By Luiza Ilie and John Irish

BUCHAREST/PARIS, Jan 27 (Reuters) - France is looking to press ahead with lucrative military contracts in Romania after sending battle group tanks and an air defence system to the country as part of efforts to bolster NATO's ranks on the eastern flank, diplomatic sources said.

Paris leads a NATO battle group in Romania of about 800 troops, including 500 French soldiers alongside others from the Netherlands and Belgium. Paris has also deployed a surface-to-air missile system.

Romania's Aurescu: Power of Russia Cannot Match NATO

February 19th, 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin could have a “temptation” to expand its military presence if its invasion of Ukraine succeeds, though any challenge to NATO is unlikely, Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu told Bloomberg's Maria Tadeo at the Munich Security Conference. Aurescu also said the coming weeks and months would be 'crucial' for Ukraine and the west must provide all necessary support. (Source: Bloomberg)

Romania becomes Ukraine’s largest fuel supplier

Meanwhile, Ukrainian grain exports to Romania are causing problems for local farmers

February 20, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: PROFIT.RO

Romania’s fuel exports to Ukraine increased 30-fold last year to almost 1 million tons (983,404 tons), while another 251,303 tons of fuel was transported through Romania to Ukraine, which is 96 times more than in 2021, business daily news outlet Profit.ro reports.
(...)
Meanwhile, according to the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture, the transit of Ukrainian grain has put pressure on transport logistics in Romania and increased transport prices, while imports that remain in Romania have posed competition problems for local farmers due to lower prices of Ukrainian grain.

“Ukrainian wheat and sunflower flows have created some distortions on the Romanian market, transport logistics have been affected and price indications for this have doubled or even tripled in recent months.

Ship with Military Equipment for Training NATO Forces in Bulgaria and Romania arrived from the US in Alexandroupolis

Politics » DEFENSE | March 6, 2023, Monday // 13:28

An American ship with military equipment intended for NATO forces stationed in Bulgaria and Romania has arrived at the port of Alexandroupolis, Greece, reported ANA-MPA, quoted by BTA. The cargo is intended for military training in the Black Sea in Southeast Europe.

The American ship "Liberty Pride" is 199.9 meters long, 32.26 meters wide and has a draft (depth of immersion in the water) of 8.5 m. The ship docked on Saturday morning and began unloading military equipment, which, through combined transport, will continue to Bulgaria and Romania. Two major military exercises of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), "Atlantic Resolve 23" and "Defender Europe 23", will be held in the two countries. The exercises are in the context of the military conflicts in Ukraine.

The ship arrived in the Greek city of Alexandroupolis from the port of Charleston, USA, and will sail in the middle of this week. The American ferry is among the first in a chain of convoys carrying supplies to Allied forces in southeastern Europe, a process expected to last until the end of August.

NATO, US forces join Romania-led Black Sea military drills

Romania’s navy is leading multinational military drills in the Black Sea region
Via AP news wire

Romania’s navy led multinational military drills in the Black Sea region Thursday that brought together U.S. and NATO troops as the 30-nation alliance looks to boost security on its southeastern flank amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The sea and air exercises are part of a series of drills known as Sea Shield 2023 that involve some 3,400 military personnel from 12 NATO member countries and some partner nations.

Romania’s navy said Thursday’s drills in the Mahmudia region of the Danube Delta, which flows into the Black Sea, would demonstrate how the combined forces would “neutralize an enemy air landing” in an area adjacent to such a waterway.

German arms giant Rheinmetall has established a repair hub in Romania where it will carry out the maintenance of Ukrainian combat vehicles and self-propelled weapons, a spokesman for the German firm said on Sunday.

“Rheinmetall is working intensively on the construction of a military maintenance and logistics center on the territory of NATO partner Romania,” the official said, adding that construction work had already begun in the Satu Mare region near the Ukrainian-Hungarian border.

It is understood the center could start its work as early as April.

