Anti-Russia allegations over the МН17 case in the Dutch media

20 March 2020 - 09:44

On March 5, the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant ran a story titled “Russian manipulation and sabotage in the MH17 case,” which claims that Russia did everything in its power to hinder the investigation of the plane crash.

Huib Modderkolk and Tom Kreling, who contributed many other anti-Russia reports in the past, claim this time that Russia tried to directly influence members of the investigation team. In particular, Russian intelligence agents were allegedly involved in incidents with investigation experts, such as surveillance, theft of databases, telephone tapping and hacking attacks.

Modderkolk and Kreling cite anonymous sources in the Dutch intelligence services and the Joint Investigation Team in the spirit of Western media “spy scandals.” Lacking reliable facts, they refer to sources whose reliability cannot be verified, as well as to the infamous Bellingcat investigation resource, which has fuelled many scandals by posting fake news, including about the MH17 case, and is known to be politically biased against Russia.

We consider their latest contribution as yet another attempt to divert attention from serious discrepancies in the presumably only possible version based on “the Russian connection” in the tragedy.

The report published by Volkskrant, which is known to have close ties with the Dutch political elites, is part of a disinformation campaign against Russia that has been lately gathering momentum in the Dutch media. It appears that its initiators are trying to influence the outcome of the MH17 trial, which began at the District Court of The Hague on March 9.

Publications in Arab media regarding Russian nationals’ involvement in the military operations in Libya

27 April 2020 - 09:19

On April 12, 2020, citing an “informed” source inside Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), several Arab media outlets reported that a headquarters of a “Russian” private military company, Wagner, which allegedly had been fighting on the side of Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army, was destroyed on April 10, 2020, near Salah al-Din.

We would like to point out that currently there is not a single Russian serviceman in the area of the military conflict in Libya. The Foreign Ministry has not received any reliable data on any Russian nationals who participated in the hostilities on the Libyan territory and were killed on said dates.

The above-mentioned reports are not nearly the first speculation on the issue of “Russian” private military companies’ participation in the intra-Libyan conflict. These planted reports are aimed at creating a misconception that Moscow is allegedly interfering in the domestic Libyan armed conflict by openly siding with one of the parties to the conflict. In fact, Russia is doing all it can to facilitate a ceasefire and a political settlement of the Libyan crisis. We have never demonstrated any intention to support either of the parties to the conflict.

Repatriation of Russian citizens from Israel

27 April 2020 - 14:29

We took note of an article published on April 26 on the Radio Liberty website about Russian citizens that found themselves in a predicament in Israel. They came to Israel for planned medical treatment (surgery and chemotherapy) for their children.

We were not surprised by the article’s details about Russian citizens and their emotional statements. They are mothers who want to return home with their children as soon as possible. What is strange is that the authors of the article did not report that on April 24 it was announced that an Aeroflot flight on April 28 was supposed to bring Russian citizens home from Israel.

So, neither the Russian Embassy in Israel, nor the Russian leaders forgot about their compatriots. We would be happy to tell the authors about this and much more if they would only inquire.

At present, the Russian Embassy knows about some 70 Russian nationals that came to Israel for medical treatment. This number includes the people accompanying the patients.

As for Angelina, Renat and Irina, who were mentioned in the article and who are in Israel together with their children that underwent or are undergoing medical treatment in Israel, the Embassy began to resolve their problems with cancelled flights as soon as it learned about them. As the article explains, one family was put in a hotel in Netanya at the expense of sponsors. Another family cannot stay in the hotel we suggested because there is no kitchen but it is in constant contact with an Embassy employee that helps resolve all problems as they arise. Regrettably, the third Russian citizen mentioned in the publication couldn’t use the transport and hotel accommodation offered by the Embassy because the doctor would not clear her to leave the premises for medical reasons.

We would like to note that apart from the aforementioned Russian citizens in Israel for medical treatment, we know about another 300 Russians that arrived in Israel for different reasons (family, work, study and the like). Some of them have no money or accommodation. Far from all of them fall under the Government’s resolutions 433 of April 3, 2020 and 370 of May 31, 2010. The Embassy is doing all it can to arrange support from sponsors and to collect personal contributions to help them out.

At about 11 pm on April 24, the official Telegram channel for government services announced that on April 28 an Aeroflot plane will make a special flight at 3 pm to bring Russian citizens home. The preliminary passenger information only included residents of Moscow, the Moscow Region, St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. Nevertheless, using its authority, the Embassy is trying to get as many passengers on this flight as possible. This primarily applies to those compatriots that have to leave Israel as soon as possible.

