Faber shares Holocaust horror

by Nhia Vang

UT Managing Editor

November 17, 2004 12:00 AM

David Faber received a standing ovation Friday night from a crowd of over 270 people that filled Fretwell, 100. […]

The 77-year-old Faber, a survivor of eight concentration camps during World War II, began the night pointing to a picture he had posted on a presentation board. […]

[…]

He also talked about how before his family left the city in fear, there was an incident where several grenades had been thrown into their apartment. […]

One day while his parents were at work, the Germans came to his uncle’s house. Faber stated the only reason he survived that attack was because he used his dead aunt’s body that had been infiltrated with bullets as a shield.

The Faber realized that the Nazi regime was close
. […]

[…]

Finally one day, the situation seemed to lighten for the family. The eldest of the children, Romek suddenly appeared at the door of the house — a ray of hope for the family. Romek had apparently disappeared for a time before the family moved to the city mysteriously. Faber later explained that his brother had been a prisoner of war for special reasons. Because of the results of the Geneva Convention at the time, he was released, and all Romek could do was run.

[…]

In the residence where they had been relocated, it had been easier for the Nazis to pin point where Jews were, and though the Fabers had been lucky up to this point, the Nazis came again in the night, sending random bullets into the apartment. After crawling out of the hiding place in the wall, Faber remembers his father fallen from the roof with bullets in his body.

Three days later, Romek attempted to remove Faber from the family for the sake of his safety, especially since he was the youngest in the family. However, in the midst of hiding, they were caught and taken to the Nazi headquarters where their family had previously registered.

While being held, Faber watched as the Nazis slowly tortured his brother. First, the Nazis put a red hot coal in his eye, followed by prying his mouth wide open with a clamp to a point that his jaw was broken and his skin torn. Then, they took out his tongue, and Faber watched his brother die.

Faber was next in line, he explained to his audience. Then, he pointed out that today, he only has two real teeth as a result of the torture from that day. Finally, he was released when the Nazis realized Faber was probably too young to answer any of their questions.

Faber was then thrown down a flight of stairs, which broke some of his rib bones before he was finally taken back home. Upon seeing Faber return in such a condition, his mother began crying and questioning Faber about Romek. Faber lied to his mother, telling her that Romek died a quick death. His intention was to protect her, but the shock of the news caused a heart attack that killed her.

[…]

Faber continued to speak to the attendees of the event, especially on the first time he entered the Auschwitz concentration camp. […] He even recalled meeting Anne Frank — a young girl whose family remained in hiding for several years during the war before they were found and finally sent to the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen.

Holocaust Survivor

11/16/2004

HARLAN — “Every minute was a triumph for me to be alive,” Judy Meisel told 150 wide-eyed freshmen at Harlan Community High School Thursday.

Meisel, a survivor of the Nazi death camps, spoke to students in Harlan, Audubon and Elk Horn-Kimballton last week. Her visit was sponsored by The Danish Immigrant Museum.

Meisel related her experiences and answered questions after students watched her documentary film, Tak for Alt, meaning Thanks for Everything. The film describes her experiences during World War II, and her eventual arrival in Denmark during the spring of 1945. […] She was taken into custody and placed in the concentration camp, forced into slave labor at the age of 12. […] One of her scariest moments was watching her mother taken to the gas chamber. When she visited the same chamber years later, you could still see the fingernails in the walls of the chamber, she said.

Gassed at Stutthof

Dated: October 30, 2004

Meisel, Holocaust survivor, lectures at SHU

By Neha Bawa

Judith Meisel, Holocaust survivor, lectured at Seton Hill University (SHU) on October 26, 2004.

[…]

In June 1944, her family, along with other Jews, was taken into trucks and sent to Stutthof concentration camp in Poland. Here she was separated from her brother.

We went into Stutthof and all I saw was [this] huge pile of shoes,” said Meisel, describing the camp. She lost her mother at Stutthof, where she was gassed to death.

