I always wondered how Turks ended up in Denmark when Denmark never had heavy industry, aside from a minor assembly plant producing Ford Cortinas dacades ago. The only persons who were officially obliged to residing in Denmark were members of that former Scandinavian treaty organization which guaranteed free movement of Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic citizens. European Union citizens could immigrate, only if they found employment or were independently wealthy. When I first arrived in Denmark, it was in 1986 and I saw plenty of them running markets and restaurants, aside from living in welfare-sponsored ghettos.

Police report that several of the burglars they have arrested at different locations around Denmark come from the same town in Romania and know each other, according to police inspector Karl Erik Agerbo.

“From our perspective, it all looks really well organised,” he told Jyllands-Posten.

Two men will stand trial today in Lyngby after being charged with more than 40 break-ins over the course of eleven days. They had planned to carry the stolen goods on a bus to Romania.

When the police tapped the Romanians and found out they were about to leave the country, they raided the bus and confiscated 14 suitcases packed with stolen laptops, iPads, iPods, cameras, perfume, silverware and jewellery.

"Romanians" mostly likely gypsies.

Denmark Considers New Anti-Jihadist Laws

After France proposed tough new anti-terrorism legislation, leading Danish MPs said that Denmark should weigh all of its options for stopping the flow of fighters to Syria.

Denmark will consider following France’s newly-proposed get-tough approach to keep aspiring jihadists from travelling to Syria.

France’s proposal includes a ban on foreign travel of up to six months for individuals suspected of being radicalised and allows authorities to confiscate their passports.

Denmark’s justice minister, Karen Hækkerup, was in Milan, Italy this week with eight of her European colleagues to discuss the growing problem of Europeans who travel to Syria to take part in that country’s civil war.

Following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, Denmark's Jewish community has reported an increase in anti-semitic rhetoric and even death threats.

Jews in Denmark have reported an increase in threatening messages since the recent escalation of violence in Gaza.

Following a TV appearance in which he debated the chairman of the Danish-Palestinian Friendship Association, the Danish Zionist Society’s (Dansk Zionistforbund) chairman Jonatan Møller Sousa has received a handful of death threats via Facebook.

“I hope you and your Zionist friends burn in hell and experience even more painful deaths than all the small children who have been killed in Gaza,” one Facebook message obtained by Kristeligt Dagblad read.

“Unfortunately there are no dead Jews: We’ll be sure to take care of that in Denmark,” read another.

Sousa is not alone. The Jewish Community in Denmark (Det Jødiske Samfund) reports that of the 18 anti-Semitic incidents reported within the community this year, 13 of them took place in July as the conflict between Israel and Hamas flared up.

The Jewish Community in Denmark reports that most of the incidents entailed threatening messages via email or Facebook but in one case it spilled over to the real world. A man wearing the Star of David around his neck was spit on and his assailant attempted to rip his necklace off.

“Some of these incidents could be written off as pranks, but when one has their life directly threatened on social media, we have moved beyond pranks,” The Jewish Community’s Dan Rosenberg Asmussen told Kristeligt Dagblad. “When you are spit upon on the bus and someone tries to take your necklace, we are talking about assault.”

The Danish-Palestinian Friendship Association disavowed the threats.

“I strongly oppose all types of anti-Semitic statements,” Fathi El-Abed told Kristeligt Dagblad. “But there is a group of people who can not figure out how to properly express themselves on the attacks taking place in Gaza. It’s too easy to go on Facebook and express yourself primitively.”

Asmussen said that it is vital that the violence in Gaza does not find its way to Denmark.

“The conflict between Israel and Hamas shouldn’t lead to those of us in Denmark having to accept anti-Semitic statements and attacks,” he said.

A rule of thumb says that only thefts with a value of more than 100,000 kroner get investigated by Copenhagen Police. In 2013, 95 percent of all reported thefts were merely noted down in a journal.

Thieves in Copenhagen can commit their crimes with impunity as long as they don’t steal big-ticket items.

An internal summary from Copenhagen Police obtained by BT revealed that police only investigate thefts when the value of the stolen goods exceeds 100,000 kroner ($18,165).

If the stolen items are below that amount, the police simply register the theft and do nothing more.

The internal document showed that just five percent of the 48,521 reports of theft, break-ins and vandalism in 2013 were investigated.

Claus Oxfeldt, the chairman of the Danish Police Union (Politiforbundet), said that police lack the resources to investigate all crimes.