The Embassy would like to draw your attention to the fact that the 90 day visa-free term is expiring for some Russian citizens. The Embassy requested that the Israeli consular authorities automatically extend the stay of Russian citizens until their departure from Israel. There has been no official reply yet but our Israeli partners are saying that this issue will be resolved for citizens of all countries with which Israel has visa-free agreements, including Russia.

Anti-Russia allegations by The New York Times and the Financial Times on countering the new coronavirus infection

13 May 2020 - 17:01

We have noted a number of publications in the Western media, in part, The New York Times and the Financial Times, on the Russian Government’s alleged minimising of the number of deaths from the new coronavirus infection.

We will not dwell on the amazing synchrony and similarity of these articles. This conformity of ideas in independent English language publications has long ceased to be a surprise.

That said, it is stunning that they have completely ignored the basics of professional journalism: this “news tribe” working at influential publications did not even bother to give their Russian colleagues an opportunity to respond. Once again we see how easily this anti-Russia house of cards falls apart under the scrutiny of the basic facts.

In the context of these unfounded allegations, we would like to point out to these foreign journalists the May 12 comment by Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova. She bluntly refuted any assertion that official statistics might be subject to manipulation. All the facts, including the number of fatalities, are published regularly and are publicly available. The final figures for April will be published as usual at the end of the next accounting month (May). Meanwhile, the Government provides status updates. According to this information, the mortality rate from the coronavirus infection in Russia is several times lower than the average global figures.

Obviously, the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 disease it causes are a new challenge for all of humanity. Doctors and researchers all over the world have been meticulously studying this and working on dozens of vaccines for many months now. However, even the best specialists do not have the answers to many questions so far. Only the all-knowing journalists at The New York Times and the Financial Times can, apparently, declare verdicts at will. This is symptomatic.

We regret that these publications did not bother to learn the facts. Even against the backdrop of a grave situation at home, they did not write a word about the unprecedented work being done by Russia on increasing the functional ability of the healthcare system to respond to the new threat of the coronavirus infection.

In this case, it wouldn’t be necessary to explain, even at an elementary level, that as distinct from many other countries, and even with a comparable number of infected people, six weeks ago Russia was far ahead of them in almost every critical figure (the number of medical personnel, specially equipped hospital beds, lung ventilators and ECMO machines). We would like to draw the attention of the esteemed journalists from the Financial Times to a comparison of the preparedness of the Russian and British healthcare systems based on the facts.

The above numbers are based on information from the Russian Federation Health Ministry, NHS England, NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, NSC, OECD and other open sources.

The main point is that Russia managed to avoid chaos and disorder and use the precious time we gained from early self-isolation for the further buildup of our medical capacities, the opening of new hospitals, and the purchase and manufacture of the necessary equipment.

Instead of attentively and openly analysing reality, in part, studying the Russian experience, the journalists at some Western publications made an awkward, politically engaged attempt, to shift public attention from domestic troubles to yet another sensational anti-Russia fake news item.

Meanwhile, it might be worth listening to what Director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci said recently. He testified during hearings in the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions that the real figures on the victims of the new coronavirus may be higher than official statistics in the US, not in Russia.

We would like to advise The New York Times and the Financial Times to be more serious about the facts and the verification of their own articles. Maybe, this would help them save their reputation, which has been spoiled by an endless number of unfounded reports in recent years.

Anti-Russia speculations regarding Libya in Maltese media

11 June 2020 - 14:17

On June 2, 2020 (on June 3 published on the website) The Times of Malta published an item titled “Malta refuses to release Libyan currency to Russia,” which sounds as if it has been copy-pasted from a recent statement by the US Department of State.

Washington’s allegations on this subject were thoroughly exposed in the Foreign Ministry’s press release on the seizure of Libyan currency in Malta (https://www.mid.ru/web/guest/maps/us...nguageId=en_GB) published on May 30, 2020. It is regrettable that The Times of Malta reporters have not checked their facts. Their professional conduct cannot be said to be based on due diligence or other basic principles of journalism.

We would like to remind everyone that a contract to print Libyan dinars was signed between Goznak and the governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) in 2015 and approved by the Libyan parliament, the House of Representatives. On May 26, 2016, it was also approved by the internationally recognised Government of National Accord in Tripoli, as shown in the 2019 report submitted by experts of the UN Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya.

It is an established fact that the dinars printed under the contract in Russia have been used all over Libya, both in its eastern and western regions. They have been printed and delivered to Libya to make up for the shortage of cash there and to improve the Libyans’ solvency, thereby alleviating human suffering.

It should also be pointed out that the 2015 contract with Goznak was signed by Mr Ali M. Elherbi, currently Deputy Governor and member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Libya in Tripoli.

