[Anyone remember the Asian Vietgook shrimpers who also raised big concerns when they invaded the Gulf region in the seventies?]

Giant shrimp raises big concern as it invades the Gulf

Asian tiger prawn has scientists worried

By MATTHEW TRESAUGUE, HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Updated Saturday, December 24, 2011

A tiger prawn is displayed by shrimp trawler Capt. Tony Perez. The foot-long female was caught about 60 miles south of the Louisiana coast near Morgan City in October.

A truly jumbo shrimp is causing big worries about the future of the Gulf of Mexico's ecosystem.

The Asian tiger prawn, a foot-long crustacean with a voracious appetite and a proclivity for disease, has invaded the northern Gulf, threatening prized native species, from crabs and oysters to smaller brown and white shrimp.

Though no one is sure what the ecological impact will be, scientists fear a tiger prawn takeover could knock nature's balance out of whack and turn a healthy, diverse marine habitat into one dominated by a single invasive species.

"It has the potential to be real ugly," said Leslie Hartman, Matagorda Bay ecoystem leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "But we just do not know."

The tiger prawns from the western Pacific - which can grow up to 13 inches long - have been spreading along the Gulf Coast since 2006, but their numbers took off this year. Shrimpers pulled one from Texas waters for the first time in June.

In all, shrimpers have found three tiger prawns in Aransas Bay, one in Sabine Lake near the Louisiana border and one in Gulf waters about 70 miles from Freeport, according to the Texas Sea Grant program at Texas A&M University.

Marine scientists will conduct genetic studies on the shrimp to determine their origin. Hartman said they will need at least 60 prawns for an accurate analysis.

Several theories

Some speculate that the Gulf invasion began with an accidental release of farmed prawns in South Carolina in 1988. Another theory: The prawns may have escaped from flooded industrial shrimp ponds in the Caribbean Sea during recent hurricanes.

The threat underscores concerns about large-scale fish farming, also known as aquaculture, in the Gulf. The federal government opened the waters to fish farms in 2009 despite fears from environmental and fishing interests over how to protect wild stocks.

Disease normally would exist in relatively low levels in fish around the Gulf but can run rampant in densely packed fish farms. Tiger prawns are a known carrier of at least 16 viruses, such as white spot, which can be lethal to shrimp.

The Gulf policy calls for only native species to be farmed, but it does not have the force of law, said George Leonard, who leads the Ocean Conservancy's aquaculture program.

"We need to be really, really cautious," Leonard said. "There has to be rules and regulations."

No farming of species

Texas allows industrial-scale shrimp ponds, but requires permits for the cultivation of non-native species. No one in the state is farming tiger prawns, said Tony Reisinger, a marine and coastal resources expert for the Texas Sea Grant program.

Marine scientists have yet to find any juvenile tiger prawns in Texas waters, a sign that the species is breeding. It is a difficult assignment because they look similar to native white shrimp at a young age.

Tiger prawns weigh more than a half-pound and have distinctive black and white stripes on the tail. They eat the same types of food as native shrimp species, but also prey on their smaller cousins, as well as crabs and young oysters.

"It's a large, competitive species," Reisinger said.

It's also tasty, fetching a higher market price than native brown shrimp on the New York market this month.

Some shrimpers have wondered if the large prawns could become the fourth harvestable shrimp species off the Texas coast.

Hartman, of Texas Parks and Wildlife, is skeptical.

"It could be another crop, but at the expense of our native crop," she said.

Either way, I want to eat it.

You know, there is a difference between real fears of invasive species and the loss of a needed ecosystem and the plaintiff cries of established fisherman who perhaps have too much invested in the harvesting of native species.

This might bore the average person because of its lack of sensationalism, but Cheatgrass has eliminated extensive amounts of wildlife by destroying the natural habitat. The range for which this grows is immense. I have heard government worker stating that this is the most destructive and detrimental factor in reducing wildlife.

