Default Indonesia . . one of the weirdest places in the world

- - - - -

. . . Indonesia is one of the weirdest places in the world.

- - - - -

Let's see . . . North-America is largely Anglo , Meso- / South-America largely Latino-Mestizo , Europe still largely european , North-Africa / the Middle East Arab , Sub-Saharan-Africa negroid , Asia asiatic , India Indo-Iranian, Australia also Anglo.

Indonesia / Oceania is "in between" . . . between Asia and the south-of-equator-sphere.

Like I said , one of the weirdest places . . racially . . and even religiously . .

- - -

The population of Oceania/ Indonesia ( the islands located between continental Asia and Australia) is very diverse.

Asiatics , Melanesians ( Papua etc ) , Indo-peoples , Pacific Islanders et al . . .

. . already , a 'melting-pot'.

Most strange detail on top of that: Through missonaries Islam is a very wide-spread religion there.

So . . what we have here . . a melting-pot of many ethnicities ( Indos, Asians ,Melanesians , Pacific Islanders . . ) , even with a most unusual religion for them ( Islam ) ( apart from Islam , surely there are primitive nature-religions still present there ; yet through missonaries Islam came to Indonesia . . .)

Weird . . one of the 'meeting-places' of the world.

So many different ethnicities , all drawn together in a state encompassing the islands . . .

Another interesting fact about that area : The Mariana Trench is located in that area . . it is the deepest point of the sea on Earth . .

- - - - -

I'm mainly posting this to point out Indonesia as one of the most diverse places in the world . .

How bizarre . . indeed . . . .

Well , it certainly wouldn't be Kuwait.

All of Kuwait has a population of around 4 million . .

A tiny state on the Arabian peninsula.

On the other hand , they're rich . .

They did it 'right' . . .

Many Islamic states used to be regarded as 'sand-deserts at the end of the world' by the outside world for long . . then , after the natural resource of oil came into fashion , many Islamic states played on that . . Some of them even turned atheistic , in a way , instead worshipping money . .

Today many 'rich' Islamic oil-states make deals with Wall Street brokers . .

. . and worship the 'almighty dollar'.

But . . I suppose without that they might still be regarded as 'sand-deserts at the and of the world' . . .

I'm especially fascinated by Indonesia's linguistic diversity:

Quote:
More than 700 living languages are spoken in Indonesia.[1] A major part of them belong to the Austronesian language family, while over 270 Papuan (non-Austronesian) languages are spoken in eastern Indonesia.[1] The official language is Indonesian[1] (locally known as bahasa Indonesia), a standardised form of Malay,[2] which serves as the lingua franca of the archipelago. The vocabulary of Indonesian borrows heavily from regional languages of Indonesia, such as Javanese, Sundanese and Minangkabau, as well as from Dutch, Sanskrit and Arabic.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Indonesia

However, the country that has the highest level of linguistic diversity in the world is Indonesia's neighbor Papua New Guinea:

Quote:
The country with the highest level of language diversity: Papua New Guinea

(...) what makes this country incredibly interesting, apart from its natural beauty, is the fact that a stunning 820 languages are spoken there. That is correct: 820. On average that means a language for every 8,563 Papua New Guineans – the record for the highest level of language diversity in the world.
There are several reasons for this incredible linguistic diversity: as it happens often in history, isolation plays a big part. Papua New Guinea sports a lot of natural divisions, and this has created natural barriers isolating communities from each other. The country is also part of the larger community of Polynesian cultures that spread very far and wide across the oceans, meaning that languages evolved in isolation after stemming from a unified source.

LANGUAGES OF THE WORLD

There are estimated to be over 7000 languages spoken in the world today. Our region is rich with diversity. Australia has hundreds of indigenous languages, Papua New Guinea, Australia’s northern neighbour, is home to over 850 languages and Vanuatu, another 105.

To get an idea of how many languages are spoken around the world, take a look at this map created by Worldmapper.

So what are we seeing? This map shows each country inflated (or deflated) to represent how many indigenous languages are spoken there.

In Africa we see two giants, Nigeria where over 520 languages are spoken, and Cameroon where about 280 languages are spoken. In our region, as mentioned, there is Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia which is also home to some 720 languages, and Taiwan has about 20 indigenous languages. India and Nepal, too have 460 and around 60 languages each. And over in the Americas, Mexico’s size reflects the 280 languages spoken there, and Guatemala, just below it has another 27 languages. Checkout our section on indigenous languages of Australia.

While at first glance this map resembles those weirdly proportioned maps with the size of the countries adjusted for population or wealth distribution, this one represents the world with the country size adjusted based on the number of indigenous languages that originated there. With approximately 3,000 native languages, Africa is the centerpiece of this map, and then there’s everyone else.

Pacific islanders surely are a wild bunch.

The 'headshrinkers'-cult also stems from there . .