The above shows that the ballyhoo over the contract with Goznak was orchestrated within the framework of an anti-Russia campaign, which is aimed, in part, at accusing Russia of destructive interference in Libyan affairs and at blaming us for the current instability in Libya.

Such planted fake news is only aggravating differences between the sides in the Libyan conflict and undermining the efforts of the international community to resume peace negotiations.

Once more, we have to conclude that the Maltese media are again trying to promote a negative image of Russia, and that in doing so they are using the tried and tested anti-Russia methods of their “senior colleagues” at the leading Western publications.

Why is it no surprise that the latest portion of fake news has appeared just in time for the announcement of a new initiative for an immediate ceasefire and a political settlement in Libya, made by President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in the presence of President of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh and commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar?

New round of spy mania in the American media

31 July 2020 - 10:41

On July 29, 2020, several American media outlets, including such presumably respectable ones as the Associated Press and the New York Times, reported that Russian intelligence services are allegedly using English-language sites to spread disinformation about the coronavirus epidemic in the United States.

We have noticed that the unsubstantiated claims about the alleged connection of some of these sites, namely InfoRos.ru, Infobrics.org and OneWorld.press, with the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, cite “US government officials” who spoke “on condition of anonymity” and a certain classified report, which is patently unverifiable information. It is notable that this simple method, this American know-how is being widely used in the Western media. Reporters and the authors of the concept of “Russian interference in everything” feel free to publish anything they want without providing any facts or proof, even if not quite reliable. This looks like the American version of Britain’s “highly likely” allegations, which was recently replaced with “almost certainly.”

One of their arguments is that between late May and early July these “bullhorns of the Russian intelligence services” have published “about 150 articles about the pandemic response, including coverage aimed either at propping up Russia or denigrating the US.” It is notable that any publications that express opinions unsuitable to media magnates are sharply criticised and immediately connected to Russian intelligence services.

Statements about Russia’s alleged “ongoing and persistent effort to advance false narratives and cause confusion” sound especially cynical amid the internal political situation and the accelerating presidential race in the United States. We have no doubt that the notorious “Russian card” will now be played often and without reason.

By the way, InfoRos.ru has published a refutation of its alleged connection with Russian intelligence services:

Moreover, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official spokeswoman has more than once commented on the so-called infodemic. We encourage our audience to read her latest statement, which is available at:

“Sensational investigations” by Estonian media prior to the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Summer Olympics

10 August 2020 - 14:15

The Estonian media have published a series of far-fetched “sensational” stories in the run-up to the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Summer Olympics and the regatta in Tallinn as part of it. They aim to discredit the historical event, no matter what, and its large-scale positive effect for the development of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic’s economy and infrastructure and for boosting its popularity as a major tourist destination. By the way, the Estonian state continues to derive substantial profits from its thriving tourist industry.

During the oppressive silence of Estonian officials regarding the anniversary, local media outlets have launched a campaign which is obviously coordinated from above and which aims to slander this Baltic republic’s Soviet-era history. Estonian journalists, drawing inspiration from a standard textbook, recalled the decision of the United States and its satellite states to boycott the 1980 Olympics, certain “excessive” security measures, allegedly substandard construction projects and the Soviet Union’s “all-out unpreparedness” for the Olympics. However, they overlooked the Olympic regatta that became a grandiose sport holiday for all Estonian residents.

The July 19 publication in the newspaper Eesti Paevaleht under the grabbing headline Scary Estonian Terrorists, the Urine of Young Pioneers and a Pole’s Gesture towards the Russians: The Untold Story of the Moscow Olympics became the climax of this information war.

Written by journalist Jan Martinson, the story contains a spicy cocktail of traumatic recollections and needs to be quoted at least partially so as to highlight the entire scale of this clinical situation.

According to Mr Martinson, most fans in the grandstands were allegedly KGB agents and police officers. “KGB agents, not to mention undercover operatives mixing with the public, sat in the first row during track-and-field competitions. All of them wore navy blue clothes and peaked caps with the inscription Baltic Regatta. During the competitions, each ‘sport enthusiast’ got dressed and watched a specifc section of the opposite grandstand, trying to detect a potential terrorist attack.”

“The country’s medical personnel developed an advanced doping system, so as to demonstrate the superiority of Soviet athletes. The Soviet Army’s research laboratories were involved in the process. At the same time, they wanted the Moscow Olympics to be the ‘cleanest’ in history and had to tamper with doping tests.”

The Eesti Paevaleht journalist discloses shocking details of how Soviet authorities tampered with doping tests. “To preserve ‘clean’ samples, they collected substantial amounts of urine prior to the Games. People said behind the scenes that Young Pioneers relaxing at the famous Artek Pioneer Camp contributed most of the yellow liquid. KGB vehicles delivered ‘clean’ urine to the laboratory whenever necessary. Once there, the doping-positive liquid was exchanged for doping-negative samples.”