Plague of wild pigs has U.S. authorities squealing

By Kevin Murphy

LOCUST GROVE, Okla. | Sat Aug 24, 2013

Aug 24 (Reuters) - A few years ago, Jim Vich would not have dreamed of setting up an elaborate trap to catch wild hogs.

But that was before Oklahoma was invaded by a plague of pigs that devour crops, uproot pastures, destroy wildlife habitats, spread disease to humans and animals, kill trees and even knock over cemetery stones.

"I started trapping them more or less in self-defense," said Vich, 60, a livestock farmer in northeast Oklahoma. "They were tearing up my place."

Oklahoma is battling a wild pig problem that has spread across the United States. The pigs, evolved from introduced wild boars or from escaped domestic stock, are prevalent in 36 states and have been sighted in 47 states, according to authorities who track their populations.

They are vicious critters that typically grow to 200 pounds, can run 30 miles per hour, jump three feet high and climb out of traps with walls up to six feet high, experts say.

"They are the ultimate survivors," said John Mayer, manager of the environmental science group at the Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, South Carolina. "They can live pretty much anywhere, eat pretty much anything, they don't have enough predators and they reproduce faster than any other mammal."

They seldom appear in the daytime making them hard to count, but Mayer estimates there are 5.5 million feral pigs nationwide. There could be up to 8 million, up from a maximum 2 million in 1990, he said.

Florida to call on Labrador retrievers to stem Giant Snail invasion
By Kevin Gray | Reuters – Thu, Aug 29, 2013

By Kevin Gray

MIAMI (Reuters) - Florida officials trying to eradicate the Giant African Land Snail, one of the world's most destructive invasive species, plan to deploy a new weapon in the battle - Labrador retrievers.

State agriculture authorities say they hope the dogs will add to their success in fighting an infestation of the slimy snails, which were first spotted by a homeowner nearly two years ago and quickly swept through the Miami area.

On Wednesday, officials said that since the start of an aggressive extermination campaign they have collected 128,000 of the snails, which can grow as big as rats and devour plants as well as stucco and plaster in a hunt for calcium they need to grow their big shells. In large numbers, the snails can cause extensive structural damage to buildings.

"We see a lot of strange things in Florida and this one makes the top of the list," said Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. "It is a very serious pest."

Putnam said $6 million has been spent so far to eradicate the munching mollusks, which may have been introduced to Florida by a Miami Santeria group, a religion with West African and Caribbean roots that was found in 2012 to be using the snails in its rituals.

The snails can carry a parasitic rat lungworm that can cause illness in humans, including a form of meningitis, although no such cases have been identified in the United States.

To stamp out the snails, a team of 45 people regularly fans out across Miami, sometimes using rakes and getting down on their hands and knees to hunt for them.

The snail fighters are also using bait, chemical treatments and experimental traps to root out the mollusks, helped by phone calls from local residents who report sightings.

Joining them soon will be canine detectors, including a Labrador retriever being trained to sniff out the snails.

"They're very good at detecting the Giant African Land Snail," said Richard Gaskalla, the head of plant industry at the Florida Agriculture Department. "So we're building four-legged technology into this program as quickly as we can."

The Giant African Land Snail has no natural predator, posing a challenge to eradication efforts. But it can give off a strong odor that dogs can be trained to detect.

Officials showed off a black Lab named Bear who is expected to soon wrap up his three-month training and start accompanying the snail hunters. Two other Labradors are also expected to be trained, they said.

Officials say they believe they have contained the snails to the Miami area.

Gaskalla said the program was showing success, with a sharp drop in numbers found.

"The number of detections this last year were in the thousands; now they are down to around 200 to 300 a week," he said.