Stutthof

An Important but Little-Known Wartime Camp

By Mark Weber

Gas Chamber Allegations

Some historians have insisted that prisoners were killed at Stutthof in a camp gas chamber.[26] According to a 1985 statement by Munich’s Institute for Contemporary History “more than one thousand” people were killed in a Stutthof gas chamber.[27] However, the evidence cited for homicidal gassings at Stutthof is meager and not very credible. The camp’s “gas chamber” building, which is still intact, is a small brick structure about two and a half meters high, five meters in length, three meters wide. American historian Konnilyn Feig has written that it looks “almost like a toy.” Polish officials have seriously claimed that the Germans gassed one hundred persons at a time in the chamber (that is, six or seven persons per square meter). Homicidal gassings with Zyklon were supposedly carried out intermittently between June and December 1944 in this chamber.[28]

Polish historian Krzysztof Dunin-Wasowicz believes that this building was neither designed nor built as a homicidal gassing facility. In an essay published in a semi-official work about the alleged homicidal “gas chambers,” he writes that this building was built as a (non-homicidal) gas chamber for treating clothes. However, he goes on to claim that this it was sometimes also improvisationally used to kill people. (“Originally the gas chamber was built as a room for delousing clothing, and it continued to be used for this purpose, too, for as long as it existed.”)[29]

Interestingly, the “gas chamber” building is not at all hidden or camouflaged, nor is it disguised as a shower. Therefore, if it had actually been used as a homicidal gassing facility, prospective victims apparently would have been under no illusion about the fate that awaited them. It is worth noting that the Germans in charge of the camp never made any effort to destroy or dismantle Stutthof’s supposed “extermination facility,” which is difficult to believe if, in fact, it had been a execution gas chamber.[30]

A West German court that heard “eyewitness testimony” about homicidal gassings at Stutthof declared in its 1964 verdict that “with regard to the gassings a positive determination was likewise not possible.” Evidence given by several supposed witnesses of gassings was found to be dubious or not credible.[31] Raul Hilberg makes no mention of homicidal gassings at Stutthof in his detailed three-volume Holocaust work. Two other prominent Holocaust historians, Lucy Dawidowicz and Nora Levin, likewise said nothing about the camp’s alleged extermination facility.

Survivor recalls Holocaust terror

Eva Olsson, a Holocaust survivor now living in Canada, was the featured speaker at an event held by the Jewish Students’ Association on Tuesday, October 12.

[…]

She described the nude inspections that they were forced to endure.

When Olsson was forced to take off her clothes, she hung them over her right arm, where she had a scar. She did not know that anyone with a scar would be sent to the gas chamber and was very fortunate in what she had done. […]

[…]

At Auschwitz, the guards did a roll call every morning, no matter what the weather was like. One morning they were fed “surprise soup,” which included human hair and bones.

Nazis Hated Hair

Dated: October 14, 2004

Holocaust survivor tells students at Monache her tales of terror

By Janet Enquist, The Porterville Recorder

The German soldiers admired her hair as she walked around the concentration camp.

“They said, ‘Look at her hair,'” said Holocaust survivor Elane Norych Geller. “It’s too pretty for a Jewish child. So they shaved my head. My aunt cried because she didn’t recognize me and for this she was beaten.”

This was one of many accounts Geller gave in a presentation to AVID students at Monache High School Wednesday afternoon. AVID stands for Advanced Via Individual Determination, which is a program designed to prepare high school students for a four-year college.

Geller was imprisoned when she was 4 years old and was not liberated until she was 8. […] Six million were killed and one million of those were children under the age of 17. […]

[…]

When the Nazis came into her town, her father told her to put on numerous dresses. She had so many on that she couldn’t put her arms down. He also took off her earrings because the Nazis were known for grabbing onto Jewish women’s earrings while they were running away to rip them off. […] Geller was taken to a concentration camp.

[…]

Since Geller was so young, she did not work. Therefore, in their eyes, she didn’t count. Her aunt shared whatever food she could with Geller.

“Every day that you lived there was a hope you would live another day,” Geller said. While in the camps she became sick with typhoid and tuberculosis. She also had two punctured ear drums from being hit and had suffered from lice and rats in her hair. She also drank urine and ate toothpaste. “I did whatever was necessary to stay alive.”

[…]

Students attending the presentation said it was interesting.

“I thought it was really good because she told us how it was and what she lived through so you don’t forget what happened,” said Victoria Avalos, 17.

I thought it was really educational,” said 15-year-old Ben Hensley. “I was amazed at all of the things she had to go through and how she could talk about it without her emotions coming out and just share it.”