What are the real facts? It appears that the Eesti Paevaleht editorial office has heard nothing about them. In that case, we regret that Jan Martinson failed to get into the sanctum sanctorum of the Soviet doping project and to provide more convincing “restroom evidence.”

The journalist’s narrative of how stadium workers opened the gate, so as to generate a fair wind for Soviet javelin and discus throwers, pales somewhat against the backdrop of these shocking revelations. Let’s explain this by the fact that his recollections are rather vague, and that the writer had to keep the dreadful truth about the Olympics secret for a whole 40 years.

Let’s try and refresh the selective memory of Estonian journalists with some testimony about how the Estonian SSR and Tallinn itself turned into a European city and tourist centre with the Soviet Government’s large-scale financial and organisational support. Over 50 (sic!) sport and other facilities, including roads, an airport, the main post office and several hotels, were built within a short time. The Tallinn cityscape changed considerably following the construction of such landmarks as Hotel Olympia, City Hall and the famous Tallinn Television Tower. Tallinn received about 200 million roubles for these and other Olympic projects from the Soviet Government. That was a substantial sum, considering the prices of that period. The work involved over 20,000 builders and 200,000 volunteers.

The meticulously restored historical section of Old Tallinn placed the capital of the Estonian SSR on an equal footing with popular Western European tourist destinations. Thanks to the 1980 Olympics, Tallinn joined an elite club of cities that have hosted Olympic competitions. The 1980 Olympics spurred the development of entire Estonian economic sectors that continue to provide a substantial part of national budget revenues. This includes tourism, the service sector, transport, light industry and the food industry.

We are surprised that we have to remind Estonian journalists about this literally “hard evidence” that they see daily from their office windows but which they stubbornly prefer to overlook.

On Anti-Russian Article by the Times of Malta regarding the situation around blogger Alexey Navalny

13 October 2020 - 11:52

We have certainly taken note of the editorial in the “Times of Malta” published on Septebmer 28, 2020 calling for additional sanctions against Russia with referrence to Alexey Navalny’s team allegations that “he was poisoned on the orders of President Vladimir Putin”. The same editorial also stated that the tests in Germany, France and Sweden have established that Navalny was poisoned with a chemical agent from a “Novichok” group.

It is quite possible that being highly politicized and financially dependent the editor and his prejudice prevent him from being objective and perceiving Russia as a “normal country”. On the other hand, no one disputes that each country has its own laws which must be respected.

In fact, the true state of affaires is quite different from that described in the article. Since Navalny’s shifting to Germany there have been many allegations against Russia. Apparently no evidence will be submitted, just like in Skripal case.

Russia cannot properly investigate the alleged poisoning of Alexey Navalny if it does not have clear answers on its requests to Berlin and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. There has been no response to the inquiries of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, which have been addressed to the authorities in Sweden and France. In violation of the universally recognised rules of criminal procedure, the Germans sent samples for testing in their laboratories.

The Russian Federation has been acting in the most transparent manner in the situation around Alexey Navalny from the very beginning. At the request of relatives, he was promptly granted permission to travel to Germany for medical treatment, which he did without hindrance, once the doctors at the Omsk hospital managed to stabilize his condition. Even though the Russian doctors have not found any trace of poison in the Navalny’s blood, they did not refuse to pass on to their German colleagues the data they had collected on the patient's health condition and were ready to continue to work together for the sake of his speedy recovery. Such behaviour would not be logical if Navalvy was actually poisoned on the instructions of the Russian authorities.

Germany's actions were so well-coordinated that a lot of questions started to surface about whether we are dealing with another staged mystical use of chemical weapons, though now not in Syria and the UK, but in Russia. A number of facts lead to such thoughts, namely: the immediate involvement at the highest level with requests to expeditiously take the blogger to Germany for treatment; the presence of Bundeswehr representatives and specialized vehicles of the German Ministry of Defense during his transportation; involvement in the situation of the top military and political leadership, declaring that the aforementioned «patient» was their «guest». All these organizational issues seem to have been part of a plan to politicize this incident with the clear aim of accusing Russia of violating the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The detection and identification by the laboratories of Germany, France and Sweden of highly toxic chemicals, called «Novichok» in the West, is the evidence in itself that they have long been well-known, studied and produced on high-end technological equipment in a number of NATO and EU countries. In some of them, for example in the US, patents were issued for the military use of this group of chemicals, which is very telling by itself, as well as in the context of the situation around A.Navalny. In this connection, it is quite appropriate to remind that Russia neither develops nor produces chemical weapons anymore as the last chemical round was destroyed in 2017, which was certified by the OPCW.

