A large neo-Nazi gathering and a counter-protest was held this past Saturday in the town where the famed yeshiva of the "Chatam Sofer" once stood.

Several hundred neo-Nazi supporters gathered at a main square in Bratislava to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Slovakia’s Nazi-led puppet government. In reaction to the neo-Nazi rally, Slovakia, dozens of young people counter protested, the Slovak Spectator reported.

Most of the protestors were youths sporting shaved heads, and dressed in the black uniforms of fascist regimes. The members of the Czech National Resistance and a group of older protestors listened to speeches and shouted nationalistic slogans.

Ivan Sykora, the leader of the ultra-right Slovenska Pospolitost (SP), a group that was disbanded by Slovakia’s Interior Ministry in November, was the first to address the crowd. He praised Nazi-led Slovakia, saying that it was founded democratically.

The former leader of the SP, Marian Kotleba, greeted the crowd with the ‘Heil, Hitler’ salute, before being taken away by police, who arrested and detained him.

SP’s Sykora clarified that Kotleba was not taken away for his salute, but for his criticism of the government. However, Police Vice President Stanislav Jankovic told the TA3 television news network that the police decided to end the rally after demonstrators used the Nazi salute.

Riot police used force to disperse the crowds, and arrested six of the protestors. After the crowds cleared, remaining participants marched under police escort towards the symbolic grave of Jozef Tiso, the president of wartime Slovakia, who was an ally of Hitler.

From what I know Slovaks are not terribly fond of the Jews in question, despite the crap from the media preaching Holocau$t remembernce and other pro tolerance garbage. The older people are generally Jew wise, unfortunately the younger generation are totally oblivious to what is happening around them. Back in 2007 I took some happy snaps of a forgotten old Jewish cemetery, around 20km from Žilina, judging from its state the locals know not to hold back their true feelings about the Jews.

17-ročná študentka z Nitry propagovala extrémizmus

http://www.patriot.sk/2009/03/17-roc...us/#comment-37

V Kolíňanoch boli v nedeľu viaceré budovy a autobusové zastávky popísané extrémistickými nápismi a hákovými krížmi.

...According to the League of Human Rights Advocates (LHRA), a local human rights organization, on 3 July, in Záhorská Ves, Stefan and Olga Šarkozi, who are Roma and whose house had been burned down by a mob in December 2003, were preparing to build a small wooden hut on their land when the local mayor reportedly ordered them to leave the village immediately. The mayor later returned with four security guards who carried baseball bats and assaulted Stefan Šarkozi, members of his family and Marian Rehak. In the evening, the Šarkozis took refuge under a bridge. The mayor reportedly arrived in the night with security guards and again assaulted the family. As a result Stefan Šarkozi sustained a broken arm, his daughter Olga suffered injuries to the legs, his son Jozef injuries to the face and chest and his youngest daughter Adriana was thrown into river. The incidents were reported to the Malacky District Police Department and to the Ministry of the Interior in Bratislava, which reportedly initiated an investigation. In the evening of 19 August when the Šarkozi family attempted to place on their land a mobile house, provided by LHRA, the mayor reportedly organised a demonstration by villagers who wanted to expel the Šarkozi family from Záhorská Ves. The villagers prevented the placement of the mobile home and the mayor reportedly called Dr Columbus Igboanusi, LHRA director and a Nigerian national with permanent residence in Slovakia, a "nigger from Somalia"...

Slovakia gay rights parade attacked by skinheads

Albuquerque Express
Sunday 23rd May, 2010

People who paraded in the streets of Bratislava during the first Gay Pride parade in Slovakia were attacked by several skinheads on Saturday.

The gay rights supporters had gathered in the centre of Bratislava for the Rainbow Pride parade when some 80 skinheads began to hurl stones and smokebombs at the participants.

A large police presence was mostly unable to protect the more than one thousand marchers, even despite warnings that an attack was imminent.

Eight skinheads were eventually detained by police who asked for the event to finish halfway through.

Organisers said the event had been thwarted by “a bunch of morons.”

Gay pride parades face strong opposition in some eastern European countries.

Neonazi violence thwarts first Slovak gay parade
May 22, 2010, 20:12 GMT

Bratislava - Attacks by Neonazis on Saturday forced authorities to call off what would have been Slovakia's first-ever gay pride parade in Bratislava.

Right-wing extremists attacked the early gathering of gay marchers in a central city square with teargas and assaulted some of the participants verbally and physically.

Authorities then called off the planned march through the streets of central Bratislava, fearing further violence as the planned parade route was teeming with Neonazis. Police were worried that they could not guarantee the marchers' safety.

Television networks estimated the size of the gathering of gay and human rights activists at around 1,000.

It would have been Slovakia's first-ever so-called rainbow parade for gay rights.

Organisers said that despite the parade being thwarted, their festival 'Rainbow Pride Bratislava 2010' would continue through into Sunday morning with a series of concerts.