It is expected to “play a central role in maintaining the deployability of Western weapons systems used in Ukraine, ensuring their logistical supply,” according to Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger, who stressed that one of the company’s “central ambitions is to provide the best possible support to the NATO forces and Ukraine in this critical situation.”

Romanian farmers to protest “unintentional dumping” of Ukrainian grain to neighbors

07 April 2023
Radu Dumitrescu

Farmers from across Romania are set to protest on Friday, dissatisfied with the European Commission’s solutions to the imbalances caused by the influx of grain from Ukraine.

Hundreds of vehicles and agricultural machinery will move in convoys in several areas of the country, effectively blocking the surroundings. Farmers are angry because of the elimination of customs duties for Ukrainian grain that happened last year. Logistical bottlenecks made it so large quantities of Ukrainian grains, which are cheaper than those produced in the EU, have ended up in central European states, hitting prices and sales of local farmers, according to Reuters.

Earlier this month, the prime ministers of Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia sent a letter to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen saying that tariffs may need to be reintroduced to protect farmers in the EU.

More than 1,100 Roman silver coins discovered in southwestern Romania

27 April 2023
Irina Marica

A licensed user of metal detectors found 1,168 Roman silver coins at the end of last week in Padea, in Dolj county, southwestern Romania. Once their evaluation is completed, they are to be handed over to the Oltenia Museum.

According to specialists quoted by Gazeta de Sud, the coins are believed to date from the second half of the 3rd century.

"It is an important treasure in terms of quantity. Most of the pieces are Roman and Antonine imperial denarius and appear to have been buried in the time of Philip the Arab around the year 245, but we won't know for sure until we have the pieces cleaned," Radu Dumitrescu, museographer at the Oltenia Museum, told Gazeta de Sud.

Austria maintains veto against Romania’s accession to Schengen, foreign minister says

28 April 2023
Radu Dumitrescu

Austrian foreign minister Alexander Schallenberg recently said during an interview that his country will maintain its veto against the extension of the EU’s border-free Schengen Area until a “sustained decline” in asylum seekers is observed.

Austria’s decision to stop the expansion of the Schengen Area left Bulgaria and Romania outside of the zone, maintaining border controls between the two countries and Schengen Area members. The Netherlands also vetoed Bulgaria but approved Romania’s bid for membership. At that time, critics from Romania argued that the governing center-right People’s Party of Austria was using the issue of migration to keep its far-right contender the Freedom Party at bay.

Aside from Ukrainians, asylum applications in Austria nearly tripled last year to about 110,000. It is the highest per-capita rate in the EU, despite the fact that Austria does not have external borders to non-EU countries. The EU took in about 1 million refugees last year, excluding Ukrainians, a nearly 50 percent increase.

Little support for ex-Soviet state to merge with EU neighbor

Moldova will seek EU membership as an independent country, President Maia Sandu has said

The idea of Moldova acceding to its EU neighbor, Romania, does not have enough popular support, President Maia Sandu said in an interview with Geopolitique news portal this week.

Some in the post-Soviet state even find the notion frightening, the president added. “There is support for reunification with Romania, but not enough,” she told the news portal. Moldovans are in favor of joining the EU, but as a separate nation, she said.

“There are also people who fear reunification, there is indeed a discussion that’s been there for a long time, but again, there is not enough support for this to happen,” the president stated. Instead, Sandu said, Moldova seeks to join the EU and begin negotiations regarding the move as soon as possible.

On June 7, officers of the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), in cooperation with German and Serbian police, raided 11 locations and dismantled an international people smuggling ring moving illegal migrants from the Middle East to Germany.

DIICOT said in a press release that “between 2022 and 2023, several persons of Romanian and Turkish nationality, coordinated from outside the country by Turkish and Syrian nationals, set up a cross-border organized criminal group with the aim of committing the crime of smuggling migrants (of Turkish and Iraqi origin) on the route Turkey — Bulgaria/Serbia — Romania — Germany.”

According to DIICOT, the leaders of the group coordinated operations from their residences in Turkey, Germany and Serbia.