We agree that good relations between Russia and Europe are important. We also believe that any cooperation should be based on the “two-way street” principle. The language of sanctions will never contribute to the establishment of a constructive partnership and to the strengthening of trust and international stability.

We deeply regret, that the “Times of Malta”, caught in arrangement of facts and publication of fake news on several occasions, fail to respect journalistic ethics, which is harmful to russian-maltese relations.

Another attempt by Polish Politicians to rewrite WWII history

13 October 2020 - 11:55

We have taken note of an article published on September 24, 2020 by New Europe, an online newspaper close to the EU. Written by former President of Poland and member of Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Centre Supervisory Board Aleksander Kwasniewski, it discusses matters related to preserving historical memory in the context of the 79th anniversary of the mass shootings of Jews in Babi Yar.

In keeping with the Russophobic stereotypes common to the Polish political elite, the article abounds in insinuations against the USSR and attempts to intentionally distort facts. For example, in his description of this horrendous crime, Aleksander Kwasniewski claims that the Nazis murdered 34,000 Jews, thousands of the mentally ill, Roma, Ukrainians and people of other ethnic backgrounds, while failing to mention the shootings of Soviet prisoners of war. He also seems to “forget” that not only the Nazi occupation forces, but also their Ukrainian henchmen carried out this atrocity.

Aleksander Kwasniewski believes that the victims of this horrendous crime have yet to receive the tribute they deserve. The author explains this by decades of Soviet rule in Ukraine, alleging that the USSR “sought to erase Jewish suffering and indeed Jewish identity from the region’s historical narrative.” Attempts to cite Poland as a “model” in this regard are especially cynical. The former Polish President seems to forget how his compatriots treated Jews before the war, during the occupation of Poland and afterwards. He has also lost all memory of the stigma Warsaw had to bear in 2018, when Poland made it a criminal offence to accuse the Polish people of complicity in the Holocaust and had to scrap this bill after a storm of accusations by the US and Israel of complicity in Nazi German crimes.

We would also like to remind Aleksander Kwasniewski of the “care” with which the current Polish authorities treat the memory of the Soviet liberator soldiers who saved the world from fascism and stopped the crimes of the Holocaust.

We regret to note that the Polish political elites use all the means they can think of and even more to denigrate the USSR and drive a wedge between Russians and Ukrainians, while also revising some of the inglorious pages in the history of their own country.

An anti-Russian article in Le Monde

29 October 2020 - 12:19

Recently, the authoritative French newspaper Le Monde published an article outrageously titled “The Russian Consulate in Cameroon at the heart of a strange political and financial case.”

The title itself is misleading, since our diplomatic representation in the Republic of Cameroon is provided by the Russian Embassy in the country’s capital Yaoundé. There’s no such thing as a separate consulate office. Jean Marie Tchuissang, who is accused by the authors of financial fraud allegedly related to the case of Sergey Magnitsky, is, in fact, the Honorary Consul of Russia in Douala, the “economic capital” of Cameroon.

The greater part of the article covers the Hermitage Capital Management company’s activities related to Sergey Magnitsky. Clearly, the article is a put-up job aimed against Russia. It appears that in order to make the material look important, as well as to smear our country’s diplomatic successes and dynamically strengthening positions in Africa, the authors also decided to mention the British Armut Services LLP, allegedly involved in the case of Sergey Magnitsky, which wired the fee for consulting services in the amount of $2,000 to the account used by the Honorary Consul of Russia.

Jean Marie Tchuissang is engaged in business, including international trade, and provides consulting services to companies. He has been holding the post of Honorary Consul of Russia in Douala since 2004. He performs his functions in a qualified manner and in full, helps Russian citizens get around within this consular district, contributes to promoting bilateral economic relations, and receives and accompanies official and business delegations arriving in Cameroon. Jean Marie Tchuissang assists in resolving issues related to Russian ships’ entry to the port of Douala and promotes the Russian language, culture and education in Cameroon. Thanks to Jean Marie Tchuissang and his family (he is married to a Russian woman), an international school Galaxy (500 students) was opened in Douala and is the only school in that country focusing on the Russian language. The Honorary Consul helps Cameroon students enrol at Russian universities via the RACUS organisation on a commercial basis.

Jean Marie Tchuissang enjoys authority and commands respect with the Russian citizens residing in Cameroon. In 2009, he was awarded an anniversary badge “200th Anniversary of Russia’s Foreign Ministry Consular Service” and in 2012 he was awarded the Pushkin Medal for his contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage.