“I am shocked and feel compelled to make a cry for help, because this is an enormous problem for residents’ rights,” Oxfeldt told BT. “If police aren’t prioritising investigations because of a lack of resources, then far too many criminals are escaping punishment. My members are finding it hard to look residents in the eye.”

Jan Bjørn, a Copenhagen Police spokesman, confirmed that there is a “rule of thumb” in his precinct that thefts should amount to over 100,000 kroner before investigators get involved.

“Clearly if there were more resources in that area, we would be able to solve more cases,” Bjørn told BT. “Everything we do is dictated by resources.”

Oxfeldt said that the police risk losing the respect and trust of the people.

Danish Palestinians Want to Help Gaza Victims

Some young Danes with Palestinian backgrounds don’t want to just sit back and watch while women and children in the Gaza strip are being killed by Israeli attacks.

Mahmoud Daoud, head of Odense’s integration council, told Fyens Stifttidende that many Danish Palestinians are ready to go to Gaza to do volunteer aid work in the war-torn region.

“I’ve talked to the first 25 people from all over the country that want to do aid work in Gaza, and I know that many of them are actively looking for a way to get down there.”

More Immigrants Than Ever Coming to Denmark

More Immigrants Than Ever Coming to Denmark

Never before have so many foreign citizens moved to Denmark as now, according to a new report from the national stats keepers, Danmarks Statistik.

Within the last year, 59,274 foreigners — hailing mostly from Europe — have arrived in Denmark. Romania leads the way with 4,919, followed by Poland (4,376), while the greatest increase comes from war-torn Syria (2,500), figures revealed.

“In particular, they are coming from EU nations,” Bent Greve, a society researcher from Roskilde University, told Metroxpress newspaper.

Denmark Tightens Asylum Laws Citing Syrian Influx

Saying that most refugee applicants “are not individually persecuted”, the justice minister introduced a new one-year resident permit that can be extended for another two years.

Denmark said on Friday it would introduce a new, temporary type of residence permit for asylum seekers fleeing civil wars such as the Syrian conflict after a huge surge in the number of applications.

The new asylum solution came on the same day the government unveiled a new plan for stemming the flow of Danish extremist fighters to Syria and Iraq.

More Danes Making the Pilgrimage to Mecca

Today marks the start of the Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. Millions of Muslims from around the world flock to the holy city to fulfill one of the five pillars of Islam. Every adult Muslim is required to make the journey once in their lifetime if they are physically and financially able to do so.

Imam Radwan Mansour from Aarhus said that interest in making the trip is growing among Denmark’s 230,000 Muslims.

“I see an increasing number wanting to make the journey,” he told Dr Nyheder.

An estimated 2.5 million Muslims will descend on Mecca during the Hajj this year. The influx in recent years has been so great that limits have been set as to how many may attend.

Denmark: Sex Between Siblings Should be Legal, Says Professor

Consensual sex between adult siblings should be legal, according to Thomas Søbirk Petersen, a professor of ethics at Roskilde University. Petersen said the rise in the number of births resulting from donor sperm that creates biological siblings who may well be from different families has created a need to rethink old taboos.

After heated debate in Germany, that country’s ethics committee has recommended that sibling sex be made legal. Petersen wants to see the same debate take place here.

“I think it’s a cop-out that a democratic society is not willing to discuss this,” Petersen told MetroXpress.

The right-wing Danish People’s Party (DF) and the libertarian party Liberal Alliance (LA) have called on Danish authorities to stop welcoming refugees – and instead put them back on the plane to their country of origin.

DF (Dansk Folkeparti, or Danish People’s Party) were more harsh and straightforward of the two, with their spokesman Martin Henriksen telling Politiko media outlet that the party would like to see no refugees in Denmark whatsoever.

“I think that with one stroke, this would make Denmark incredibly uninteresting for asylum seekers and therefore believe that the asylum figures would plummet when they can’t receive a residence permit in Denmark,” Henriksen said.

"We will still honor our obligation to help refugees, but we will just do it in a different way," he added.
DF also proposed to set up Danish-controlled refugee camps in “an African country, a country in Asia or the Middle East.”

Their colleagues from Liberal Alliance supported the cause.

“Figuratively speaking, they should be turned around at the airport, put on a plane and sent to a refugee camp in the area of where they came from,” LA leader Anders Samuelsen told Danish media outlet Jyllands-Posten.

He said that the refugees should get help abroad, unlike “the lucky ones” who manage to come to Denmark.

