New 'anti-authoritarian' challenge
Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - 21:44 New challenge from the "anti-authoritarians" who in reality by their actions serve the darkest designs of power. Para Moving to the known rates they deserve, a group of them broke into the building yesterday NAT in Piraeus 'protest' the decision of the administration of the Fund to put an end to the occupation of a listed building on the road Patision 61 and Scaramanga in the center of Athens. The historic building, which is connected with the life of Maria Callas in Greece, although it belongs to the NAT, but it has occupied since March 2009 by "anarchists." Bullying, acting as "anti-authoritarians" threatened the President of the Fund, who said: "I take photos and directly threatened, saying" we know who you are and where you live. '" He complained to the police of indifference, as "young" anirtisan banner on the roof, distributed literature and left undisturbed. These buildings, which have become occupations, belong to the Greek people and not the thugs who have turned to illegal acts bases of operations, servicing, directly or indirectly, the dark plans of a deep para. Do remind me; Who was it (as the only major political figure in modern time) that actually stood up, took a stance, and fought against this international usurious-system? (And damn nearly beat it.) US Embassy Warns Americans of Attacks in Greece
ATHENS, Greece November 16, 2012 (AP) The U.S. Embassy in Athens updated its travel advice Friday for American citizens visiting Greek cities, warning them to beware of the possibility of "unprovoked harassment and violent attacks" against people who could be mistaken for foreign migrants. Greece has seen an increase in racist violence over the past year, with dark-skinned migrants attacked by groups of men armed with metal bars, knives and wooden bats. Tens of thousands of migrants have also been rounded up by police in a government crackdown on illegal immigration. The country has also seen a rise in popularity of the extreme nationalist Golden Dawn party, which went from a fringe group in 2009 elections to win nearly 7 percent of the vote and 18 seats in the 300-member Parliament in June. The party advocates that all immigrants should be expelled, but denies its members have been involved in racist attacks. In a security message, the embassy said the State Department's travel section had been "updated to inform U.S. citizens of a rise in unprovoked harassment and violent attacks against persons who, because of their complexion, are perceived to be foreign migrants. U.S. citizens most at risk are those of African, Asian, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern descent in Athens and other major cities." The travel advice on Greece also said the embassy "has confirmed reports of U.S. African-American citizens detained by police authorities conducting sweeps for illegal immigrants in Athens." Tourism is a major source of revenue in Greece, and the country is sensitive to any travel advice that might affect visitors. The country is struggling through a deep financial crisis that has left one in four Greeks out of work and the country facing a sixth year of a recession. "Greece was and remains a safe country," Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras said in a statement. "The isolated incidents of racist violence which have occurred are foreign to Greeks, our civilization and the long tradition of Greek hospitality." Delavekouras stressed that the government was "following a zero tolerance policy" against such incidents "and is taking all the necessary measures for the prevention and suppression of such behavior, which we condemn." On Thursday, police said a 31-year-old Greek policeman had been arrested on suspicion of robbing migrants at gunpoint in a racially tense part of central Athens. The muggings took place in the capital's Aghios Panteleimon district, home to thousands of immigrants from Asia and Africa — many of whom entered Greece illegally. The crime-ridden area has become a flashpoint of recent racist attacks, with gangs of ultranationalists smashing immigrants' shops and attacking dark-skinned people. http://abcnews.go.com/International/...0#.UKe68vn5_To |

The Greek Left and the Rise of Neo-Fascism
By Panagiotis Sotiris November 17, 2012 For the past months there has been an intense debate both in Greece but also in international media regarding the rise of the neo-fascist Golden Dawn in Greece. The reason is obvious: for the first time in a European Union (EU) country a political party that in contrast to most of the varieties of the European far Right does little to hide its openly neo-nazi ideology and the culture of the nazi street gang that has been its trademark since the 1990s, has been one of the rising political forces. Until now the most common mainstream attitude regarding the Golden Dawn is to treat it as a worrying exception in a period of social and political crisis. This is echoed in the official discourse about the rise of the political “extremes” in