It is regrettable that such a renowned and respectable newspaper as Le Monde published this fake and an openly anti-Russia article, which was cobbled together in great haste and contains obvious factual mistakes and inconsistencies.

The Guardian about the incident with Alexey Navalny

30 October 2020 - 12:03

On October 16, 2020, The Guardian published an “exclusive” item explaining the “reasons” for the EU sanctions against Russian individuals and entities over the incident with Alexey Navalny. In particular, it claims that he was poisoned by “the FSB’s Second Service (SZKSiBT)” with a substance known in the West as nerve agent Novichok “to force him into exile.”

Using a traditional set of manipulations, the British newspaper cites two “anonymous sources” in the Western security services. It actually invites the readers to take this information at face value because neither the existence of these “sources” nor the reliability of their information can be verified. Moreover, these sources themselves admit that their “assertion is hard to test.” But The Guardian nevertheless regards it as “entirely plausible.”

The newspaper has also cited the official conclusions of the European Commission, according to which “it is reasonable to conclude that the poisoning was only possible with the involvement of the Federal Security Service,” because, first, Navalny had been put under surveillance by the FSB, and second, that the service allegedly has access to Novichok.

The European Commission’s speculative and unsubstantiated conclusions fit the general tone of the item. However, The Guardian has not reported that Russia destroyed all its chemical warfare agents and production equipment in full and ahead of time in 2017, in compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention and under international supervision.

Moreover, Russian representatives have pointed out on numerous occasions that the laboratories in Germany, France and Sweden, which claim that they had never synthesised Novichok, nevertheless quickly and unerringly found traces of Novichok in the samples taken from Navalny. This is clear proof that NATO and EU countries have long known about Novichok and had the necessary equipment for its synthesis and analysis. British journalists could find this subject interesting, but researching it would take them beyond the propaganda limits set in the Western mainstream media with regard to Russia.

The item published by The Guardian is yet another product of the never-ending anti-Russia campaign waged by biased British media outlets, which have abandoned professionalism and journalistic ethics out of opportunistic considerations.

Returning the Icon of St Nicholas the Wonderworker to Bosnia and Herzegovina

15 January 2021 - 16:33

We have noted media excitement about the issue of ownership of the icon of St Nicholas the Wonderworker that was presented to Sergey Lavrov by Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik during Mr Lavrov’s visit to Sarajevo on December 14-15, 2020.

Despite the fact that the Russian party returned the icon through diplomatic channels in order to clarify its provenance, Bosnian and Herzegovinian media and the media of some other countries continue to disseminate unsubstantiated speculation about the fate of the icon that casts aspersions on Russia. By spreading insinuations based only on the conjecture of their creators, the agenda-driven mass media are manipulating this story to settle political accounts within Bosnia and Herzegovina and to discredit our country in the eyes of their audience.

No proof that the previous owner illegally acquired the icon has been provided. Nevertheless, this episode has already become an object of cynical manipulation and foul play in the media arena. Rather than waiting for the official conclusion of competent agencies (the case was transferred to the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina), unscrupulous journalists create their own stories and pass them off as trustworthy information.

Unfortunately, we again note that some media, following the West’s beloved hobby of searching for Kremlin’s involvement in everything, are ready to use any, even the most inappropriate, pretext to whip up anti-Russia propaganda.

Australian media’s new anti-Russia campaign

18 January 2021 - 11:29

On December 29-30, 2020, Rupert Murdoch’s flagship newspaper The Australian published several items criticising national law enforcement and security authorities for their inability (!) to probe a suspected Russian mafia money-laundering operation in Australia. The newspaper has slammed the Australian Federal Police and financial intelligence agency Austrac for disregarding Bill Browder’s information about the Australian banks storing a cache of $3.47 million allegedly obtained as a result of illegal operations uncovered by Sergey Magnitsky.

The Australian journalists are outraged that 16 other countries have accepted the claims of the infamous financial expert, who is trying to make a career on Russophobia, at face value and seized the indicated accounts. The reporters reject the law enforcers’ arguments regarding the complexity of tracking financial transactions and legal ambiguities as unsubstantial. Instead of offering their own arguments, they are citing politicians, both from the ruling coalition and the opposition, who surprisingly unanimously demand that all resources be invested into investigating the “Russian mafia money laundering operation” and, of course, that an Australian analogue of the US Magnitsky Act be adopted as soon as possible.

We must give credit to the unintentional openness of the Australian journalists and politicians, who did not shirk from publicly stating their objective: to ensure the adoption of yet another anti-Russia law. By doing this, they have actually issued a political order to the country’s law enforcement authorities to reopen the investigation and this time to make sure that they find evidence supporting Bill Browder’s allegations, even if it doesn’t exist.

