Parents of Otto Warmbier file claim for North Korean cargo ship

(JTA) — The parents of Jewish American college student Otto Warmbier filed a claim for a North Korean cargo ship seized by the U.S.

The claim filed in federal court in New York on Wednesday in New York said the asset could be used to pay off part of a $501 million wrongful death judgement against the North Korean government for the death of their son, who was detained on trumped up charges in the country for over a year and died shortly after he was returned home in June 2017 in a coma.

The University of Virginia student had been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. His doctors in the U.S. said he suffered extensive brain damage. Warmbier was traveling to Hong Kong for a study abroad program when he decided to visit North Korea on a guided tour.

“The Warmbiers are committed to holding North Korea accountable for the death of their son Otto, and will work tirelessly to seize North Korean assets wherever they may be found,” Ben Hatch, an attorney for the family, told The Associated Press in a statement.

North Korea's Kim says missile test a warning to South Korean 'warmongers'

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Friday its latest missile launch was a warning to South Korean “warmongers” to stop importing weapons and conducting joint military drills, a message analysts said was also aimed at the United States.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally watched the test-fire of two short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday, the first test since Kim met with U.S. President Donald Trump last month and agreed to revive denuclearization talks.

North Korea tests more missiles despite efforts at diplomatic solutions

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles early on Wednesday, the South Korean military said, only days after it launched two similar missiles intended to pressure South Korea and the United States to stop upcoming military drills.

The firings follow launches on July 25, North Korea’s first missile tests since leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump met on June 30 and agreed to revive stalled denuclearization talks.

The series of missile tests raises the stakes for U.S. and South Korean diplomats criss-crossing the region this week in the hope of restarting talks aimed at persuading Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

Sell ‘Wise Honest’ ship to pay NoKo debt to Otto Warmbier parents: judge

A federal judge has given the green light for the sale of a seized North Korea vessel to pay down the judgement awarded to the parents of Otto Warmbier, who died after being detained in the hermit kingdom.

Parents Frederick and Cynthia Warmbier won a $500 million judgment against North Korea for the death of their son, who was arrested at the Pyongyang airport in 2016 — during a guided tour of the rogue state ahead of a study abroad program in Hong Kong — for stealing a propaganda poster.

Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for the alleged theft and served 18 months before the Trump administration negotiated his release. But he was sent home in a vegetative state and died a week later.

Proceeds from the sale of the ship, the Wise Honest, which reportedly could go for up to $3 million, will go to the Warmbiers to pay down the judgment. Manhattan federal court Judge Kevin Castel ruled in a filing signing off on the sale of the ship.

To date, the North Korean regime has not responded to the Warmbiers’ wrongful death claims, but has denied accusations that Warmbier was tortured during his detention, saying that the American was given “medical treatments and care with all sincerity” while he was a prisoner.

Despite how Trump and his administration boosted the narrative that Otto was physically tortured, however, the evidence was not clear-cut. The day after the Warmbiers went on national television to declare that Otto had been “systematically tortured and intentionally injured,” a coroner who had examined Otto, Dr. Lakshmi Kode Sammarco, unexpectedly called a press conference. She explained that she hadn't previously done so out of respect for the Warmbiers. But her findings, and those of the doctors who had attended Otto, contradicted the Warmbiers' assertions.