Greece (the other extreme being the Left) against which the institutions of liberal democracy must be defended. However, what is missing from this discourse on Golden Dawn as an extreme exception is a serious discussion of what led to its spectacular entrance in the Greek political scene. Such a discussion and scrutiny would have shown that the rise of Golden Dawn would not have been possible, without the persisting reproduction in the discourse of the traditional Greek Right of very authoritarian conservative “law and order” elements, galvanized by the equally persisting ideological and institutional anticommunism that is the common trait that links the collaborators with the Nazis during the Occupation, the post-Civil War governments that imprisoned and executed left wing militants, the 1967-74 military dictatorship, and the post-1974 authoritarian democracy. This long authoritarian and anticommunist tradition of the Greek Right that can also account for the conscious choice, for many years, of the leadership of the security forces to not only tolerate but also endorse far-right ideological orientations especially within police special forces, based on the assumption that only a perverse combination of militarism and fascism can make a 20 year old believe that the merciless beating of protesters is a decent way to make a living. The result is that in the 2012 general election approximately 50 per cent of riot police voted for Golden Dawn. Blaming the Immigrants Moreover, the rise of the Golden Dawn cannot be explained without taking into account the conscious choice from the part of mainstream parties, New Democracy and PASOK, to endorse anti-immigrant politics and rhetoric and open racism. When in January 2011 PASOK ministers were referring to the 300 heroic immigrant hunger strikers as if they were sub-humans and were planning a big program of building new detention centers, or when today the Samaras government announces a crackdown on “illegal immigrants,” it is obvious that the average Golden Dawn member or supporter feels entirely justified in promoting and engaging in open violence against immigrants. In the same manner, such official anti-immigrant policies act as a justification for those employers who rely on immigrant labour to engage in extreme cases of exploitation and violence, exemplified in the recent beating and chaining of an Egyptian immigrant working at a bakery in Salamis who simply demanded to get his wages. No wonder that such strata of small employers have increasingly turned toward the fascists. At the same time the rise of Golden Dawn is also an indication of an extreme social and political crisis in Greece and widespread feelings of anger that do not always take the form of collective struggle. When anger takes the form of such an individualized despair and is combined with the repulsing ideological residue of authoritarianism, conservatism, nationalism, “lumpen” sexism and violence, still pervading aspects of Greek society, then it takes the form not of social solidarity and common struggle but of a variety of social cannibalism that can easily be represented and manipulated by the fascists. In order to understand the rise of Golden Dawn, we must also take into consideration another important development in the past two years, namely the fact that the political system has more or less endorsed the transition toward an authoritarian “state of emergency” as a result of the economic crisis. The practice of passing laws through parliament in special fast sessions, without any actual discussion, even if we are talking about the complete overhaul of labour law, the dismantling of social rights through simple acts of cabinet, the extreme police violence against protesters and the intensified effort toward the penalization of collective forms of protest (occupations etc.), lead to the legitimization of a “strong State” that will “deal with anomie.” This, in its turn, only gives extra legitimacy to the Golden Dawn’s openly authoritarian, ultra-conservative, and – despite the populist references to “Greek workers” – openly pro-business discourse. In a way we are dealing with complementary processes: On the one hand we have the authoritarian turn of government and state practices, in a combination of neoliberalism and authoritarian statism, in a situation marked by open political crisis, an erosion of popular sovereignty and a complete disregard for democratic procedure. On the other hand, we have a shift of the discourse of mainstream parties to the right, both as an expression of the changes in policies and strategy but also as a result of the rise of Golden Dawn, which also acts as a catalyst for this right wing turn. The recent wave of anti-immigrant raids by Greek police and the decision of the Samaras government to make naturalization even more difficult (in a country where naturalization was already practically impossible for most immigrants) are just some of the examples of these changes. This does not mean that we are dealing simply with Golden Dawn changing the political debate; in