Wow, only 3,300 total incarcerated in Norway. Here in New York state I think the total prison population is somewheres around 65,000 with hundreds of thousands more parolees and folks on probation. So that would make it around 1 in 15 or somesuch New Yorkers either locked down or on supervision.

Just in my local area alone the city, county and federal jails hold close to 25,000 inmates ...some folks are making money off locking up others is what it really comes down to.

Jailing people is big business in America, it has little to do with a 'John Wayne' attitude.

I've read studies that show that depression and incidence of suicide are far higher in Scandinavia than in comparable countries. It seems the welfare state cradle-to-grave mentality, combined with a total lack of internal or external strife (wars and civil unrest) makes people feel that life has no purpose or meaning. In such a society you can imagine someone embarking on a crime spree just to create some excitement.

Norway is one them places where it is worth it to be a criminal. The risk of dealing drugs making a bunch of money and possible getting caught isn't that much of a deterrent. If you do get caught you're probably not going to do much time, and the prisons are not bad at all. The weird thing is a lot of Norwegians are proud of their lax laws, and they believe criminals are the victims, the oppressed and down trodden, that they can rehabilitate! So if you're ever on the run and facing a lot of jail time try and get to Norway and get locked up there, they probably wont extradite you.
