He'll keep board seat; some give him standing ovation

Stephen Johnson

Stephen B. Johnson last night resigned as chairman of the Richmond School Board but announced he will keep his seat on the board.

Last week, he admitted posting a bare-chested photo and explicitly worded profile of himself on a pornographic Internet dating site.

"In light of recent events, and in the best interest of Richmond Public Schools, I've decided to step down as chairman of the board effective immediately," he said last night.

"I do not make this decision lightly but after careful consideration of everyone affected by my actions, I not only accept responsibility for my actions but I make this decision because I believe it's in the best interest of our public schools.

"I will, however, retain my seat on the board representing the 5th District until such time as the voters of the 5th District feel I can no longer effectively represent them."

Superintendent Deborah Jewell-Sherman, who remained silent earlier in the week, last night supported Johnson.

"I want to publicly thank Mr. Stephen B. Johnson for the tremendous job he has done over the last year as chairman of the School Board," she said during the meeting.

"He has worked tirelessly on behalf of the boys and girls of Richmond, and I don't believe we would be where we are as a school district with the accomplishments we have were it not for his leadership and the support that he has from this board."

"I have never been prouder of you, Mr. Johnson, than I am tonight when you put before your own personal feelings the well-being of the Richmond Public School Board."

She stood and began applauding. Nearly everyone in the packed room joined her.

Jewell-Sherman then embraced Johnson.

Four members of the public spoke about Johnson at last night's meeting. All supported Johnson and two of them blasted The Times-Dispatch for bringing the issue to light.

"Indeed this is a hurtful thing," said Richmond school bus driver Marian Brooks. "All of us do wrong and fall short of the promise. . . . Whoever did this, their days are coming and they will get it back. Mr. Johnson did no wrong."

Again there was applause.

Last night Johnson thanked the public for what he called an outpouring of support.

On the Times-Dispatch's Web site, which allows readers to react to some stories, comments following a story about Johnson in yesterday's paper ran almost 3-to-1 in support of the embattled board member as if 11 p.m. yesterday.

A petition backing Johnson was faring well last night.

Anne Soffee, an author who lives on Richmond's South Side and attended city schools, started an online petition in his support Sunday night.

Soffee said she does not know Johnson personally but is familiar with him because of neighborhood and political groups to which she belongs.

"Steve was always more than willing to talk to us," she said. "He was very willing to listen to us."

As of about 9 p.m. Soffee's petition had 143 online signatures, though about a dozen people had clearly signed twice.

Some have maintained that Johnson's actions should not be excused.

After news of Johnson's explicit Internet posting was first published, Richmond resident John Monet began circulating a petition urging Johnson to resign his seat.

Yesterday Monet said he had gathered just five signatures.

Richmond public school teacher Nancy McConnell said she doubted that a teacher could keep a job with the school system after a similar posting. "I would question his ability to make any decent decisions," she said.

"What parent would want to send their child to my class?" she asked. "I don't think a teacher would be able to keep her job."

Last night, Johnson apologized for his actions and said, "In a moment that I wish I could take back, I displayed an inappropriate lack of judgment. Albeit momentarily, that does not excuse the action nor mitigate the consequence."

But he said he still felt he had a lot to offer as a board member.

After last night's meeting board member Carol A.O. Wolf said Johnson made the right decision.

"It's really sad and I'm sorry we're having to deal with it," she said. "But I'm really glad Steve decided to deal with it and took responsibility and didn't blame anybody. I'm just glad he was willing to step up."

"It's not like the first time Richmond's had a politician get in trouble for having not known how to behave properly," she added.

Wolf said she felt that by stepping down as chairman, Johnson acknowledged his mistake. She said that if Johnson had resigned his seat on the board, further turmoil and distraction would have ensued.

"In terms of trying to minimize the stress on both fronts, he made the right choice," she said.

The board's vice chairwoman, M. Gail Townes, took over as chairwoman last night, but the board did not select a new vice-chairman to replace her. Board attorney Kimberly Friend-Smith said the board can operate without a vice chairman until its organizational meeting in January, when members will vote to determine both the chairman and vice chairman for the next year.

Jeez, what is this guy? 50? 55? And he still is obsessed with having strange sex with strange men? Do fags ever grow up? Why should a man so irresponsible be allowed to oversee children's education? He's not qualified to be anywhere near children, much less be a member of a school board.