"We want to create a little bit of Denmark in Jordan, Lebanon or Israel, where we would be responsible for financing and operating refugee camps," Samuelsen said.

Opposition party Venstre, which is viewed as a possible successor to the current ruling Social Democrats, said the proposals were “interesting” but hasn’t expressed its full support.

“In Venstre, we have for years thought that we should help more refugees in their communities, so therefore this is of course an interesting suggestion. My worry would be whether we could get the other countries to take on the responsibility, but it’s something we will look at,” Venstre spokeswoman Inger Støjberg told Politiko.

Only the ruling Social Democrats firmly rejected the idea, calling it “obscene.”

In 2014, Denmark expects around 20,000 refugees to arrive in the country. Next year, some estimate the figure will rise to 50,000. The country’s authorities say Denmark can’t accommodate all of them, and in any case it would be "just a drop in the sea."

Denmark is planning to banish bestiality, following the recent examples of Germany and Norway, said the country’s food and agriculture minister. The bill was long-awaited both inside the country and abroad.

“I have decided that we should ban sex with animals. That is happening for numerous reasons. The most important is that in the vast majority of cases it is an attack against the animals,” the food and agriculture minister, Dan Jørgensen, told Ekstra Bladet, a Danish tabloid.

According to Jørgensen, one of the factors that prompted his decision was the damage done to his country’s reputation which laws still allow sex between humans and animals.

“And under all circumstances, any doubts about it should go to the animals’ benefit,” he said. “They naturally cannot say no to going along with it. Therefore, it should be banned.”

Seventy-six percent of the Danish population support banning sex with animals, according to a recent poll, carried out by Gallup.

The bill, which also requires changes in the country’s welfare animal laws, will be introduced by the Danish government in 2015.

The absence of a law on bestiality led to a growth in animal sex tourism industry in the country.

In the recent years the international community closely focused on the lack of bestiality law in the animal welfare system of the country.

"I don't think the Danish government is doing enough to protect the animals. They need to do something to protect zoophilia in Denmark," Karoline Lundstrom, a Danish animal rights activist says in a documentary shot by VICE in April.

Bestiality is illegal in many countries, including Belgium, Canada, Australia and India.

Sweden banned zoophilia in April 2014 in a move backed by the country’s Rural Affairs Minister, Eskil Erlandsson. "There should be no doubt whatsoever that bestiality is unacceptable," The Local cited him as saying.

In 2012 the same ban was passed in Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government introduced the new law against the practice, saying animals should not be used "for personal sexual activities or made available to third parties for sexual activities … thereby forcing them to behave in ways that are inappropriate to their species."

Denmark: Police to Investigate Imam’s Controversial Anti-Jew Speech

The police in Funen have declared that they will launch an investigation into the controversial sermon by the Danish imam Muhammed Khaled Samhas that was posted on the internet on September 19.

Samhas reportedly said in his speech that Jews were the offspring of “apes and pigs” and that Palestine was the land in which the Muslims will fight the Jews and the “trees and stones will say: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him”.

“We are looking into whether there is anything punishable in the speech,” Ebbe Krogaard, the deputy police inspector at Funen Police, told Politiken newspaper. “It hasn’t been reported to us, so we are doing it on our own initiative.”

Denmark: Justice Minister: Burkas Are Awful But Legislation’s Not the Answer

It has been under discussion for some time, and today parliament is debating a proposal by Dansk Folkeparti (DF) to ban the wearing of burkas and similar garments in Denmark.

Mette Frederiksen, the justice minister, told BT today she believes burkas are of a bygone era and have no place in Denmark, but she doesn’t believe that they should be legislated against.

Two Romanians who came to Denmark in 2009 were exploited by their Serbian employers, who worked them 18 hours a day.

Two Serbians were found guilty in a Helsingør court on Tuesday for exploiting a Romanian couple, according to Ritzau.

The Romanians spent three years living on a balcony in Helsingør and worked long hours for just 3,000 kroner ($500) per month.

They were brought to Denmark by a 41-year-old Serbian man and his 44-year-old Serbian female partner, who were found guilty of gross usury for making the Romanians work off their transportation costs by doing various cleaning jobs for up to 18 hours a day. When they weren’t working, they lived on an apartment balcony.

The 41-year-old Serbian man was sentenced to two years in prison, a 275,000 kroner fine and expulsion from Denmark, while the women will serve 18 months, pay a 115,000 kroner fine and also be kicked out of the country.

The Serbians were also ordered to pay each of the Romanians 500,000 kroner.