reality mainstream parties use the rise of Golden Dawn as an opportunity to bring forward their own more conservative positions. In light of the above, the cynicism of the “two extremes” schema becomes evident. According to this the social and political crisis has led large segments of Greek society in a state of anomie exemplified both in “anomic” social protests, but also the rise of Golden Dawn. For some neoliberal commentators the rise of Golden Dawn is an indirect result of the 2011 Movement of the Squares, because of the latter’s supposedly “anti-parliamentary” and “populist” discourse. Nothing is further from the truth. Were it not for the Movement of the Squares in May-June 2011, that followed the winter 2010-2011 with its series of racist attacks, the situation regarding the far Right would have been worse. In reality, the “two extremes theory” is an attack on mass movements and the Left. By hypocritically attacking Golden Dawn’s “anomie” they attempt to legitimize the backlash against mass protest, the use of extremely violent police practices (preventive arrests, plastic bullets, water cannons), the attempt to penalize forms of protest that until now were considered legitimate (occupations of public buildings etc.). Combating the Right “The answer to the Golden Dawn can only come from the Left and mass social movements. And this is an urgent task, since currently the rise of the appeal of Golden Dawn acts as a barrier to the further shift to the Left of petty bourgeois and labour strata that until recently were part of the electorate of mainstream parties. ” Therefore it is no use for the Left to think the potential answer to the rise of Golden Dawn in terms of a broad alliance of the parties of the “constitutional arc.” Despite their rhetoric condemnation of Golden Dawn, both PASOK and DHMAR (Democratic Left) have pushed for the current authoritarian turn and have accepted the condition of limited democracy and popular sovereignty imposed by the EU-IMF-ECB Troika. The answer to the Golden Dawn can only come from the Left and mass social movements. And this is an urgent task, since currently the rise of the appeal of Golden Dawn acts as a barrier to the further shift to the Left of petty bourgeois and labour strata that until recently were part of the electorate of mainstream parties. But this means the Left must deal with important challenges: A) It is well known that fascist movements are always fuelled by despair and insecurity, especially individualized despair. Unless broad segments of society regain some form of collective confidence in the ability to change their lives, through struggle, collective fight and solidarity, one can expect the continuous rise of fascists. The simple promise of a Left government cannot lead to such a collective confidence. If we cannot show that collective struggle can make sure that no household will be without electricity, no person without some access to medical care, no child without school lunch, if we do not manage to actually resist aspects of the austerity measures, if we do not show that solidarity between Greek and immigrant workers is the best way to make neighborhoods safer, then the appeal of the Golden Dawn, with all its over-publicized acts of “solidarity only for Greeks,” will continue to rise. Golden Dawn is trying to build the forms of its own reactionary hegemony in segments of the subaltern classes; the Left has not the luxury of simply waiting for governmental power as a “ripe fruit.” B) Moreover, the Left should not leave “national” references to the fascists. The current conjuncture also takes the form of a national crisis. Not in the sense described by traditionally reactionary nationalist discourse about a “conspiracy of foreigners against the nation,” but in the sense that the almost neocolonial supervision of a society by the Troika, the attempt to turn Greece into a “Special Economic Zone” for foreign capital, the new forms of “European Economic Governance,” lead to a condition of limited national and popular sovereignty that Greek capital fully accepts as a means to impose an aggressive accumulation regime. The Left needs to rethink some form of collective identity for the people living and working in this country, not in the sense of nationalism but of the collective effort to build a common future. The anticapitalist social alliance that can lead to the “Socialism of the 21st Century” cannot be some form of a “nomadic multitude.” It will be much closer to a renewed form of a “sovereign people” engaged in a democratic process of social transformation. C) The Left cannot leave questions of corruption to the far Right rhetoric. Attacking corruption and the links between mainstream politicians and Capital does not mean endorsing some form of reactionary discourse on “cleptocracy.” Nor does it mean fantasizing about a more “moral” capitalism. But capitalism is not only about impersonal social forms and structures; it is also based on very specific money ties between business and politics. During the Movement of the Squares actions, one