10/21/2015

One of two people under arrest in the fatal shooting of Sarah Ann Wierstad, a 24-year-old returning to her St. Paul home after working a double shift, got out of prison two years ago in connection with a murder.

Police arrested Michelle Lee Koester, 42, of Minneapolis and Alvin Rudolph Bell Jr., 24, of St. Paul, on suspicion of murder Tuesday night. Wierstad, a single mother described as hard-working and devoted to her 5-year-old daughter, was killed in her Railroad Island neighborhood Sunday night.

Default Judge denies bail for 1988 Portland cold case murder suspect

Oct 22, 2015

PORTLAND, OR -The man charged with killing an aspiring actress in Portland in 1988 will remain in the Multnomah County Jail.

Multnomah County Judge Kelly Skye denied bail for Walter Wayne Howard on Thursday morning, concluding the evidence in the case is strong enough to keep him behind bars while awaiting trial.

Howard, now 60 years old, is charged with the murder of Renee Harvey, who had moved to Portland from Montana to pursue an acting career. She was a secretary for the Oregon Special Olympics.

The 25-year-old was found dead in her Buckman neighborhood apartment on Jan. 15, 1988, a few days after her apartment was burglarized.

Harvey believed her neighbor, Howard, had broken into her apartment.

The original investigators suspected Howard was involved in the murder, but did not have enough evidence to arrest him at the time

Default Man gets 20 years for robbery that led to fatal heart attack

October 23rd 2015

GREENWOOD, SC - A man has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after he stole a laptop from a 68-year-old Greenwood man who died of a heart attack during the struggle.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports a jury Thursday convicted 26-year-old Wayne Smith. He pleaded guilty Monday to strong armed robbery before his trial began.

Prosecutors say Smith went to Phillip Baer's apartment in July 2013 to collect a debt and tried to steal a laptop when Baer said he didn't have the money.

As the two struggled over the computer, Baer suffered a heart attack. Smith then drove away in the victim's truck.

Default 1 of 3 suspects receives 42 years in prison for killing homeless man

October 23, 2015

BLOOMINGTON — Willie Chambers' reluctance to leave the courtroom Friday after he was sentenced to 42 years in prison for murder was short-lived after four McLean County deputies wrestled him to the ground and removed him in handcuffs.

The 19-year-old man pleaded guilty in August to killing Ronald Smith, a homeless man, in O'Neil Park in June 2014. Two co-defendants, Anthony Davis-Dickson and Tory Washington are awaiting sentencing on murder charges.

Default Police: Suspect pushed 74-year-old woman into river

10/22/2015

The search for the suspect involved in an attempted robbery and carjacking in Gates continued on Thursday.

Police say the suspect attempted to rob a realty office on Chili Avenue Wednesday afternoon before fleeing to Sprucewood Lane and carjacking a woman. The Gates police chief says he then drove the woman into Rochester and ditched the car on the edge of the Genesee River.

Thursday, police said the suspect pushed the 74-year-old woman into the Genesee River after the carjacking -- and that she didn't just fall on her own.

The suspect is a black male about 5-feet-7-inches wearing a blue hoodie and black pants and carrying a black handgun. If you have information about this crime, you're asked to call 911.

Default Man convicted for 2006 murder sentenced to 60 years in prison

Oct 23, 2015

PEORIA — Calling the 2006 slaying of Robbin Underwood as “cold-blooded and callous” as he’s seen, a Peoria County judge on Friday sentenced one of the men involved to 60 years in prison.

Judge David Brown decried the March 16, 2006, shooting that left Underwood dead and her niece, Jennifer Lindler, seriously injured. Lindler had gone to the 1300 block of North Ellis Street to buy drugs from Micah Foreman when they were ambushed by Allen S. Fitzpatrick Jr. and several others who were in a rival gang.

Fitzpatrick, now 35, and others opened fire on Foreman, missed and then turned their attention to the women, who were unarmed. At least three weapons were fired at the women, who were trapped in a pickup truck.

Underwood died from a gunshot wound to the head. Lindler suffered several injuries to her legs, hips and body.

Default Tried three times, William “Tippy” Wallace faces fourth homicide trial

October 23, 2015

Tina Spalla may have been laid to rest 36 years ago, but the case of the man who was twice convicted of shooting her to death on a hot August afternoon in Canonsburg is still alive in Washington County Court.

After a 2007 ruling vacated his 1985 death penalty conviction the case remained dormant in Washington County Court, until a judge recently assigned William “Tippy” Wallace an attorney and set up a conference to discuss how to proceed.

Thirty years ago this fall, a Somerset County jury brought here to listen to testimony found Wallace guilty of murdering Canonsburg dry cleaner Carl Luisi, 63, and his young clerk, Spalla, in a robbery of Carl’s Cleaners, Adams Avenue, on Aug. 17, 1979. For fatally shooting Luisi, he received a life sentence on a second-degree murder conviction. For Tina Spalla’s first-degree murder, the jury gave Wallace a death sentence......

DALLAS — There's been a big break in the murder case of 18-year-old Zoe Hastings.

Police arrested Antonio Lamar Cochran early Saturday morning after detectives matched DNA found at the crime scene with a criminal database.

Cochran, 34, was apprehended at an apartment in Northwest Dallas. He was charged with capital murder. Bond was set at $1 million.

"He's obviously a sexual predator that's been taken off the streets, hopefully not to do this ever again," said Dallas police spokesman Maj. Max Geron.

Police said Cochran has a criminal felony record in Texarkana and Bowie County of offenses including theft and drug possession.
