.American Apparel continues to rack up losses

Profitability remains out of reach for American Apparel, the US teen retailer famous for its racy adverts.

The company said it lost $37.5m in the second quarter, more
than twice its loss a year earlier, as costs to pay off its debt weighed on its
results.

Excluding the cost of those one-time debt payments and the change in the value of some warrants, American Apparel said it lost $10.9m, or 10 cents a share, compared to a $13.9m loss a year earlier.

Sales grew 9 per cent to $162.2m, bolstered by increases in orders from its website.

Analysts polled by Bloomberg had forecast a loss of 5 cents a share on sales
of $162m.

Dov Charney, chief executive of the company, said:

We are pleased with the continued strong sales performance in all three
business channels, particularly in light of the sales we believe we lost as a
result of the supply chain issues we faced this quarter.

The retailer said it would move to an automated distribution system at one of its California warehouses to lower costs, and shutter a distribution centre in Canada.

American Apparel has had a troubling few years, warning in 2011 that it could have to file for
bankruptcy before a $15m infusion from a group of private investors solved part
of the company's liquidity problems. The retailer lost $37.2m in 2012 and $39.3m
in 2011.

The company's shares fell 2.5 per cent in after-hours trading.
