia Poklonskaya, 41, will head Russia's Embassy in Cape Verde, a Portuguese-speaking archipelago off the western coast of Africa with a population of around 550,000 people.

Poklonskaya became the Moscow-backed top "prosecutor" for Crimea following Russia's illegal takeover of the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

She gained a huge internet following, especially in Japan, where she became a popular character in anime and manga art. Her first news conference, where she appeared in a prosecutor's uniform and tie, hit over 1 million views on the YouTube platform. Her Japanese fans say that they are more focused on her looks than politics.

And by the way, it's good to know that the second(?) richest man in the world is an anime fan. I would say that it's one of the few redeeming things about him.

TOKYO, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Leiji Matsumoto, the famed Japanese manga and anime creator of epic space sagas including "Galaxy Express 999" and "Space Pirate Captain Harlock", has died aged 85, his office said on Monday.

The cause of death was heart failure, local media said.

Matsumoto was also known for his work with Yoshinobu Nishizaki on the 1970s TV series "Space Battleship Yamato" - titled "Star Blazers" in the United States - with Matsumoto credited as its director as well as the creator of the manga series spun off from it.

His Captain Harlock has become something of a cult figure in Italy, especially among patriots/nationalists/neo-Fascists, which I've posted about in this thread.

BY ANDERS ANGLESEY ON 11/8/21 AT 9:31 AM EST

Paul Gosar (R-AZ) has shared a photoshopped anti-immigrant anime video that shows him killing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

On Sunday, Gosar shared the video on Twitter that used clips from popular Japanese anime Attack on Titan, alongside the caption: "Any anime fans out there?"

The clip opens with Gosar's name under Japanese text, which reads "attack of immigrants" before it continues to show real clips of Gosar and Border Patrol agents spliced alongside scenes from the anime show's opening credits.

Gosar—in the place of main character Eren Yaeger—circles around a giant with Ocasio-Cortez's face photoshopped on before the anime character launches into the air and comes down, slicing the back of the giant's neck, killing it.

Seconds later, Gosar runs across a rooftop and, with blades drawn, jumps toward a giant with President Joe Biden's face photoshopped onto it.

Rep. Paul Gosar ripped for tweeting ‘Russia is not our enemy’

By Victor Nava
February 20, 2023

Far-right Rep. Paul Gosar was slammed by Twitter users Monday for saying that “Ukraine is not our friend, and Russia is not our enemy” on the heels of President Biden’s first trip to the war-torn nation.

The Arizona Republican, frustrated with the US government’s steady support of Ukraine since Russia’s Feb. 24, 2022, invasion, also slammed Biden for visiting Kyiv on President’s Day.

“Joe Biden visiting Ukraine is a slap in the face to every American, especially the people of East Palestine, Ohio,” Gosar tweeted on Monday, referencing the Feb. 3 train derailment that dumped toxic chemicals near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border.

“Ukraine is not our friend, and Russia is not our enemy,” Gosar added.

It's interesting that Gosar, who posted that excellent anime video on his Twitter page, is one of the few prominent politicians who have spoken out against the jews' nefarious anti-Russian hate campaign. Coincidence? Maybe. But anime is known to inspire courage and righteousness in men.

Why Anime has such deep roots in the Arab world

Japanese animation, dubbed into Arabic, was often the only form of programming for children growing up in the Middle East in the 1970s and 1980s

(...) Love of anime is far from being a niche sub-culture in Saudi Arabia or the wider Middle East. A 2019 YouGov poll conducted across the MENA region showed Saudi Arabia had the largest anime audience in the region.

Manga Productions was set up in 2016 to train Saudi animators in producing home-grown animation. It has also previously produced a mini-series Kanz al-Hattab (or the Woodcutter's Treasure), which aired on Japanese TV in 2018.
(...)
The Middle East’s relationship with anime goes back decades. Children growing up in the region in the 1970s and 1980s enjoyed dozens of Japanese-produced cartoons dubbed in Arabic.

“Captain Majid (originally Captain Tabasua) and Adnan wa Lina (originally Future Boy Conan) were my favourite”, says Mohammed Ramadan, from his home in Amman, Jordan.

“We had Tom and Jerry and Mickey Mouse too, but we preferred to watch anime, because there was a strong lead character, a compelling storyline, and always a noble point to the episode.

“If we had the choice between Disney and Anime we would always choose the Japanese cartoons as there was always something to learn from the programme,” says the 42-year-old accountant.
(...)
“If an episode was aired and we were not at home, we’d call Jordan TV and ask them to put a re-run of the episode, and they would.”

- Mohammed Ramadan, Anime enthusiast

Bassam Aldhahir (right) shares the animes of his childhood, like Grendizer, with his own children (Credit: Bassam Aldhahir)

“Of course I realised the shows I watched weren’t Arabic productions, apart from Grendizer, I thought that was Arabic – I was quite surprised when I found out it wasn’t when I was older,” he says.

By far one of the most popular anime’s in the region, Grendizer is about a giant robot from another planet who saves the earth from enemy attack.

“Grendizer’s theme tune sounded like a national anthem, a military parade, it resonates coming from Iraq,” says Aldhahir.

Al-Ghazzi explains that the process of dubbing was key to anime’s popularity in the Arabic-speaking Middle East at the time. “… the cartoon’s jingles and lyrics were infused with nationalist messages and slogans.”

The opening lyrics to Sasuke - a story about a ninja boy who fights villains - were comparable to Arab nationalist slogans taught at school Al-Ghazzi says.

“'Rise up, put your hand in my hand, rise up to defend your tomorrow and mine; we shall defend our land; with our blood we shall defend it', are the words to the Sasuke theme tune. They mirror the dominant political rhetoric at the time".

‘Anime-loving fighters’ capture US-made Bradley vehicle

A Russian military squad has attracted national attention with a viral video of a frontline trophy

A Russian military unit has found itself in the media spotlight, after humorous videos of the soldiers capturing a US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicle from the Ukrainian army went viral. Their reported interest in anime has further stirred up public interest.

One of the clips showed servicemen from the Kerch unit posing in front of an apparently intact piece of US-made weaponry, sarcastically thanking Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for delivering “this nice vehicle” to them. Another clip showed one of them making a face to the camera, with the trophy in the background, and saying: “There you go – glory to Russia!”
(...)
Public images shared on the messenger app Telegram by one of the squad members shows his keen interest in anime.

Another image shows the man behind the channel, who goes by call sign Lesiy, with a patch on his ballistic vest depicting an armed anime girl in a Russian ‘ushanka’ hat.

After the unit’s sudden rise to internet fame, Lesiy reacted with a joke post showing two anime girls standing next to an armored vehicle, captioned: “It seems like we’ve opened Pandora’s Box”.
(...)
The anime theme is part of a running joke for the soldiers. Leshiy, whose real name is Vladislav, described the unit’s frontline service as attending “an anime festival” in Donbass in one of his first posts last year.

But at least one member of the Kerch unit is a genuine enthusiast. A 19-year-old serviceman going by the nickname Shmyga was mentioned last year by the leader of a Russian anime fan group, involved in supporting the Russian troops.

More and more people are starting to realize that anime is the way to go.