Police estimate that the Romanians were cheated out of a total of 875,000 kroner that should have come to them in wages but instead went into the Serbian couple's company bank account. The company served as a subcontractor for Danish cleaning giant Forende Service, which has been involved in previous cases involving the exploitation of eastern European cleaning personnel.

In court, the Romanian man said that they didn’t mind living on a balcony.

“We slept on the balcony. We had a place where we could sleep and had a little table. We were satisfied and it wasn’t cold in the winter,” Ritzau quoted the man as saying in court.

Activist and writer Peter Kofod argues that the trial of Swedish Pirate Bay founder Gottfrid Svartholm Warg represented a total failure on the part of the Danish police and legal system.

Swedish Pirate Bay Founder (and WikiLeaks-volunteer) Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, also known as Anakata, and a young Danish computer specialist were convicted on Thursday in what has been called the biggest hacking attack in Danish history. The two young men are charged with hacking the US-based company CSC, which contracts for the Danish state. CSC, among other things, is supposed to handle highly sensitive data about citizens in Denmark: social security numbers, driving licences and the database containing information about European Arrest Warrants.

Both suspects have been held in remand under miserable and highly problematic conditions since 2013. Prior to his arrest, Anakata was dragged through a very similar case in Sweden, in which he was found not guilty of hacking into Nordea.

What happened in court on Thursday was a full frontal assault on Denmark as a country with a rule of law. Two individuals were convicted of serious crimes without a shred of evidence of their guilt being presented in court. At this point I should clarify: I’m NOT saying they’re innocent – or that they’re guilty. I have no way of knowing and in principle it doesn’t matter at all. What’s important is, that NOBODY can know, because no evidence has been presented proving that they are guilty as charged. We’re in banana republic territory here.

For instance, the leading judge said in court that when it came to the most crucial technical detail in the case – Anakata’s claim that his computer was remotely accessed – the defendant couldn’t prove his innocence. That’s absolutely insane. People aren’t supposed to have to prove their innocence. In a civilised country, people can be convicted if – and only if – the prosecution is able to prove beyond any reasonable doubt that they are guilty. That simply didn’t happen here in Denmark on Thursday.

Somehow they nevertheless got away with it, perhaps because the case is of a technical nature (hacking, remote access and other geeky stuff) and because the case has been framed so as to show that the defendants are a couple of nasty bastards. Both matters naturally should be of no consequence. It doesn’t matter if a case is highly technical – or if the defendants are paedophiles, Nazis or communists. One should still have the right to a fair trial. In this case, the two defendants simply didn’t get that.

Instead we’ve seen police and prosecution lie to parliament about hugely important matters in the case.

We’ve seen the police lie to the judge in court (minutes after being told that they had the duty to tell the truth). They even got caught lying, but suffered no consequences at all.

We’ve also seen that CSC, which is getting rich taking care of all of our sensitive data, has been so extremely poor at securing their systems (or so indifferent) that a bunch of monkeys with typewriters would’ve been able to do a better job. In short: it didn’t take a ‘super hacker’ to get access to the systems.

Whatever else is true in this shameful show trial, one thing is crystal clear: CSC should be facing prosecutions as well. And they will.

Finally we’ve seen that the Danish police were awfully negligent in investigating what everybody in Denmark says is the most important case of its kind ever: They sat on their hands for eight months after Swedish police told them that CSC was being hacked and begged them to take action. Afterwards the Danish police lied to parliament and the court about it. They also let CSC investigate the crime instead of doing it themselves. The same CSC that is a key part to the case. The same CSC that has everything to hide because the company would love to extend its lucrative contracts with the Danish state. When was the last time a private company was allowed to investigate themselves? It’s absurd!

If I call the police and claim that my neighbour killed my wife, I don’t think the police will rely exclusively on my version of events. I certainly don’t hope so. I’d want them to first of all check IF my wife is indeed dead. If she is, hopefully they’ll investigate all leads, both those pointing to our neighbour as the perpetrator and those pointing towards other suspects (including myself).

But that hasn’t happened in this ‘trial of century’. Instead the company has investigated their own systems while the police lied through their teeth and refused to look at anything relevant to the case except for the bits and pieces that could incriminate the two suspects.

This is a full blown scandal – and it’s really, really important that the media, international as well as Danish, begin treating it as such. This IS a full frontal attack on the rule of law. Next time, the case might not be highly technical – and the suspects might not be people that can be considered weird, nasty bastards. Then we’re all fucked.
