These fucking people...they oscillate just unbelievably between laughably oversensitive and completely calloused.
LadySparrowUUrbanAchiever51L U All of this, thank you. This may be an "ethical" way to supply snake skins to the industry, but really it's just feeding into a completely unethical, mostly illegal market. How easy is it to slap "ethically-harvested Florida nuisance python" labels on your illegal, smuggled products? Yesterday 2:08pm Last edited by Alex Linder; March 12th, 2014 at 02:31 PM. |

One begins to realize that for a certain type, there will never be enough regulation. Indeed, the fundamental problems of this world all trace back to the taproot: not enough regulators. Not enough laws. Not enough safety posters. Not enough PSAs.

Biologists who study snakes often discuss how difficult it is to find our subjects in the wild. Knowing this, Michael Dorcas and J.D. Willson (two snake biologists) recently tried to figure out just how effective people could be at finding pythons. To do so, they placed 10 full-grown Burmese pythons in a 102 by 82 foot semi-natural enclosure containing vegetation, a small pond, and trees. Then, after the pythons had settled in, they allowed 19 people to come in one at a time and look for pythons for 30 minutes each. Although each of the 19 people could have potentially found all 10 snakes (a total of 190 potential finds), only two finds were recorded over the entire study. In other words, even when we are looking for snakes in a small area and know they are there, we probably only have about a 1 percent chance of seeing them.

Black Mamba
Just the ultimate reptilian terrorist....Doin' its part to control the nigmonkey population...
According to wildlife biologist Dr. Joe Wasilewski, black mambas are the most-advanced of all the snake species in the world. Their venom apparatus and method of delivering venom is also the most-effective and most-evolved among all venomous snakes.[11][12] One snake expert called this species "death incarnate".[13] Its combination of speed, unpredictable aggression, and potent venom make it an extremely dangerous species.[8][14] It is the fastest snake in the world,[15] capable of moving at 4.32 to 5.4 metres per second (11–19 km/h, 10–12 mph) for short distances. Without rapid and vigorous antivenom therapy, a bite from a black mamba is rapidly fatal 100% of the time Its body is long and slender and it's head, which readily stands out from the body, is said to be shaped like a coffin. Their eyes are large and they have excellent eyesight which is used to detect motion, to view surroundings, and to help them carefully navigate and move about in their environment. Detection of quick or sudden movements will cause them to strike immediately.

18-foot Burmese python found in Florida Everglades
MIAMI (Reuters) - Engineers in the Everglades stumbled upon a near-record-breaking Burmese python measuring more than 18 feet long during a routine inspection of levees on Tuesday, a water management district spokesman said. The snake, measuring at 18 feet 2 inches, fell short of the state record by 6 inches, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Last year, a snake collector in the state discovered the largest python on record there, measuring 18 feet 8 inches, commission spokeswoman Katie Johnson said. The pythons, which can grow to more than 20 feet in their native habitat in Southeast Asia, are one of the most problematic invaders of Florida's sprawling Everglades wetlands. They eat indigenous species and their food sources, fueling concerns that the predator snakes will fundamentally change the ecosystem. The python found on Tuesday was killed, and its corpse was taken to the University of Florida, where it will be measured and studied by scientists trying to combat the species, according to South Florida Water Management District spokesman Gabe Margasak. Officials have said the python population is believed to have grown to as many as 150,000 in the Everglades. The cold-blooded reptiles are often found atop levees, where they lie for hours at a time to warm up under the Florida sun. The snakes, one of the largest species in the world, found a home to their liking in the Everglades when pet owners started using the wetlands as a convenient dumping ground. http://news.yahoo.com/18-foot-burmes...175520804.html |

New Species of Blind Snake Discovered in Brazil
See more at: http://www.fearnet.com/news/news-art....O4jQ3PbU.dpuf
Back in November of 2011, engineers drained a hydroelectric dam in Brazil that spans a river connected to the Amazon, and discovered six particularly unusual looking snakes, at the bottom of the river-bed. With wrinkly flesh-colored skin and no eyes, immature folks like myself have had no choice but to dub the newly discovered creatures 'penis snakes,' but the scientific name is a bit less giggle-inducing; Atretochoana eiselti. - |

Rod Sommerville sank a cold beer after bite by deadly eastern brown
[visit link for the video]
http://www.couriermail.com.au/lifest...ign=engagement A QUEENSLAND man has reacted to a deadly snake bite in the most Australian way — by grabbing a cold beer from the fridge. Rod Sommerville, 54, thought he was going to “cark it” last month when he was nipped on the finger by an eastern brown snake while moving pot plants around his backyard. The Yeppoon man smacked the backyard dweller on the head with a shovel and called for an ambulance. Then he grabbed a XXXX Gold from the fridge and sat down, because “if you panic if you make it worse”, the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin reports. The newspaper reported that Mr Somerville did not wake his teenage son, who was snoozing on the couch, because he didn’t want to a cause a scene. “I said to myself, if I’m going to cark it I’m going to have a beer,” he told the newspaper. So I got a Goldie out of the fridge and drank that.” He was whisked to hospital for treatment but his ordeal spiralled further when he suffered an allergic reaction to the antivenom. “The reaction nearly killed me as well, so it was a double whammy,” he said. |

british paper describes tit-munching kingsnake as a gigantic beast. i had california kingsnakes, and they do not have fangs. ... well, it is the Daily Fail
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...red-duvet.html [to be fair, daily mail does a good job of getting the good stories, it just does a really shitty job of writing them up - misspellings, facts-that-aint, etc.] On the loose: The snake's owner Gareth Niven (pictured) said Hiss escaped from his tank six months ago. He thinks Hiss is likely to have been living in a derelict house that separates his and Ms Griffin's properties [just a great group of people, those british. bunch of fucking super-sized albino oompa-loompas, appoint the snake queen] Despite there being no risk to Ms Griffin as a result of the bite, kingsnakes are constrictors and the reptile may have killed her had it wrapped itself around her neck. [umm, yeah...unless she had like, uh, hands to pull it off] During a previous bid for freedom, he was on the loose in the neighbourhood for two years. [it is self-evident the average brit is less intelligent than a snake] Last edited by Alex Linder; March 12th, 2014 at 05:54 PM. |

Sea snake survives up to seven MONTHS without drinking despite living in the ocean
A three-year study of yellow-bellied sea snakes has revealed that they dehydrate themselves until quenching their thirst with fresh water rainfall The findings contradict the accepted belief that marine vertebrates have evolved to use salt water to meet their water requirements At sea, sips of fresh water depend on rainfall which is less dense than sea water and so floats on the surface - forming a 'lens' of fresh water Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...#ixzz2wz2F9yd2 Last edited by Alex Linder; March 25th, 2014 at 09:38 AM. |
