Louvre hosts first retrospective of French master Delacroix in half a century

Eugène Delacroix is one of French art's most famous – but possibly least understood – masters. The Louvre is hoping to change that with a full retrospective of his work, the first since the 1963 centenary of his death.

With its new exhibition, the Louvre Museum in Paris is hoping to take visitors beyond Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix’s most recognisable masterpieces, such as "Liberty Leading the People," which has graced postage stamps and bank notes in France as well as a Coldplay album cover.

Alongside the Mona Lisa, Delacroix's famed 1830 image of a bare-chested revolutionary woman brandishing a flag and bayonet is the Louvre's most visited painting.

Visitors who know little about Delacroix's extensive career will be enlightened by the Louvre's show, entitled "Delacroix 1798-1863," which opens Thursday.