It is not surprising that The Australian prefers to forget about Browder’s own problems with the law. We would like to remind everyone that the Hermitage Capital’s founder has stolen billions of dollars in Russia, was involved in money machinations and tax avoidance, has been sentenced in two cases and has been the target of several other criminal investigations for grave offences. Only those who are politically bent on fuelling confrontation prefer to turn a blind eye to these facts. It is regrettable that Australian journalists and politicians refuse to accept this uncomfortable truth about Bill Browder.

A “sensational” report by Indian newspaper The Print

22 January 2021 - 15:27

On December 23, 2020, the Indian newspaper The Print published an article titled “India-Russia annual summit postponed for 1st time in two decades amid Moscow’s unease with Quad.” Quad, the Quadrilateral Security Council, is a format of interaction between Australia, India, the United States and Japan.

The people behind the publication were quite comfortable with the fact that just two days earlier, during a briefing with the participation of Russian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev, comprehensive assessments of the current state and prospects for Russia-India relations in bilateral and multilateral formats were provided. It was, in particular, emphasised that even though the COVID-19 pandemic had changed the schedule of contacts and delayed the annual summit, it had not become an obstacle to the strengthening of friendly ties between our countries.

During the event, members of the media were informed about the well-known position of Moscow: Russia welcomes the commitment of its Indian partners to the promotion of inclusive formats of regional cooperation as opposed to the division that a number of other countries are trying to impose, as they build their policies in the spirit of containment.

Notably, our colleagues in the Indian Foreign Ministry also drew attention to The Print’s “sensational” material, emphasising that in 2020, the summit, with the mutual agreement of the parties, had not taken place due to the pandemic, and insinuations of any other kind were invalid. The Indian Foreign Ministry noted separately that the spread of false information about important bilateral relations was “particularly irresponsible.”

The Print’s attempt to create a sensation from nothing failed and looked even more ludicrous and helpless amid dozens of other articles published following the briefing which described various aspects of Russian-Indian relations in a constructive and correct manner. We hope that The Print editors will draw the necessary conclusions and will from now on focus on facts, rather than flashy headlines aimed at attracting attention.

Dutch media misinformation on Russia’s anti-COVID efforts

2 March 2021 - 09:59

Western media continue to circulate anti-Russia publications aiming to discredit the country’s achievements in fighting the novel coronavirus infection.

This time, Dutch media outlets, namely, the Dutch Broadcast Foundation (NOS) website and the newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, have joined the misinformation campaign. Dutch journalists are trying to downplay the role of Russia helping pandemic-stricken countries. In their opinion, Moscow is using the Sputnik V vaccine as a means of self-advertisement and for expanding its political influence in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. Moreover, this country’s actions are incorrectly counter-posed to the promotion of China’s CoronaVac vaccine on the external markets. This looks like an attempt to drive a wedge between Russia and China.

At the same time, they are making peremptory statements about alleged vaccine shortages and claim that official Russian statistics overstate the number of vaccinated people. Moreover, they claim that Sputnik V is not very effective, citing dubious experts and little-known research centres.

Obviously, these publications, based on various speculations, aim to divert the Dutch public from the real problems that the country faces during the pandemic. Mass vaccinating is proceeding by fits and starts, and the Kingdom’s residents are reacting more harshly to official measures.

Those ordering such material should have learned long ago that it is impossible to defeat the pandemic in the Netherlands or anywhere else by whipping up media hysteria. The only possible way of coping with the disease is through joint efforts. The international community should unite in order to check the spread of the coronavirus infection, and all countries should coordinate their actions within the WHO and other international organisations. The politicisation of anti-infection efforts inevitably leads to opposite results. Misinformation is unacceptable in this case because it threatens the health and lives of millions of people.

On Four Corners’ production Putin's Patriots (ABC Australia)

10 March 2021 - 10:54

It is extremely unusual for the Australian media to feature someone who dissents against the mainstream view on Russia and dares to state it openly. Positive opinion on the Russian Government’s internal and foreign policy is predominant in Russia and is largely shared worldwide. However, the Australian public has little or no chance to know about it. So, it might seem a good idea for Four Corners to give the floor to President Putin sympathisers in Australia. If only the produсers had lived up to the professed standards of balanced and well-founded reporting.

Far from that, Four Corners brainwashes the audience with its own denigrating concept of today’s Russia. Those who don’t share it are portrayed as enemies involved in subversive Kremlin operations in Australia. Allegations regarding Russia’s hostile activities are supported by things like sinister music, videos of bikers in scary black outfits and footage of unidentifiable military personnel undergoing training. Not to forget the “analysts” who were free to articulate all kinds of meaningless banalities, provided they sounded appropriately alarming. Look, for instance, at that: “The fact of the matter is that Russia is aware of what's going on in Australia and certainly does not regard it as insignificant.” So what, for God’s sake?