of the most common thing to be heard was the repeated cry “Thieves!” directed against parliament, this was not a manifestation of a right-wing “antipolitical” stance, but a justified reaction against a political class that has combined full endorsement of aggressive neoliberalism with increasing personal wealth. D) Finally the Left does not have the luxury to avoid direct confrontation with the fascists and their military and territorial conception of politics in terms of controlling areas and neighborhoods. Although anti-fascist politics, as shown above, have mainly to do with creating conditions of a renewed radical Left hegemony, finding ways to drive fascists outside of neighborhoods and preventing them from freely operating is a crucial challenge for the Left. Greek society is at a crossroads. The forces of capital have made it clear that they have adopted a “no holds barred” aggressive and authoritarian tactic. The rise of Golden Dawn, regardless of how long it will last or whether it will be countered by a process of reconstruction of the Right, is already acting as a catalyst for an authoritarian political and ideological turn. No wonder that the current rising star in New Democracy is Makis Voridis, an ex far-Right militant that is combining aggressive authoritarianism with an equally aggressive neoliberalism! Therefore, the challenge for the Left is not simply to rely on electoral trends but to build an alternative hegemony. Otherwise, the danger of an even reactionary turn will remain imminent. Panagiotis Sotiris teaches social theory, social and political philosophy at the Department of Sociology of the University of the Aegean and maintains a blog at lastingfuture.blogspot.gr where this article first appeared. He can be reached at psot_AT_soc.aegean.gr http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-gre...ascism/5312125 Shitty analysis from a typically stupid and long-winded professor-moron. What do you think about the slogan "Greece for Greeks," Mr. sociologist? Oh, you're against it? Greece belongs to the entire world? Well, that would explain your politics - and those of the nationalists of Golden Dawn. The left is at war with the normal people of all nations. Samaras Stripping Greeks’ Civil Liberties
By Andy Dabilis on November 17, 2012 Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ plans to repeal laws granting citizenship to second-generation immigrants who were born in Greece, speak Greek and go to Greek school, and his embarrassing double jeopardy re-trial of an investigative journalist who revealed the names of Greeks with secret Swiss bank accounts who hadn’t been checked for tax evasion, shows him to be just another right-wing goon in glasses dressed up in a nice suit with an Amherst degree and a straw man for rising extremism. Prosecutors, taking their direction from Samaras and the far-right wing Golden Dawn party, also are going to put on trial for blasphemy the organizers, producer, cast and crew of American playwright Terrence McNally’s Corpus Christi, which portrays Jesus Christ and his disciples as gay and living in Texas. Great, now Greece has a neo-dictator as well as neo-Nazis, and just in time for the Nov. 17 celebration of the student uprising in 1973 at the Athens Polytechnio that led to the downfall of an American-backed military junta. Samaras was a college student then too, in the United States, and opposed to the Colonels who ran his country, but now is emulating some of their tactics. At least he hasn’t put a tank on the streets yet, unless you count the water cannon he had brought out to spray anarchists and protesters against crippling austerity measures he’s imposing after lying before the June 17 elections when he said he would oppose the conditions. He also wants to let police fire rubber bullets at demonstrators who are upset that pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions have pushed 20 percent of Greeks into poverty, and a lot of them – including a young nurse who was fired recently and jumped out a window in Athens – to choose suicide over living under a repressive government that has stripped many people of all hope and now is trying to do the same to their civil liberties. You’d think that Iraklis Pasalidis, who got drubbed and embarrassed worldwide for prosecuting journalist Costas Vaxevanis for publishing the names of 2,059 Greeks with $1.95 billion in the Geneva branch of HSBC would have had the decency to take the beating and crawl away, hoping people would forget instead of resurrecting charges that smell like a politician with a bag full of someone else’s money. It took the judge a heartbeat to acquit Vaxevanis because the case was so bogus and an obvious political persecution. HANG ‘EM HIGH “Greek people have known for two years now that there is a list of people who are rich, rightly or wrongly, and they are untouchable. At the same time, the (Greek people) are on the other side, they are suffering cuts,” Vaxevanis told the court in a trial that came only days after he was arrested while tax evaders – those few who are