Default Viking warrior found in Sweden was a woman, researchers confirm

Viking warrior found in Sweden was a woman, researchers confirm

For more than a century, archaeologists and historians have assumed that the remains of a person found buried along with arms and horses in one of the most spectacular graves discovered in the Viking Age town of Birka, in Sweden, belonged to a man. Turns out they were wrong. Osteology- and DNA tests now show that that he has always been a she, and she was most likely a powerful military leader.

I am very skeptical about the conclusions reached by the experts.

There are no contemporary records or references of any "powerful woman warriors" among the Vikings or the other Germanic peoples. The most we have are a few vague, scattered mentions in post-Viking sagas about "shield maidens," who supposedly fought alongside male warriors. The second and third wives of Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha and Aslaug, are described as shield maidens in saga literature - but neither is an historically-attested figure, and they are most likely fictional characters. There are no historically attested woman Viking warriors.

"Ragnarok" is the name given to the climactic battle between the Gods and their enemies in Norse mythology. All of the Gods fight in Ragnarok: Odin, Thor, Frey, Heimdal, etc. - but none of the Goddesses take part in the battle.

Sometimes Odin's daughters, the Valkyries, are portrayed as woman warriors, but such a depiction of them is apparently the invention of Richard Wagner in the 1880s. In the Eddas and the sagas they are not portrayed as warriors. The Valkyries do not take part in Ragnarok, either.

There is no evidence of female participation in Germanic warriorhood during the heathen period.

Perhaps not a shield maiden, but a woman of some importance, like Queen Aslaug from Vikings. One of my favorite characters from the show, for obvious reasons.

The Viking culture was a practical one, If a royal was an effective leader, that was all that matters. Females in Viking culture had many privileges not afforded in most other European societies.

It is hard to argue with genetic testing regarding gender, It is more likely this woman was a Wife of a high Chieftain or possibly a Queen of a regional King, and died while he was still in power, and was buried with high honors because of her status.

The problem I got, is every little find like this is feminist-reassurance. And considering that the scientific community is on board with pushing that agenda as fact, we can't trust them as an objective source in every situation.

The only evidence I'm seeing for a fact is that she was a woman of high class in their society.

Women are physically inferior to men, especially when it comes to melee combat. They would have been ineffective in any real battle. Shield maidens would not hold a wall against male opponents. They'd get the shields ripped out of their hands, or simply shoved to the side; unimpeded by their cute little attempt at a shield wall. Imaginary, feminist, masturbatory, narratives.

Pretty much.

Viking (and earlier Germanic) battle combat was based on brute strength. Specific skill with weapons and fighting technique only came into play during duels between individual warriors (for example, the holmgang). Women have only one-third the upper body strength as men. It is hard to imagine any woman holding her own in an actual battle (HBO series Vikings notwithstanding).

But perhaps some anti-fascist women will prove me wrong during the upcoming clashes at street demonstrations over the next year or so...

The thing is, even in kwan sports-fag culture, women are placed separately from men. There isn't a single female in existence who could double as a defensive lineman for the New England Patriots. Or pitch at major league level. Or get out there on the ice in a hockey game with men and hold their own. Tears would be flowing the moment they get crashed into the wall. And everyone damn well knows it. Whether they admit it or not. Most women expect to be included, insist they can compete with men, yet still have this notion that we're supposed to handle them with kid gloves, or we're big meanies. None of them are serious. They're just attention whoring.

Varg Vikernes is a real-life Floki (Ragnar's boat-builder from Vikings).
