Hate preacher Anjem Choudary has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years’ imprisonment after being convicted of drumming up support for Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The 49-year-old British-born leader of outlawed group al-Muhajiroun posted a series of YouTube videos recognizing the “caliphate” created by IS in the territories of Iraq and Syria.

At sentencing at the Old Bailey, Choudary and his co-defendant Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, who received the same sentence, were found guilty of inviting support for IS between June 29, 2014 and March 6, 2015 and remanded into custody.

As Choudary was sentenced, his supporters in the public gallery shouted “Allahu Akbar.”

During the trial, Justice Holroyde said the pair failed to condemn the barbaric acts of IS.

“You did nothing to condemn any aspect of what ISIS was doing at the time. In that way you indirectly encouraged violent terrorist activity.

“You are both mature men and intelligent men who knew throughout exactly what you were doing. You are both fluent and persuasive speakers.”

He described Choudary as “calculating,” while Rahman was simply a “hothead,” albeit equally dangerous and remorseless.

Despite leading al-Muhajiroun, Choudary had kept on the right side of the law for 20 years.

However, his enthusiastic videos in support of IS gave police cause to arrest him under section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Details of the case could not be reported until last month due to legal restrictions.

Choudary and his organization have been blamed by counter-terrorism experts for radicalizing hundreds of people, including Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, who murdered soldier Lee Rigby outside Woolwich Royal Artillery Barracks in 2013.

Choudary was last seen in public while on bail in April, ordering a meal from a north London McDonald’s. A picture of the sharia law-supporting preacher was released on Tuesday, showing Choudary holding a loaded tray at the counter.

“Considering he hates everything about the West, and is also meant to only eat at halal places, he is clearly a hypocrite. I had heard of this guy before and I was a bit surprised given what he preaches so I took a picture of it,” a witness said.

“I live in Luton and he is often there preaching and I have seen him numerous times. There was a couple of people that also recognized him. He had a disagreement with someone there, but I don’t know what they were saying.”

HATE preacher Anjem Choudary issued a rallying cry to supporters just hours before Sir David Amess' murder.

The radical cleric called on fanatics to join a "Twitter storm" in support of freeing fellow extremist Abu Hamza from jail.


Hook-handed Hamza is currently being held in a maximum security prison in the US after being convicted over his involvement in a terror attack.

The Finsbury Park mosque imam also tried to set up jihad training camp in Oregon.

Choudary made the vile plea on the encrypted Telegram network as he urged followers to flood Twitter using the hashtag #FreeAbuHamzaAlMisri.

He wrote: “Sheikh Abu Hamza is a renowned Imam, lecturer and Muslim activist who has been seriously tortured by the American regime for the last 9 years.


“If it were not enough that his extradition and incarceration was based upon evidence extracted through torture itself, he has been placed in the notorious ADX Florence which experts say is unsuitable for human beings, let alone for a double amputee disabled man, with various other serious health conditions.

"The Twitter storm tonight is to raise awareness about the situation of Sheikh Abu Hamza and his family."



He accompanied his plea with a black and white sketch of a prison cell - claiming the "British regime cruelly extradited him".

It came the evening before Sir David was stabbed to death at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, on Friday.

Suspect Ali Harbi Ali is understood to have been radicalised after watching YouTube videos of Choudary.

The convicted hate preacher is considered one of the most influential and dangerous radicalisers in the UK.

His followers included Michael Adebolajo, who murdered Fusilier Lee Rigby in South London in 2013.


Choudary was jailed for five-and-a-half years in 2016 after being convicted of inviting support for Islamic State.

But the bile-spewing cleric was released in 2018 after serving just half his sentence.

Murder suspect Ali was previously referred to the Government’s Prevent anti-terror scheme but investigators are still piecing together how and when he became radicalised.

It's believed he was referred to the scheme as long ago as seven years ago by a teacher who believed him to be an extremist risk.

One friend who witnessed his dramatic change told The Sun: “Choudary was someone he became utterly obsessed with.”

Ali is still being held in custody under the Terrorism Act and officers have until Friday to question him.

Despite Ali’s radicalisation, relatives claimed he had trained to become an NHS doctor after spending four years at a top medical school.

But investigators are confident that Ali, 25, was not directed by terror kingpins abroad.