Geller, who currently lives in Southern California, travels all over California and the United States to share her story
. […]

Jews still fear bathing

Chicago Nursing Homes Grouping Residents

By DON BABWIN, Associated Press Writer

Tue Oct 12, 4:17 AM ET

CHICAGO — Mid America Convalescent Center is one of a growing number of Chicago-area nursing homes that assemble residents by ethnicity. Asians live on one floor, Hispanics are on another.

Each group has its own traditional food, activities and a staff that speaks its language. Within a few miles are other facilities doing the same for Poles, Russians, Indians and Koreans.

There have long been nursing homes that cater to certain nationalities and religions, or become popular with different ethnic groups. But in Chicago, with the third largest number of foreign-born residents in the United States, that sort of specialization is becoming increasingly common and formalized, said Kevin Kavanaugh, spokesman for the Illinois Council on Long Term Care.

[…]

Kavanaugh,[…] said nursing homes often already deal with a specific population with specific needs.

“They may be reverting back in time, perhaps speaking their native language, living in the past,” he said. “You want to have a program that meets them at their sense of reality.”

Specialized ethnic care can be helpful, advocates argue. Nursing homes must be aware, for example, of elderly Jewish residents for whom a trip to the shower may trigger memories of the Holocaust.

The Holocaust was everywhere

Scholar: Holocaust crimes in countryside, small towns, too

by Kayleigh Kulp

Staff Writer

Issue date: 10.06.2004

Contrary to collective contemporary memory, the genocide of the Holocaust was perpetrated as much in small towns and the countryside as in the sprawling, mechanized death camps of the Third Reich, a Holocaust scholar said last night at the Kimmel Center.

[…]

Twenty-five percent, or about 1.4 million of total number of Jews killed were murdered outside of “bureaucratic processes,” Engel said, while 57 percent of total murdered Jews perished in concentration camps. The rest died in local, small-scale murders in smaller countries like Croatia, Ukraine and Estonia, said Engel, a Hebrew and Judaic studies professor and author of “The Holocaust: The Third Reich and the Jews.”

It happened outside of people’s homes and police headquarters; even peasants joined the Nazis to destroy lives. This is a little-known fact today, even to Holocaust scholar Rolf Wolfswinkel, a historian and the organizer of the series.

Beware of the ‘shower houses’

Holocaust survivor carries message of respect and tolerance

By Abigail Cukier
News Staff

Denial and fear kept Eva Olsson silent for 50 years about what happened to her family.

In 1996, she started speaking about losing almost her entire family in the Holocaust. She speaks because it helps her emotionally to talk about her time at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen and because she carries a message encouraging respect and tolerance.

[…]

On May 15, 1944, a policeman came and told Eva’s family they had two hours to pack their bags. They were going to work in a factory.

Eva, her parents, three siblings and five nieces arrived at the train station to see an endless row of boxcars. Soon, hundreds of people were loaded into the boxcars. Eva stood in the same spot for four days. It was difficult to get oxygen and the smell of human waste filled the air. Many people died on the trip.

[…]

After four days, they arrived at their destination. This was no factory, this was Auschwitz concentration camp. Eva saw men with large dogs and guns and the air was thick with black smoke.

[…]

The first time Eva was told where the thick black smoke was coming from. She did not believe. She learned though that men, women and children were being ushered into the shower houses and killed by lethal gas, hundreds could be killed in 20 minutes.

Flames and a terrible smell

Holocaust Memorial to Open in Oregon

SARAH LINN
Associated Press

Posted on Sat, Aug. 28, 2004

PORTLAND, Ore. — For years, Chella Kryszek had nightmares about the dark, crowded cattle cars that shuttled her from concentration camp to concentration camp as a Dutch Jew during the Holocaust.

She remembers stepping out of one such car in 1943 outside the notorious Auschwitz-Berkenau death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. Smoke and flames painted the sky and there was “a terrible smell,” Kryszek said.

Gas Chambers at Buchenwald

Dated: August 20, 2004

Photographs give testament to the horror of the Holocaust

06:52 PM CDT on Friday, August 20, 2004

By BILL MARVEL / The Dallas Morning News

When Oscar Wilson went to war, the U.S. Army issued him the usual battle gear, plus a jeep and a trailer, a submachine gun, a couple of cameras and film.