Prior to the planned parade, not only extreme rightists but also some Catholic groups had tried to prevent the event.

Virtually all leading politicians in the largely Catholic country have refrained from showing public approval of the parade ahead of Slovakia's upcoming parliamentary elections on June 12.

Jan Slota, head of the Slovak National Party which is a coalition partner in the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico, even said he would 'personally come in order to spit' at the gay parade. His comments had drawn only limited criticism by other politicians.

However, international diplomats and non-governmental organizations in Bratislava demonstrated their support for the event.

Among those who offered declarations of support were all Scandinavian and several Western European embassies, the representative of the EU Commission in Bratislava, as well as international non-governmental organizations in the city.

Most media in the country also reported positively ahead of the planned march. The organizers had announced the parade was intended 'not only as an event for gays and lesbians but for all people who support human rights and the idea of an open society.'

Slovakian town "to build wall toward Roma settlement"

Source: Tanjug

VRUTKI -- Authorities in a town in Slovakia have announced that they intend to build a two-meter high concrete wall in order to "separate" a Roma settlement.

The town of Vrutki will undertake the measure in order to respond to complaints received by the majority Slovakian population, according to reports.

They are said to feel "increasingly in danger" from their Roma (Gypsy) neighbors.

Mayor Miroslav Mazur told TA3 TV that police were "unable to cope with the problem", and that the Slovak neighborhood had become "target of night-time attacks".

Four council buildings in the Roma settlement officially have 212 residents, while unofficially the number is much higher.

Despite international condemnation, several Slovakian towns have already built walls and fences toward Roma settlements.

According to estimates, there are a quarter of a million Roma living in Slovakia.

Fire at Gothic Slovak Castle Casts Shadow Over Polls

March 10, 2012, 11:49 PM CE

By Leos Rousek
As Slovakia focuses on general elections, Krasna Horka, a monumental gothic castle in the eastern part of the euro-zone nation, burned down after allegedly catching fire from illegal burning of dry grass, officials said Saturday.

“For many this sad event at Krasna Horka has cast a huge shadow over today’s elections,” outgoing Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said in a live television interview commenting on exit polls of parliamentary elections.

The 14th-century national monument, whose name means “beautiful little hill,” towers over the village of Krasnohorske Podhradie near the eastern Slovak town of Roznava

Jewish groups laud Slovak premier’s Holocaust memorial efforts

European Jewish groups will honor the prime minister of Slovakia for his “commitment to tolerance.”

Premier Robert Fico is expected in Brussels later this month to receive the European Jewish Prize for Tolerance at an event organized by 17 Jewish groups, including the Rabbinical Centre of Europe and the European Jewish Community Centre, according to an announcement released Wednesday by the EJCC.

In March, a delegation of rabbis from the EJCC and the Brussels-based European Jewish Association lobby group met with Fico in Bratislava and thanked him for his role in designating Sept. 9 Slovakian Jewish Holocaust Memorial day.

Slovak 'neo-Nazi' wins election in Banska Bystrica

A right-wing extremist has been elected regional governor of Banska Bystrica in central Slovakia.

Marian Kotleba won 55.5% of the vote in the run-off against Vladimir Manka from the Smer-Social Democrat party.

Mr Kotleba is a former leader of a banned far-right organisation who now leads the ultra-nationalist Our Slovakia party.

He has previously organised marches against Slovakia's Roma minority.

The now-banned neo-Nazi party which Mr Kotleba formerly led had expressed sympathy for the Nazi puppet state which ruled Slovakia during World War II.

The former teacher has called for Slovakia to withdraw from Nato, which his party brands a "terrorist" organisation.

Of Slovakia's other seven regions, six were won by the social democrats, the party of the Prime Minister Robert Fico, according to AP.

Nonetheless, some Jewish figures in Europe are alarmed by Kotleba’s gaining a regional seat of political power. Moshe Kantor, the head of the European Jewish Congress, has asked European officials to “launch an action plan to reverse the momentum achieved by neo-Nazi political parties in Europe. “ “The neo-Nazis are gaining many political victories and are using the democratic system against democrats,” Kantor said in a statement. “Democracy has to fight back and European officials should immediately create a plan of action, including the proscription of neo-Nazi political parties, to deal with this phenomenon before it is too late.”

The prospering Vietnamese community in Slovakia is contemplating applying to be classed as a national minority, with a 5,000 strong community in the country, according to an article last week in SME daily.

Although no official application has been lodged with the competent authorities, as the requirements are not met, the Vietnamese civil association dealing with the issue plans to consult the situation with lawyers before taking next step in what would surely be a long and possibly senseless process.

A similar attempt was made twice by the 60,000 strong Vietnamese in the Czech Republic, but both were rejected as the government regards them as economic immigrants and not a historical minority (most came after the 1950s). Thirteen ethnic minorities are currently recognised in Slovakia, according to the daily.