Romanian PM Nicolae Ciucă announces resignation ahead of planned Govt. reshuffle

12 June 2023
Radu Dumitrescu

Romania's prime minister Nicolae Ciucă announced his resignation from office in a press statement on Monday, June 12. His resignation is the first step towards the Government reshuffle which will see coalition partners, the Social Democrats (PSD), take over the position of prime minister. PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu is expected to be designated as the prime minister.

The so-called Government rotation will see the Liberals (PNL) exchange the position of PM with the Social Democrats, amid a larger government reshuffle. In his resignation statement, Ciucă noted that the rotation should have taken place on May 25, but that the teachers' strike delayed it.

"Through good collaboration, we managed to agree on a form of legislation so that the demands of teachers could be met and restore confidence in the teachers, educators, and instructors in the Romanian education system. We need measures that are sustainable and not populist. Therefore, considering that this conflict has been resolved and as we have assumed and I have assumed, today is the moment when I conclude my term as the prime minister of Romania," Ciucă said, cited by G4Media.

Austria still opposes Schengen expansion to Romania, Bulgaria

23 August 2023
Radu Dumitrescu

Austria’s interior minister Gerhard Karner recently stated that the government he is part of still believes that the Schengen area is “not functioning,” which is why they do not agree to expand it with the addition of Romania and Bulgaria.

During a meeting with the Romanian interior minister Cătălin Predoiu in Vienna, Karner asserted that Austria's position is that the Schengen area "as a whole is not functioning,” which is why they oppose its expansion.

"There are border controls between member states. In Germany, discussions have taken place about border control with Poland. This is a signal that the system is not working, which is why I believe that an expansion is not right at this moment,” Karner said, cited by Euronews Romania.

Update: NATO “closely” monitoring situation after parts of possible Russian drone found in Romania

07 September 2023
Irina Marica

Update: NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told EU lawmakers on Thursday that the Alliance does not have any indication that drone debris found in Romania was caused by an intentional attack launched by Russia, Reuters reported. He also said that NATO is awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Initial story: NATO said it is monitoring the situation in Romania "closely" after parts of what could be a Russian drone were found in Tulcea county, just across the border from Ukraine. The Romanian authorities announced the discovery on September 6 but are yet to confirm their exact origin.

"The Romanian authorities have confirmed that debris, possibly from a drone, has been found on Romanian soil, close to the border with Ukraine. The Romanian authorities are investigating the incident. Romania informed NATO allies about this incident in today's meeting of the North Atlantic Council, and allies expressed strong solidarity with Romania," NATO spokesperson Dylan White said in a statement quoted by Digi24.

The deputy secretary general of NATO, Mircea Geoană, said there are no indications of an intention of the Russian Federation to attack a member state of the alliance but that the concern of Romanian citizens who live near the Danube border with Ukraine is understandable.

"There are no indications that the Russian Federation has any intention to attack an allied state, that it is Romania, that it is anyone else. And this is given by the power and strength of our alliance," said Geoană, according to Bursa.ro.

Romania to host some of the migrants who arrived in Lampedusa, minister says

29 September 2023
Radu Dumitrescu

Romanian interior minister Cătălin Predoiu recently announced that Romania would assist Italy after the island of Lampedusa was overwhelmed by migrants.

"With regard to the external dimension of migration, the minister of Internal Affairs emphasized the urgent need for measures to regulate migration in all its aspects. He expressed concern about the numerous landings faced by the Italian authorities on the island of Lampedusa in recent times, stating that Romania will support Italy by taking in individuals in need of protection based on existing commitments," the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a press release cited by Libertatea. Predoiu also highlighted the assistance that Romania gives to Ukrainian refugees of war.

Interior ministers from the European Union met on Thursday, September 28, at the JAI Council in Brussels to discuss various issues, including migrants arriving by sea. The Italian island of Lampedusa is currently overwhelmed by a new wave of migrants. Recent data indicated that the number had reached 7,000 migrants.