Another topic Four Corners pretends to have investigated is “Russian money in Australia”. Mindful of a recent court decision penalising ABC for defamation the producers should know their assertions around the transparency and legality of Rusal investment in Australia are spurious. Rather pathetic are the attempts to give some credibility to the theory of massive Russian money laundering in Australia by simply reiterating terms such as “criminal” and “tainted” and thoughtfully talking about ”the tip of the iceberg”.

Ridiculous as it may seem, the episode still causes concern as a clearcut case of malignant propaganda targeting Russia but also undermining multiculturalism and freedom of expression in Australia.

Anti-Russian publication in NRC Handelsblad daily (Netherlands)

11.03.21 - 17:03

We noticed an article in a major Dutch daily newspaper, the NRC Handelsblad, published on February 15, 2021. As if on cue, local media outlets are once again churning out publications on Russia’s military activities in the Arctic. The Dutch are speculating on the topic of Russia building up its military capacity in the Arctic region whilst praising their Scandinavian partners for their readiness to withstand the mythical Russian aggression. It was stated that the “Scandinavian quartet” (Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland) is concerned with the challenge allegedly thrown down by Moscow. Quoting sources from the said countries, the media outlet reports that Norwegian Defence Minister Frank Bakke Jensen proposed signing a collective treaty with Sweden and Finland on defence cooperation in order to consolidate efforts for a strong retaliation against the Russian army.

So, what is happening in reality? Under the banner of “protecting security and legal interests,” NATO is seeking to strengthen its military presence and to contain Russia’s potential, including when it comes to developing the Arctic. This was expressly stated by senior officials of the alliance. The North Atlantic Alliance set eyes on the Arctic as an area for its long-term military plans and interests while the activities of the NATO member states in the Arctic region are increasingly becoming systemic and provocative thus transforming the Arctic into a ground of geopolitical competition.

In these circumstances, Russia’s efforts to reinforce its national security in the Arctic are obvious and understandable. We are drawing attention of our partners to the concerning expansion of NATO’s military activities in close proximity to the Russian borders. We have always stressed that we do not see any problems that would need a military solution in this region – and in Europe in general. We are fundamentally against confrontation and we support a constructive dialogue both in the bilateral format and between Russia and NATO. Russia has repeatedly sent the North Atlantic Alliance proposals with respect to normalising the situation, strengthening trust in this shared region, including proposals on moving military exercise grounds away from the “contact line” between Russia and the NATO countries.

The authors of this article could do with reviewing facts and Russia’s actual stance rather than spin doctors’ make-believe stories before they launched yet another spiral of anti-Russia hysteria.

Anti-Russia attacks on Sputnik V vaccine

29 April 2021 - 12:11

Russia's achievements in the fight against the new coronavirus infection have long been a thorn in the side of the adherents of anti-Russian rhetoric. Hence the unfounded information attacks against the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, unsupported by any facts. The purpose of such publications is to discredit the vaccine that enjoys the confidence of patients (evidenced by opinion polls) and to diminish the importance of Russia’s aid to countries affected by the pandemic.

This time, it is the European bureau of Politico, the US online publication. The article questions the growing attention to the Sputnik V vaccine among the international community, although the Russian vaccine has repeatedly proven its effectiveness. These journalists seem surprised by the natural popularity of publications and social media accounts dedicated to the Russian project and claim Moscow is using the vaccination topic “to promote Russia’s response to the pandemic” and enhance its regional and international political influence.

This article also replicates the idea that Russia is allegedly using mala fide information tools to compromise competitive vaccine offers, in particular, BioNTech / Pfizer.

There is no doubt that such unsubstantiated anti-Russia attacks are primarily targeting those who are unaware of the real situation. Publications in prestigious scientific journals, including the leading peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet, in which the vaccine developers have described the drug and the test results in minute detail, express no doubt about its quality.

Undeniably, interest in Sputnik V continues to grow both in Russia and abroad, including in Europe. To date, the vaccine has been approved for use in more than 60 countries, which is the second highest number of national registrations in the world.

Russia is cooperating intensively with WHO. The Russian vaccine is being manufactured at a number of foreign facilities. It is obvious that Russian coronavirus vaccines are largely seen by the international community as an irreplaceable contribution to the ongoing pandemic response effort.

In this regard, we would like to suggest that such writers stop speculating on the health of millions of people and playing political games, and refrain from artificially politicising this global problem in an attempt to earn dividends by peddling the anti-Russia narrative.