Slovak Politics and Gay Rights

By DALIBOR ROHAC

December 30, 2014

Post-Communist countries can be likened to Western societies operating with a time lag — repeating the same debates that their Western counterparts had some 10 years ago. One such example is Slovakia’s current controversy over gay marriage and adoption by same-sex couples.

Although the institutionalization of gay marriages or child adoptions by same-sex couples hardly figures on the agenda of most political parties, the country has come a long way since its first Gay Pride event in 2010, which was disrupted by neo-Nazi youths. Because it is probably just a matter of time until gay unions and same-sex adoptions become palatable to most Slovaks, opponents of these reforms have launched a pre-emptive assault to make these reforms legally and politically costly.

Earlier this year, Slovakia’s Christian Democrats teamed up with the governing left-populist party, “Smer” (“Direction” in Slovak) of Prime Minister Robert Fico to pass a constitutional amendment to “protect the Slovak family,” vaguely reminiscent of the infamous Defense of Marriage Act, overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court last year. Since this past September, the Constitution of Slovakia thus stipulates that “marriage is a union solely between man and woman. The Slovak Republic fully protects marriage and provides all means to secure its wellbeing.”

Encouraged, Slovakia’s traditionalists are on the offensive. Following a petition organized by the civic campaign Alliance for Family, a nationwide referendum has been called for February to provide answers to several questions, including whether any form of partnership other than between a man and a woman could be called a marriage and whether a ban should be imposed on adoption of children by same-sex couples. The initial proposal contained another question — whether any other form of cohabitation should be given the legal attributes of marriage — which was ruled invalid by the country’s Constitutional Court, as it could violate people’s fundamental rights.

Anton Chromik, one of the leaders of the Alliance for Family, claims that “homosexuals are not asking just for ‘rights,’ but want to shut the mouths of other people. They will be making decisions over other people’s lives, careers, and that has always in history resulted in dictatorships and sometimes even in mass murders.”

Supporters of the campaign also question why professional psychological and psychiatric associations, or the World Health Organization, declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder in the latter half of the 20th century, and point to allegedly successful examples of “therapy” provided to gay people.

For the government of Prime Minister Fico, the controversy is a welcome — though temporary — distraction from some very real problems facing Slovakia. While its transition from Communism was a success, the country is still plagued by rampant corruption, chronic unemployment — exceeding 30 percent in some regions — and by the intergenerational poverty of the sizeable Roma population.

The country has also seen a geopolitical shift following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Mr. Fico becoming one of the Kremlin’s leading apologists. Unsurprisingly, Slovakia’s anti-gay activists have a soft spot for Vladimir Putin, too. Former Prime Minister Jan Carnogursky, a former Catholic dissident and an outspoken supporter of the referendum, noted recently that “in Russia, one would not even have to campaign for this — over there, the protection of traditional Christian values is an integral part of government policy” and warned against the “gender ideology” exported from the United States.

The neighboring Czech Republic has applied its own version of civil partnerships of same-sex couples since 2006, with very little controversy — largely because none of the doomsday predictions about the demise of the “traditional family” made by the law’s opponents have materialized. The Slovak case is different, in part, because of the stronger religiosity of its population. Most churches have endorsed the Alliance’s campaign and some clergymen have played a role in heating up the rhetoric, making parallels between homosexuality and genocide, for example.

The advocates of gay unions appear frustrated by the one-sidedness of the debate. “Our arguments have been exhausted and tend to be repetitive because we are not lying,” says Romana Schlesinger, one of the main organizers of the annual Gay Pride events in Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava. “The other side is much more creative. They will make up any argument, directed at anyone, just to appear persuasive.”

It seems unlikely that Slovak traditionalists will ultimately be on the winning side of this argument. In the meantime, the mean-spirited campaigning and frequent disparaging remarks about gays and their “condition” are a poor substitute for serious policy discussions and are making the country a much less pleasant place, and not just for its gay population.

Dalibor Rohac is a policy analyst at the Cato Institute’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity.

Default Salesians hesitantly distance themselves from priest denying Jews' deportation

Quote:
The SALESIANS of Don Bosco have reacted to the speech of priest Vojtech Zeman who talked about the wartime Slovak State in a way that could be close to the crime of denying the Holocaust.

On March 14, the anniversary of the establishment of the first Slovak State – a satellite of Nazi Germany during World War II – a public prayer was organised at the grave of the state’s executed president Jozef Tiso. This event was attended by several MPs and councillors of the ĽSNS party of Marian Kotleba (Banská Bystrica regional governor).

Zeman publicly questioned the deportation of 70,000 Slovak Jews to death camps. "This is a historical lie,” he said, talking to journalists and several participants. “This was written in books during communism, as historians were ordered to do so.”