[letter i got]

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24751208

2. A population of Canada geese used to live between the two runways at Salt Lake City. Not any more, says Gib Rokich, who oversees the airport's wildlife programme, due to a system of egg addling. "The goose is scared from the nest and the eggs are addled or oiled pretty much in place by picking each egg up individually and shaking them or submerging them in vegetable oil. The goose continues to sit on them but they never have a successful hatch. If she lays 10 goslings, and five survive into adulthood, then they will want to come back to the same location to nest, so you can see how it can multiply. After four years, we broke the cycle, so we still get the occasional one but they're not established any more."

Why should successful Germans emulate the folly of the failed American politicians responsible for the decline of the greatest republic in the history of mankind?

http://www.vdare.com/articles/memo-t...to-take-a-hike

Decline? Memo to Pat: Repeat, the republic is Dead

But the regime still has helicopters. And coincidentally since I live very close to an airport, one flew directly over my trailer this morning, slow and low to the point I googled the rotor sound and saw this link: http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question57041.html

I never was any good at physics but the rotor sound level this morning set a new record here at the Shire. I confess to not being sure whether the sound barrier was being broken but the sound level was very very loud.

Okay boys, stick with me here. There are no 'terrorists' in America if you exclude blacks killing white people on a regular basis. I know this because the former director of the NSA told me so. BUT the current NSA seems to have a different take on the matter and they have got lots and lots and lots of resources and they appear to be using them on lots and lots of people. Question: How does the regime react when it sees communications from America going to Russia and China?

Mr. Brimelow, would you be so kind as to send an email to Ruslan and Mr. Rogers and report back to us as to whether you experience any low and direct helicopter flyovers? :-)

The answer will determine the future of the American Right—and of the historic American nation.

http://www.vdare.com/articles/econom...end-white-base

Mr. Kirkpatrick, the so-called historic American nation is synonymous with republic. Repeat, it's dead. But at least you are writing about something to replace the Republican Party. The one essential concept that you omitted is that the Jews will be behind every group/party dissenting for 'a campaign to restore conservative and family values in America,' as the general would say. They will have infiltrated it. If you were a true radical you would cut to the chase and start advocating a Pro-White Anti-Zionist Party. Otherwise it's just more BS. More treason, Mr. Kirkpatrick.

Disclaimer: I am no leader. Please don't take seriously anything I say. I write for merely entertainment purposes.

10,000 Russian Nationalists March in Moscow against Nonwhite Invasion
Posted by TNO Staff— on November 5, 2013

At least 10,000 Russian nationalists took to the streets of Moscow yesterday to participate in the annual “Russian March” in that city.

Marchers ranged in age from young children to elderly men and women. According to reports, they chanted “Russia for Russians; Moscow for Moscovites” and about 80 participants were detained at one of the marches in the Moscow neighborhood of Lyublino.

Banners and placards blamed nonwhite invaders for pushing up the crime rate and undermining the Russian economy.

“Why are there foreigners in our cities? This is our home,” said a young woman on the march who identified herself only as Nadezhda.

Another man with a young child on his shoulders said simply: “We are all Russians here. Kids have nothing to be afraid of.”

The demonstration took place in the same region on the city’s outskirts that saw riots break out three weeks ago over a deadly stabbing blamed on a nonwhite from Azerbaijan.

Then, a crowd of thousands attacked central Asian stallholders and other obvious nonwhites in the city, provoking a major clash with the police.

A UN report in September said Russia has about 11 million migrants. Russia is visa-free for all Central Asian republics, so most of the migrant workers are in Russia legally.

Nationalist demonstrators carry a banner reading: “We demand the start of the visa regime with Caucasus and Central Asia.”

Nationalist demonstrators carry banners reading: “Russians and Russian power to Russia.”

Nationalist demonstrators carry a banner reading: “Today a Mosque — tomorrow Jihad.”

Default Invasive grass known as medusahead discovered in Montana

Posted: Dec 27, 2013 2:39 PM by MSU News Service

BOZEMAN - Scientists with Montana State University have confirmed the presence of the invasive grass medusahead on the Flathead Indian Reservation in southeastern Sanders County, a first in Montana.

