Craig Cobb.
I walked 60 miles over the Rocky mountains at 4,000 feet from British Columbia, Canada into Montana, USA to escape the RCMP federal warrant. The Von Trapp family hike in reverse, I like to call it. But in 2010 most of the winter, I had to live in a dugout hole in the ground in the Montana forest with pine boughs on floor and walls and longs and tarp and boughs on the roof. That was a harder time, but I proved to myself I could do it.

What is it?

The ancient and noble art of running away and not getting caught, E&E can be perceived either two ways:

1: A 'boys' own' romp in the woods, like hide and seek, but for grown ups.

2: The uncomfortable preamble to a good kicking.

The first type can be fun, running around the local spinney with your mates and hiding in bushes and up trees. A bit like Airsoft, but without the inevitable hail of plastic following you around.

The second type isn't. The grim reality kicks in pretty sharpish. You will invariably be totally fucked before the exercise has even started, and it's all uphill henceforth. Add to this heavy doses of cold, wet and hungry.

E&E was one of those things you only did badly once, as the kickings were.. well they didn't hold back!

That's pure talent. Even though the guy stole a bunch of stuff, I can't say I fault him for it. I normally wouldn't condone stealing, but for someone in his situation, I can't blame him. He was probably caught up in the cold war era thinking there was going to be a nuclear war at some point, and the wilderness in Maine was about as good of a place as any to survive such an event. Its so remote, nowhere in the vicinity would have been a likely target for a nuclear strike.
