The British Army was still using Martini-Henry mark II breech loaders during the Zulu wars ... although they did not have enough prop M-H's to use in the movie, so not all the 'soldiers' are using them.

Default White to PC - Robinson Crusoe

One of the most remarkable film transformations in the service of political correctness that I've seen is that of Daniel Defoe's classic Robinson Crusoe. Here is what Wikipedia says about the ending of the book:
Crusoe (the family name corrupted from the German name "Kreutznaer") returns to England twenty-eight years after being shipwrecked on the island, and four years after rescuing Friday. Friday's father goes with a Spanish castaway to the mainland to retrieve fourteen other Spanish castaways, but Crusoe and Friday depart the island before they return. Friday accompanies Crusoe home to England, and is his companion in the sequel The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, in which Friday is killed in a sea battle.

On the way to the mainland once again from Crusoe's island, the ship is attacked by the cannibals. Friday dies from three arrow shots during an attempt to negotiate, but the crew eventually wins the encounter without further serious casualty.
In shocking contrast is the ending of the 1997 Pierce Brosnan version, in which Friday takes a wounded Crusoe to his home tribe for medical treatment; his tribe thinks Crusoe is one of the slave traders (Friday: 'take many young men for slave, take my son.") Crusoe commiserates. Why do they help me? Friday: "Sick man; no good to kill sick man; bad manner." Later the tribe demands a to-the-death-combat: if Friday kills Crusoe, he can stay; if Crusoe kills Friday, he can go. Each despairs, "I cannot kill you!" Surrounded by shouting natives, Crusoe and Friday face and slowly approach each other across a high, narrow bridge made of four bamboo branches strung together, knife and hatchet in hand. Crusoe refuses; Friday insists "do it, I have nothing to live for, no family.". They approach (natives grow more agitated); they strike at each other, knife, hatchet, knife, hatchet, always missing; natives jumping up and down chanting; they're in a clinch, both knocked down; the kill is at hand; Crusoe's knife is pushing on Friday's throat; he wails "I can't do this!" he stumbles and falls, knife falls to the ground; arms outstretched, he prays, God welcome my soul to paradise if I am worthy; Friday approaches with hatchet, do it, do it, I can't -- raises hatchet in air as if to strike . . .

Friday has been shot in the back! It's White slave traders. Terrified, the natives flee; Friday slumps into Crusoe's arms. No grieving parent ever lamented with more anguish or cradled a dead beloved more heartrendingly than Brosnan's Crusoe cradles Friday. And so Crusoe will return to England with those who "killed his friend and ravaged his people and his family." The film ends with Crusoe saying for the rest of his days he will remember the man who gave him the greatest gift of all -- his life, when he'd all but lost it; on the screen we see the two facing each other in the forest, smiling, hands outstretched, shaking hands.

The 1954 Luis Bunuel version starring Dan O'Herlihy has an entirely different ending, one that is true to the book. It's available on dvd at Netflix. On this page there is a shortened three-part series (no talking, just music) that gives a clear picture of the film; Part three shows the ending, which completely lacks the mawkishness of the Brosnan Crusoe-Friday relationship..

Cast Away with Tom Hanks. He is a brilliant actor and the whole message of this movie is that a White man never gives up.

I love the ending: He is going to start a new life in Canada but when he gets some road directions from a pretty lady he happens to meet at a crossroad he drives in her direction instead. (I am not 100 % sure the movie shows this but at least it is implied).

Hell, I was half-expecting the horny bastard to do the nasty with Wilson, his coconut of a "companion", before the flick was over. Make a wig out out some palm leaves, a pearl necklace from a few oysters, lipstick out of ... er, never mind; just thinking/fantasizing out loud again.

Just kidding -- a good movie it was.

I can recall the date I first seen that film on the tube,January 4th,1969.It blew me away! I never get tired of watching it.Check out the background scene when he kills and eats the snake,to see a pickup truck drive by.The film is supposed to be set in the late19th century I beleave.The could NEVER make a decent remake of this film,just a classic.