arrested in public relations sham shows – won’t face prosecution for up to a decade, and probably never. The case points out another critical difference between a real democracy like the United States, and a plutocratic oligarchy like Greece: in America, you go home if you’re acquitted. In Greece, you can be arrested again because prosecutors can keep coming after you on the same charges until they find a hanging judge, or Samaras issues the verdict. While much of the Greek media virtually ignored Vaxevanis’ trial because it’s in cahoots with politicians and the rich, it was left to reporters from international news agencies to let the world know that Greece was going after journalists for doing the government’s work. After hearing the news that he would be prosecuted again for a crime he didn’t commit and for which he was exonerated by the courts, Vaxevanis Twittered more truths about the government which still hasn’t checked a single name on the list of Greek depositors, some of whom he said can’t account for their riches. “While society demands disclosure, they cover up,” he said, pointing a finger right in Samaras’ face. RIGHT TURNS ONLY Samaras, seeing Golden Dawn rise in the polls while support is slipping for his New Democracy Uber-Capitalists and uneasy coalition government that includes the PASOK Anti-Socialists and Democratic Right Left Hut-Hut party of Fotis Kouvelis, a gutless wonder who voted “present” on austerity measures he pretended to oppose, has taken a hard turn to the right and headed toward junta mentality territory. He’s said nothing while Golden Dawn thugs beat up immigrants, perhaps emboldened by his implicit support for their tactics and his statements ahead of elections he narrowly won that he wants all immigrants out of the country too, preferably put on a sinking boat and pushed out to sea. Ahead of the Nov. 17 anniversary, the U.S. Embassy in Athens issued a warning that Americans who don’t look like George Washington or King Leonidas, but are of Latino, African, Asian or Middle Eastern descent, should be wary of venturing around Greece, a further humiliation for Samaras who’s apparently not going to stop until he disembowels the Greek Constitution and strips away civil liberties while he drives Greece toward becoming Syria. Greek police, under orders from the government, have for months been rounding up virtually every immigrant they can find in a search for those in the country unlawfully. They should be deported, but not using tactics that remind of Nazis stopping people and asking for their papers. The U.S. Embassy said it “confirmed reports of U.S. African-American citizens detained by police authorities conducting sweeps for illegal immigrants in Athens.” That came as Tourism Minister Olga Kefaloyianni said she would shake up the country’s notoriously incompetent Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) after a disastrous summer caused largely by the country’s crushing economic crisis and images of strikes, protests, riots, and tourism workers shutting down ferry boats, transportation and even the international airport. What’s the motto now? Come to Greece, Get Arrested! THIS IS NOT THE POLYTECHNIC Greeks have nowhere to turn: the major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) is run by a Leftist reality denier, Alexis Tsipras, who doesn’t want international bailouts paying the reduced salaries and pensions of Greeks, nor foreign investors. PASOK, under its failed leader and former finance minister Evangelos “Emperor” Venizelos – who doubled income and property taxes – is backing more austerity measures but not the kind of real reform that can save Greece. His party includes Maria Damanaki, who was the voice of the student uprising 39 years ago but now has lent hers to the rich and privileged. Pasalidis, who who should be chasing tax cheats who owe the country $70 billion while his government is cutting pay, raising taxes, slashing pensions and turning off the lights and power of 30,000 people a month who can’t pay their utility bills, accused Vaxevanis of “turning the country into a coliseum” by defaming people without determining their guilt. At least Vaxevanis, who said the the names of bank account holders were not private and that the case “not a legal issue but a very important social and political one,” wasn’t throwing poor people – nor any sense of justice or the rule of real law – to the lions. Vaxevanis, who Pasalidis said in a lame attack wanted to “crucify” people, retorted that, “The political system has been hiding the truth for so long.” It’s the government of Samaras that wants to put its critics on the cross and if he does, maybe he can charged with blasphemy. If he’s found innocent, he can be tried again until he’s found guilty, but don’t count on it. This is the real voice Greece now. http://greece.greekreporter.com/2012...vil-liberties/ |

Canadian Leftwing Fishwrap
Here is another left wing Canadian fishwrap. There is talk of a recent interview of a Montreal spokesman of Golden Dawn by CBC. Someone should find it and post it.