In the end, it was the cameras and film that made all the difference. […]

[…]

Mr. Wilson took the pictures the day after U.S. soldiers drove their tanks through the walls at Buchenwald and liberated the camp.

[..]

“The first thing we did was to go into the offices of the head guard,” Mr. Wilson says. In the offices there were lamps whose shades, they were told, were made of human skin. A gallon fruit jar stood on a desk. It was full of gold fillings taken from prisoners’ teeth.

[…]

They were shown the large receiving room where people brought in on the trains would shed their clothes.

“Then they’d come into the next room, the shower. The shower heads were hooked up to gas cylinders.”

[…]

People will always find ways to get around what the camera tells them, Mr. Wilson says. “We did photographs of the moon landing and we still had many nonbelievers.

“The same is true of the Holocaust. It’s such an unbelievable thing.”

Buchenwald: Legend and Reality

Buchenwald is widely regarded as one of wartime Germany's most notorious "death camps." In fact, though, this carefully cultivated image bears little resemblance to reality. Today, more than forty years after the end of the Second World War, the camp deserves another, more objective look.

Holocaust Survivor: He Shouldn’t Get Away with Murder

KDKA | kdka.com

Aug 10, 2004 6:46 pm US/Eastern

The federal government wants a Mercer County man’s citizenship revoked, saying the now 79-year-old retired steelworker served as a guard at two Nazi concentration camps in 1943.

But neighbors of Anton Geiser find it hard to believe he could have worked at a concentration camp.

Though some of Geiser’s neighbors say they plan to start a petition drive and contact lawmakers to keep him in the country, a local Holocaust survivor has a very different view of the case.

For Jack Sittsamer, 79, no amount of time can erase the horrors of the concentration camps.

“The crematorium could not work as fast so they used to burn the bodies… Some of the camps didn’t have crematoriums,” Sittsamer adds, “They just stuck your head in a barrel of water and they held you down for a few minutes and that’s it.”

Crematory Stench

Dated: August 9, 2004

Holocaust educators tell their stories

Stanislaw Gawel’s parents were children when the Nazis moved them from their towns across the Polish river Sola so that they would not bear witness to the destruction in Auschwitz and Birkenau, located near their homes.

But the transfer did not erase their memories. “When they were children they saw hundreds of Jews marching every day to the chemical factory [for forced labor]… and they smelled a smell in the air [which they later] recognized as the smell of human bodies in the crematoriums of Birkenau” Gawel told The Jerusalem Post. Monday.

No light, no smoke, no stench, no holes: no "Holocaust"!

Robert Faurisson

June 25, 1999

In addition to: "No holes, no 'Holocaust'!", one may add:

"And no light, no smoke, no stench",

in accord with Dr Maurice Rossel, member of the International Committee of the Red Cross who, in September 1944, visited the Commandant of the Auschwitz camp (see "Sur Auschwitz, un document capital de la Croix-Rouge internationale", Ecrits révisionnistes (1974-1998), p. 219-224, as published in Mémoire en défense, 1980, p. 241-247).

This morning in the Washington Post (p. C1, C8) there appeared a long article by Mark Fisher, "The Truth That Can Only Hurt", reviewing Claude Lanzmann's recent "documentary" film A Visitor from the Living, about the above-named Dr Rossel. Extracts:

Lanzmann moves in, his short, calm questions presented like invitations to a dance, with all the proper flourishes and courtesies.

"Did you know you were in an extermination camp?"

"I didn't know the scale it had reached", Rossel says, and for the first time, he is looking off, just slightly away.

"Did you see a light glimmering?" It seems the Poles in nearby villages have told Lanzmann that they saw this light from Auschwitz, this reflection of horror.

"I saw none, no smoke," Rossel says.

"No stench?"

"No stench."

Still smelling gas at Dachau

More hits from the politically correct songbook

By Frank Haden

Sunday Star Times

New Zealand, Sunday, August 8, 2004

[…]

I’ve seen more evidence of the Holocaust than many New Zealanders because I’ve taken the trouble to visit concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Majdanek and Dachau.

