Default Russia's Idiot Parade / Cult of the 1945 Victory

Cult worship vs. Facts

At the end of February 2009, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Shoigu, proposed introducing criminal liability “for those who do not recognize the Holocaust and the fact of the victory of the Russian Army in the Great Patriotic War”. Later, Putin’s minister added that “he intends to go all the way until such a law is adopted.” Everything is said clearly and transparently about the Holocaust. In regards to the “victory of the Russian Army”, Shoigu’s wording is extremely awkward, since it’s hard to understand what he means. The victory of the Russian Army in the Great Patriotic War makes sense if we are talking about the year 1812. If Shoigu speaks of the Soviet-German war of 1941-45, then it is unclear where the “Russian Army” comes into the picture? The Russian State de facto ceased to exist in November 1917, and the dissolution of the Russian Army should be considered December 1921 (departure of the last train from Gallipoli).

The Soviet Army, more precisely the Red Army, fought against National Socialist Germany. However, it is known that the mass consciousness in today's Russia does not perceive such “subtleties”, and the average person remembers only one domestic war and does not see the difference between the Russian and Red armies. But even then, Shoigu’s thought is incomprehensible: does he really not recognize the fact that it was the Red Army that took Berlin in 1945?

What does the Shoigu initiative really mean?
Obviously the Russian authorities are trying to formalize and consolidate a new ideology. The yawning absence of a consolidating idea that would be shared by all segments of society did not escape their attention. Western society, with all its individualism, is united by the idea of consumption, which equally permeates all of its layers. Comfort and well-being have become a religion in the West, since for the European and American they are the entire meaning of life.

Any Western politician is sensitive to the soreness with which citizens perceive any limitation of their consumer potential. And at this level, the citizens can always rely on their rulers: they will understand and try to do something for them. It’s different in the Russian Federation. All attempts by the authorities to invent and introduce some kind of “new national idea” have so far failed. Despite short bursts of self-awareness, Russian society remains fragmented into small particles, each of which, individually and at the expense of others, seeks somehow to equip its being. The absurdity of a “new, democratic Russia” without a core central idea is obvious. In today's difficult conditions, this problem has become a serious concern of the Russian authorities.

Under Putin, the cult of the Great Victory arose, which gradually acquired the character of an obsessive mass show. Nevertheless, there are more and more facts and conclusions that do not fit into the official picture. And if earlier, dissent in this matter was the lot of two or three bold historians, now it is represented quite widely.

For the authorities of the Russian Federation, the cult of victory is extremely convenient because in a society that does not have common ideas and common shrines, it serves as a one-size-fits-all solution. It satisfies all “approved” patriots - from dark red to pale pink. The liberal camp, in principle, has only a few complaints against it. Even the extreme Russophobes can accept it, slightly shifting the emphasis: they say that only Russians could be proud of such a monstrous victory – they’re violent. It is pleasant to the West with its “anti-fascist” pathos. And now, through the lips of Shoigu, the authorities announced the need for the legal consolidation of this cult. There is no doubt that the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as he elegantly put it, “intends to go all the way.” This law will be adopted sooner or later, since the authorities of the Russian Federation decided to officially make a shrine out of someone else's “victory”.

A national idea built on a false myth is a house built on sand. You cannot cut down the published facts using an ax of criminal responsibility:

Hitler's attack took the Soviet leadership by surprise. But even before this attack, the USSR began covert mobilization - why?

Soldiers of the Red Army, perfectly armed, generally did not want to fight for Stalin. In 1941, having abandoned their weapons, they simply scattered to unknown whereabouts - why?

Of the approximately 4 million Soviet troops who were captured, about 1 million were willing to directly fight against the Soviet system - why?

Superstar of the Soviet pantheon, Marshal Zhukov, was a mediocre military leader and a mentally abnormal person - how was that possible?

The operations of the Red Army entailed enormous losses in manpower - where did such contempt for the lives of their people come from?

A victory for decades strengthened the criminal Soviet power, the occupation of Russia by the Bolsheviks - and such a victory can be considered a Russian national shrine?

There will be even more questions and conclusions. And no matter how arrogantly the priests of the new cult shrug them off, no matter how many tons of propagandic sand they bring to the construction of their “house”, it will still collapse. And along with it, this new “national idea” of the Russian Federation.