Also known as medusahead wildrye, the invasive plant was discovered in mid-November by Bryce Christiaens, weed coordinator for Missoula County. Chistiaens then sent a sample of the plant to MSU to verify the find.

Medusahead is listed as a noxious weed in California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Utah. Like another troublesome annual grass, cheatgrass, medusahead initiates growth early in the growing season, reducing moisture for perennial grass species. Once it dominates a site, the land has limited value for livestock or wildlife. It is unpalatable based on the high silica content and the seed head contains stiff awns, or bristles, that can injure eyes and mouths of grazing animals.

MSU botanist Matt Lavin said he has seen plenty of medusahead in southwest Idaho in open range country even with no recent burn history, where it's common on southwest-facing rangeland and often grows alongside rush skeletonweed. While he has long suspected it occurs in Montana, this is the first time MSU has a physical sample to study.

Response efforts are underway, said Doug Dupuis, range specialist for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

"We're in the early stages of developing a plan and will work with Tribal specialists, counties, Montana State University and adjacent landowners to evaluate options and implement management to control and potentially eradicate this new invader," Dupuis said.

Dupuis said Partners for Regional Invasive Species Management, a program that has been addressing invasive weeds in Lake County and Sanders County on the National Bison Range, will be an invaluable tool as they move forward. Preliminary efforts will involve surveying the area to estimate the total area infested and drafting a long-term management strategy.

Jane Mangold, a rangeland weed specialist with MSU Extension and assistant professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, said it is important to be aware of what this grass looks like so infestations can be detected and addressed when they are still small and manageable. Educational material will be developed to assist with identification and management of medusahead.

From Wyoming Wildlife, November 1998:

Quote:
Called "exotics," these plants, birds, mammals, aquatic creatures, even diseases, are slowly spreading across Wyoming and the West with a disastrous result. ... In the case of some trees, like tamarisk, a Eurasian native, the war might already have b een lost in the battle against a species that not only monopolizes nearby water sources with deep tap roots but also damages the soil by exuding salt.

"It just takes over, " Reg Rothwell, chief of biological services for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, says of the tree also known as "salt cedar."

"It's so aggressive that it crowds out other species, and that's kind of what's happening with Russian olive. Russian olive origianlly was felt to be a pretty valuable wildlife plant. It still has value, but when you're looking at maintaining diverse plant communities, that's really where the predominant danger comes from. Just like with cheat grass (another import). Nothing else has a chance. Cheat grass, it greens up early and forms a fairly dense stand and nothing else can compete for space and nutrients."

Russian olive, fears Rothwell, eventually is "going to take over as the predominant woody species and will really have a profound influence on understory plants."

[same WW article]

Quote:
"officials think an angler, determined to pull something big out of Yellowstone Lake, a decade or more ago tossed in some non-native lake trout. Unfortunately, those voracious eaters now threaten the lake's native, and much smaller, Yellowstone cutthroat population. As for tamarisk, it came along in the 1800s with settlers who wanted more trees for fuel and shelter. Russian olive trees, meanwhile, arrived in the West as an ornamental. ...

Purple loosestrife, a colorful wetlands perennial that reached New England from Europe in the early 1800s as an ornamental, is blamed for overrunning both native vegetation and open water habitat. On rangelands, leafy spurge, another Eurasian native, is thought capable of cutting the productivity of grazing lands by three-quarters as it displaces native grasses.

You can find exotics overhead, too, in the shape of English sparrows and starlings that are booming in numbers. They live year-round in Wyoming and are hard on native bird species that migrate back and forth with the seasons becase they take over the prime nesting spots.

"Starlings and English sparrows are very aggressive, by comparison, to a lot of native birds," says Rothwell. "So even if a (native) bird does get a foothold, the starlings and English sparrows will hassle them until they leave and then take over."
