Suspect Charged With Murder In Death Of Center City Doctor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Sources tell CBS Philly that a suspect has been officially charged with murder in the gruesome death of a Center City doctor.

Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Jason T. Smith of Levittown. Smith was charged with murder by police Thursday morning.

Smith was taken into police custody Wednesday evening at a residence in Levittown, Bucks County and was brought to Philadelphia police headquarters. He was questioned and later charged in the death of 35-year-old Dr. Melissa Ketunuti.

Sources tell CBS 3 reporter Walt Hunter that Smith confessed to the crime and sources say that Smith told investigators that he committed the crime because he felt like Ketunuti was disrespecting him and was making fun of him.

Smith was an exterminator who was called to Ketunuti’s residence to perform work.

Surveillance video from the victim’s neighborhood provided detectives with leads that ultimately led to the suspect being taken into custody.

Ketunuti worked as a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her body was found bound and burned by her dog walker in the basement of her Naudain Street apartment Monday afternoon (see related story).

Investigators say the cause of death was likely strangulation: a rope had been found around her neck. Investigators also say Ketunuti’s wrists and ankles were tied behind her back.

Homicide division Captain James Clark says Ketunuti’s body was found clad only in a shirt, although he does not believe she was sexually assaulted.

A reward of $35,000 was being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

Police executed a search warrant late Wednesday night on the suspect’s home along Crescent Lane in Levittown.

A Philadelphia police news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday to provide more details on the arrest.