Fred had described Otto's teeth as having been “re-arranged” with pliers, but Sammarco reiterated that the postmortem exam found that “the teeth [were] natural and in good repair.” She discovered no significant scars, dismissing the one on his foot as not definitively indicative of anything. Other signs of physical trauma were also lacking. Both sides of Otto's brain had suffered simultaneously, meaning it had been starved of oxygen. (Blows to the head would have likely resulted in asymmetrical, rather than universal, damage.) Though the Warmbiers declined a surgical autopsy, non-invasive scans found no hairline bone fractures or other evidence of prior trauma. “His body was in excellent condition,” Sammarco said. “I'm sure he had to have round-the-clock care to be able to maintain the skin in the condition it was in.” When asked about the Warmbiers' claims, Sammarco answered, “They're grieving parents. I can't really make comments on what they said or their perceptions. But here in this office, we depend on science for our conclusions.” Three other individuals who had close contact with Otto on his return also did not notice any physical signs consistent with torture.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country’s latest launch of tactical guided missiles was a warning to the United States and South Korea over their joint military drills that began this week, state media KCNA reported on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s missile launch, the North’s fourth in less than two weeks, came amid stalled denuclearization talks with Washington and U.S.-South Korea military exercises, although Washington and Seoul played down the tests.

Kim said the latest missile test was “an occasion to send an adequate warning to the joint military drill now underway by the U.S. and South Korean authorities”, according to KCNA.

North Korea says it successfully tested new submarine-launched ballistic missile

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Thursday it had successfully test-fired a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from the sea to contain external threats and bolster self-defense, ahead of fresh nuclear talks with the United States.

The launch on Wednesday was the most provocative by North Korea since it resumed dialogue with the United States in 2018 and a reminder by Pyongyang of the weapons capability it has been aggressively developing, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, analysts said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “sent warm congratulations” to the defense scientists who conducted the test, state news agency KCNA said, indicating he did not attend the launch as he has at previous tests of new weapons systems.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - North Korea warned the United States, Britain, France and Germany on Monday that raising the issue of Pyongyang’s missile tests at the United Nations Security Council would “further urge our desire to defend our sovereignty.”

The 15-member council is due to meet behind closed doors on Tuesday after North Korea said it had test-fired a new submarine-launched ballistic missile last week. The discussion was requested by Germany with the support of Britain and France.

“We know well that the United States is behind impure moves of the UK, France and Germany,” North Korea’s U.N. Ambassador Kim Song told a small group of reporters at Pyongyang’s U.N. mission.

“The United States and its followers should bear in mind that if they raise the issue of our self-defensive measures at the U.N. Security Council meeting in this moment, it will further urge our desire to defend our sovereignty,” Kim said.

North Korea calls U.S. Democrat Biden a ‘rabid dog’ nearing death


SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea’s state media on Friday stepped up a personal attack on former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden for slandering its leader, calling the Democratic presidential candidate “a rabid dog” that needed to be put down.

The official KCNA news agency did not say how Biden had insulted the North’s leader, Kim Jong Un, but the 2020 presidential hopeful has been critical of U.S. President Donald Trump’s policy, saying he was coddling a murderous dictator.

Misspelling Biden’s name, KCNA said the former vice president was showing signs of “the final stage of dementia,” and the “time has come for him to depart his life.”

Pyongyang has made it clear that it will not agree to another high-level meeting between Chairman Kim Jong-un and the US President Donald Trump unless Washington changes its “hostile” policies towards the Asian nation.

Talks between North Korea and the US on Pyongyang’s nuclear program, kicked off by a Trump-Kim summit in Singapore in June 2018, have failed to produce any meaningful results and improve bilateral relations between the two nations, North’s Foreign Ministry adviser Kim Kye Gwan said.

The negotiating process ended up in a deadlock even though two leaders had a meeting in February, exchanged letters and met at the border between two Koreas in June.

Hillel director backs off accusations against student

Facing possible legal action, the director of George Washington University's Hillel this week distanced himself from an e-mail accusing a third-year law student at the District school of being a terrorist.

Robert Fishman's letter in Monday's GW Hatchet, the school paper, comes after a March 29 e-mail to GWU Hillel's listserv urging Jewish students to attend a rally that was to take place on campus the following day and focus on divestment from Israel. Law student Fadi Kiblawi was the rally's leader.

The e-mail stated that Kiblawi is "considered a terrorist by the state of Israel, and has been convicted of crimes in both Israel and the United States. He advocates for the destruction of Israel, and in its place, the creation of a Palestinian state. He has also openly admitted to associating with suicide bombers and has made comments in the past about his desire to become a suicide bomber."