Tolerant, Pacifist Greek “Anti-Fascist Activist” Darlings Of The International Media Launch Petrol Bombs At Golden Dawn Pictured: 21st Century Anarchist opens up his jacket. A pacifist, freedom-loving victim of Fascist torture according to The Guardian and the New York Times. In a brazen act of terrorism the mainstream media more or less ignored, the peace loving heroes of “anti-Fascism” lionized by the Western plutocratic monopoly press used petrol bombs against nationalists and then police during the inaugeration of a Golden Dawn office in Athens. http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/337198 “According to To Vima anti-authoritarians tried to reach the Golden Dawn office and as police prevented them they hurled Molotov cocktails at police. Protesters caused damage to two bank ATM’s, riot police were called, and two people were arrested. This year Greek media has reported several attacks on Golden Dawn offices throughout Greece. On Sunday “Golden Dawn’s offices in Karditsa and Xanthi in northern Greece were vandalized by unknown assailants” according to Ekathimerini. The New York Times reported Golden Dawn member of Parliament Nikolaos Michos referred to leftist death threats and the burning of a Golden Dawn office, saying “We’re fighters and we’re not going to back down. But they’re not striking fear into us because every center they destroy, we’ll build new ones.” It’s interesting to muse what the reaction of the New York Times would be if Golden Dawners had bombed the office of SYRIZA (who openly support these Anarchists) or some leftist drug den. It’s obvious that it would make front page news! In fact, when most people hear about violence in Greece, the Pavlovian effect has been conditioned to think: “Golden Dawn is the root of all evil”. The plutocratic liars in the media treat their Leftist street criminals much like a mother treats her spoiled brat son after getting arrested for murder: “My little angel would never…!” . They are using these hooligans in an attempt to stifle and terrorize Golden Dawn from getting their message out to a receptive public that is sick of both Leftist shananigans and conservative treason, two groups that incidently tend to agree more than disagree! Constant winks and nods by the media and SYRIZA to some misguided middle class students and squatters implicates them in all of these crimes. Some brainwashed sheeple, prompted by the scripted illusions of what is happening in Greece created for them on CNN and BBC, may think attempting to murder Greek nationalists is justified (especially in the minds of the self-described “tolerant, liberal” people). Perhaps masked hoodlums bombing Golden Dawn members and offices is not something to cause you concern. But Anarchist and Communist violence does not end there… In 2010 Anarchists firebombed a commercial bank branch (not even a big investment bank-morons!) which left all of Greece in shock. Inside there were numerous people, all of them working class commoners, doing their job or managing their funds. The heinous attack left 3 people dead, including a pregnant woman that was doing nothing wrong except working her simple bank teller job! http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news...0506-ub0a.html While the elites in finance and press try desperately to pin immigrant-on-immigrant murders on Golden Dawn, the Leftists they parade as victims on television have their hands drenched in the blood of innocents. To the ones who pay lip service to tolerance, democracy, and the brotherhood of man, anyone even in the same vicinity of something they don’t like is marked for death. For all the talk of “Golden Dawn violence” (all they can go on is a slap and smashing unlicensed booths hocking smuggled merchandise) , it would be nice if the journalist defenders of international usury would at least pretend to be objective. But that isn’t what they’re there for, the media is here to scratch the backs of Left-wing terrorists so that they, SYRIZA’s Leftist street criminal bloc (led by the bought off clone of Andreas Papandreou, Alexis Tsipras) can save the soft, bloated oligarchs, sell-outs, and bankers as the Golden Dawn steadily approaches. But it won’t work. Capital has failed the Greek people, and Leftists have completely alienated them with their refusal to evolve past the 68er mentality, the 3rd position against both is the only viable solution for a Hellenic resurgence. At the end of the day, Nationalists are violent mostly in self-defense, while the poor, helpless Anarchists anonymously (after refusing to file police reports) claiming they got tortured by Hitler and Mussolini. While Golden Dawn does everything possible to work within the law, it’s opponents are willing to sink as low as it takes to win. With everyone from neo-con pundit Glenn Beck, the cultural Marxist E.U. seats of power in Brussels, all the way to the controlled opposition Occupy Wall Street, directly or indirectly jumping on the “Stop Golden Dawn by any means necessary” bandwagon, one must think if these individuals and groups have any moral compass what so ever. They don’t, they are either blinded by hate or money . |

Only pirate criminals with financial backing of TPTB would dare throw gasoline bombs in Greece.
I told Friends that the enemies of humanity would start to give Greece the Syrian treatment soon, and that the criminals regime media would cheer them. These bastard criminals, must get their virgin dogs first before fighting/doing cowardly sabotage and blind siding Greeks with violence.

Would be nice to have a master list of documented leftist terrorist activity in Greece. |
