McCain Lines Up N.Y. Money Men, Raising Pressure on Rudy Giuliani

Jennifer Siegel | Fri. Jan 05, 2007

Arizona Senator John McCain has scored an early victory in the battle between GOP presidential frontrunners by locking up support from several New York-area Republican moneymen also coveted by his northeastern rival, former Big Apple mayor Rudy Giuliani.

McCain’s stable of national finance co-chairs includes Lewis Eisenberg, a multimillionaire financier from Rumson, N.J. who previously served as finance chairman for the Republican National Committee and was a key fundraiser for former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman.

According to a 140-page memo leaked to the New York Daily News and published earlier this week, Eisenberg’s name — along with that of fellow Jewish financier and McCain supporter Henry Kravis — was originally included on a “prospective leadership” list drafted by the Giuliani campaign.

The disclosure of the former mayor’s campaign plan — which acknowledges the concern that Giuliani might “drop out of [the] race” due to potentially “insurmountable” personal and political vulnerabilities — has underscored his scramble for some of the same deep-pocketed donors recruited by McCain.

The New York-area Republicans are “moderate in their approach to things — they are not big radical ideologues [so] who are these guys going to go to? Either they go to Giuliani or they go to McCain,” said David Twersky, director of international affairs for the American Jewish Congress. Twersky, a longtime observer of Garden State affairs and former editor of the New Jersey Jewish News, added, “This is a very good sign for McCain, that he is getting Republican establishment moderates.”

A year before the GOP’s presidential primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire, the party’s field of contenders is still taking shape: McCain and Giuliani are the first two candidates to have officially established presidential exploratory committees — which allow them to raise and spend money in pursuit of the 2008 nomination — while outgoing Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was expected this week to file his papers. Other Republican hopefuls include Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter of California.

A spokesperson for Giuliani, Sunny Mindel, declined to comment on this week’s memo leak, which she described to the Daily News as “suspicious activity.” According to the newspaper’s report, the document was passed on by a source sympathetic to one of Giuliani’s opponents. It was allegedly left behind during one of the former mayor’s campaign trips last fall.

The incident is not the first time in recent weeks that the Giuliani camp has seemed to come up short against McCain: Hours before the former mayor’s first major New York fundraiser, held last month on December 19, the senator’s team released a 57-member New York-area finance committee list — the campaign’s only announcement of regional supporters thus far.

McCain’s heavily Jewish finance committee includes Kravis; Mark Broxmeyer, a Long Island real estate magnate; Dr. Ben Chouake, president of the New Jersey-based pro-Israel political action committee Norpac, and Barbara Sobel, whose husband, entrepreneur Clifford Sobel, is a major GOP fundraiser who was appointed by President Bush as ambassador to the Netherlands and later Brazil.

According to Chouake, members of the New York-area finance committee have pledged to raise a minimum of $50,000 each. He said that he personally had approached the campaign with an offer of support, based on his concern about the situation in the Middle East. “The 800-pound gorilla in the room right now is Iran,” Chouake told the Forward. “You have the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who represents the first country in the world to openly state, ‘We intend to get nuclear weapons, and we intend to commit genocide.’ This is an immense threat to the United States, and this is an immense threat to Israel. So who are you going to support?… For me, the person that is the most capable, most experienced, most courageous to defend our country, would be John McCain.”

For years, McCain, who has been calling for more American troops to be sent to Iraq, has developed strong ties with neoconservatives in Washington, sharing their hawkish voices on several key fronts.

In recent weeks, McCain has been signaling that an attention to Jewish issues will remain on his agenda as his campaign moves forward.

On the staffing front, the Arizona senator has recruited Jay Zeidman — former White House liaison to the Jewish community — to help with finance and fundraising operations as well as with Jewish outreach. Zeidman’s father is Houston Republican Fred Zeidman, who is chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and one of Bush’s closest donors. According to two Republican sources, the senior Zeidman has not ruled out throwing his weight behind Romney.