There’s not much chance of getting into bed with Holocaust deniers when you’ve seen mountains of human ash, smelled the traces of poison gas that still linger in the duckboards of those lethal “shower rooms”,
and walked through Jewish neighbourhoods where the legal title of every building is still being negotiated because the owners were obliterated 60 years ago.

[…]

These short sentences really sum up the case in support of the Holocaust extermination thesis. This author, who claims actually to have visited three concentration camps, likewise claims to have seen “mountains of human ash” (there are not even traces of human ash, let alone mountains), smelled non-existent traces of (poison) gas not only at Auschwitz and Majdanek, but also at Dachau (where only fanatics still claim there were homicidal gas chambers), and furthermore he claims to have smelled the non-existent poison gas among the “duckboards” of the concrete, brick, and mortar buildings that are claimed to have been homicidal gas chambers. It’s astonishing what you can get away with saying in support of the Holocaust myth.

Best Evidence

Dated: July 7, 2004

Preserving Auschwitz: Forensic evidence of the Holocaust is the best answer to the deniers.

from the Wall Street Journal editorial page

LEISURE & ARTS

BY TIMOTHY RYBACK Wednesday, July 7, 2004 12:01 a.m. EDT

Last month, Jarek Mensfelt, spokesman for the Auschwitz memorial site, announced plans to preserve the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria in the notorious death camp at Birkenau near the Polish town of Oswiecim. […]

[…]

Of course, the historical and circumstantial evidence of a premeditated Nazi plan to exterminate the Jewish population of Europe is overwhelming. […] The dearth of hard evidence has fueled a growth industry in Holocaust-denial.

The revisionists’ plaint is simple: They demand a proverbial “smoking gun” to prove that the Nazis deliberately and systematically designed an industrial system of extermination. […]

[…]

In the battle against Holocaust deniers, Birkenau’s extermination facilities remain important forensic evidence. […]

Between 1942, when they were first put into operation, and 1944, when they were dynamited, more than a million human beings — mostly Jewish — were fed into these extermination plants, forced into subterranean chambers and gassed, their corpses removed and transported by mechanical conveyance to the crematoria ovens. The chimneys belched smoke into the air. The remnant ash was scattered in the surrounding fields, or dumped in a nearby pond whose muddied bottom, even today, is of a sticky gray viscosity laced with matchstick-size splinters of human bone.

[…]

Mr. Ryback is author of “The Last Survivor: Legacies of Dachau.”

__________________________

Webmaster note: Other than the observation that crematory buildings 1 and 2 at Birkenau were almost certainly destroyed in 1945, there is no evidence that anyone was forced into the underground (!) rooms said to have functioned as gas chambers. There is no evidence of a “mechanical conveyance” to lift the claimed millions of poison-laden corpses up to the crematory ovens. Crematory ovens are designed NOT to belch smoke (or stench). And there are no known remnants of ash or bone splinters, either in surrounding fields or in any pond: if there were, it could be shown that this ash was human in origin.

People Who Say I’m Lying Are Dangerous

Dated: June 24, 2004

Holocaust survivor warns students

Youth learn blunt lesson: It happened; it could happen again

Fifty-nine years have passed since Mike Jacobs was freed from a Nazi concentration camp.

And he has one word to describe people who deny that millions of Jews were mutilated and murdered during World War II: “dangerous. These people are very dangerous.”

Mr. Jacobs, founder of the Dallas Holocaust Memorial Center, shared his experiences with hundreds of summer-school students Thursday at Garland High School.

[…]

Mr. Jacobs, who was arrested at age 14 in his native Poland and taken to the infamous camp at Auschwitz, said it was easy for the Nazi soldiers to hate Jews.

[…]

In some cases, Nazis would force children to sing and dance “while their parents were burning alive.”

An orchestra played throughout the atrocities.

“You worked by orchestra,” Mr. Jacobs said. “You were tortured by orchestra. Everything was done to music.”

“Babies were thrown into the air for target practice, he said. And some soldiers would force women to hold their babies to their chests “so that they could be shot with one bullet, through the child’s head and the woman’s heart.”

[…]

Human fat was used to make soap,” Mr. Jacobs explained, adding that gold-filled teeth were yanked from the mouths of corpses. “Human skin was used to make lampshades.”