According to news reports, Kiblawi was detained in Israel in July 2004 for entering a closed military zone, but was not convicted of a crime. WJW could find no independent reports that he has called for the destruction of Israel or expressed a desire to become a suicide bomber.

In his letter on Monday, Fishman stated, "Regrettably, that correspondence included an unfortunate characterization of one of the lead activists [in the G.W. divestment campaign], Fadi Kiblawi, and has overshadowed the issue. As Kiblawi pointed out, the issue at hand should not be one of personality, but one of substance."

Fishman's letter came after Kiblawi had said he was considering legal action against both Hillel and the Jewish Defense League if allegations against him were not dropped.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed “great satisfaction” over the latest test of a large multiple-rocket launcher, state media said on Friday, a launch that experts said showcased improving performance by the system and its crews.

North Korea fired two short-range projectiles into the sea off its east coast on Thursday in a fourth test of its new “super-large multiple-rocket launcher”, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said told a briefing.

N. Korea envoy at UN says denuclearization ‘already off the table’ in talks with US

North Korea’s ambassador to the UN has rejected Washington’s call for “sustained and substantial dialogue,” saying that the denuclearization sought by the Trump administration is already “gone out (sic) of the negotiating table.”

"We do not need to have lengthy talks with the US now and denuclearization is already gone out of the [sic] negotiating table," ambassador Kim Song said in a statement on Saturday.

Song added that the Trump administration’s calls for dialogue are a “time-saving trick” to push the denuclearization issue past next year’s election.

SEOUL (Reuters) - With international focus on the coronavirus, North Korea has doubled down on its missile development and military exercises in recent weeks while signaling new confidence that it has dodged an outbreak of its own.

Some international experts are skeptical of North Korea’s assertion that it has not had a single case of the new coronavirus, which was first detected in neighboring China.

But for the first time since late February, North Korean soldiers conducting military drills and test firing short-range ballistic missiles over the weekend were shown not wearing face masks in state media photographs.

North Korea has said it has released almost all the foreigners it quarantined as a precaution, and in a decision that surprised some experts, announced it would hold a big gathering of its Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) in early April.

North Korea fires more missiles than ever amid coronavirus outbreak

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the ocean off its east coast on Sunday, the latest in an unprecedented flurry of launches that South Korea decried as “inappropriate” amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

Two “short-range projectiles” were launched from the coastal Wonsan area, and flew 230 kilometers (143 miles) at a maximum altitude of 30 kilometers (19 miles), South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported.

“In a situation where the entire world is experiencing difficulties due to COVID-19, this kind of military act by North Korea is very inappropriate and we call for an immediate halt,” South Korea’s JCS said in a statement, according to Yonhap news agency.

North Korean leader absence from anniversary event fuels speculation over health

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s absence from an important anniversary event this week rekindled speculation over his potential health problems, analysts said on Friday.

North Korea on Wednesday marked the anniversary of the birthday of its national founder and Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung, as a national holiday known as the Day of the Sun.

Senior officials paid tribute to the embalmed body of Kim Il Sung enshrined in the Kumsusan Palace of Sun, state media KCNA said on Thursday. But did not mention Kim as part of the delegation, unlike the past. He was also absent from photos released by party mouthpiece Rodong Sinmun.

His purported absence triggered speculation among experts that Kim, who is aged 36 and overweight, might be having health problems.

(CNN)The US is monitoring intelligence that suggests North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, is in grave danger after undergoing a previous surgery, according to a US official with direct knowledge.

A second source familiar with the intelligence told CNN that the US has been closely monitoring reports on Kim's health.

Kim recently missed the celebration of his grandfather's birthday on April 15, which raised speculation about his well-being. He had been seen four days before that at a government meeting.

Another US official told CNN Monday that the concerns about Kim's health are credible but the severity is hard to assess.