“I think a lot of the smart money is going to go Mitt’s way, because they feel that Giuliani is unelectable and McCain is going to have some type of problem — he’ll stumble, [or] his age [will be an issue]… and people don’t trust him ideologically,” one Republican operative said.

In a December 10 address at Yeshiva University, McCain said that withdrawing American troops from Iraq precipitously “is to risk catastrophe,” leading to the possibility of a failed state in a strategic region. He also defended America’s larger strategy of promoting democracy in the Middle East. Two days later, the senator traveled to Israel as part of weeklong trip to the region that also included stops in Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

While in the Jewish state, McCain’s delegation — which also included Senators Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, John Thune, Mark Kirk and Joseph Lieberman — met with a number of political leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

While insisting that the heavy representation of Jews among McCain boosters is not based on a “religious thing,” exploratory committee spokesman Craig Goldman embraced the suggestion that the list reflects well on the senator’s campaign.

“We are honored and thrilled” to have their support, Goldman said, adding that McCain “is by far [the] frontrunner for the president of the United States. They believe in his message, they believe in what he says and what he believes in, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s a strong supporter of Israel, as well.”

Lewis Eisenberg (jew)

McCain’s stable of national finance co-chairs includes Lewis Eisenberg, a multimillionaire financier from Rumson, N.J. who previously served as finance chairman for the Republican National Committee and was a key fundraiser for former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman.

Lewis M. Eisenberg

For many years, Mr. Eisenberg was a partner of Goldman Sachs & Co. In 1990, he founded Granite Capital International Group, an investment management company headquartered in New York City. Mr. Eisenberg also served from 1995 to 2001 as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Port Authority is also, of course, the owner of the World Trade Center, and Mr. Eisenberg led the agency through the first three months of recovery and clean-up after the terrorist attacks of September 11. He was recently named a member of New York’s Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Authority, which will spearhead the rebuilding of Ground Zero.

His community and charitable activities include leadership in health and healthcare related institutions. He is on the Planning Board of UJA/United Jewish Federation.

Mr. Eisenberg is a long-time Republican activist and was recently elected Finance Chairman of the Republican National Committee. He has raised millions of dollars for the Republican Party and Republican candidates. He served on New York Governor George Pataki’s transition team and was a key advisor to New Jersey Governor Christine Whitman.

He and his wife Judy have three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Henry Kravis (jew)

Henry R. Kravis (born 1944) is an American business financier and investor, notable for co-founding and heading the leading private equity firm, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR).

With an estimated current net worth of around $5.5 billion, he is ranked by Forbes as the 69th richest person in the world.[1]

The son of Bessie (Roberts) and Raymond Kravis, a successful Tulsa oil engineer who had been a business partner of Joseph P. Kennedy, Henry began his education at the Eaglebrook School followed by high school at The Loomis Chaffee School. He then majored in economics at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California [CMC is one of the biggest neocon factories in the nation; the home of king Lincoln liar, jew Harry Jaffa] and graduated in 1967 before going on to Columbia University where he received an MBA degree in 1969. [2]

After working at various jobs in New York City's financial sector, he and his first cousin, George R. Roberts, joined the staff of Bear Stearns. There, they worked under the corporate finance manager, Jerome Kohlberg, Jr.. They both became partners at Bear Stearns at a very young age, 30 and 31.

In 1976, the three men left Bear Stearns to set up their own investment company, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) where Henry Kravis helped develop the acquisition concept known as the leveraged buyout (LBO). Kravis and his associates created a series of limited partnerships to acquire various corporations, ones they judged were performing well below their sales and profit potential. In most cases, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co put up ten percent of the acquisition price from its own funds and borrowed the rest from investors by issuing high-yield bonds. [3]

In the 1980s, these high-yield bonds became known as "junk bonds." Once the targeted company was successfully taken over, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts then organized a drastic restructuring, selling off selected assets or subsidiaries and implementing a series of cost-cutting measures. The new, "leaner and more efficient" company was then resold, at a huge profit.

In 1987, Jerome Kohlberg, Jr. resigned from the firm, and Henry Kravis and George Roberts continued to lead the firm. Under Kravis and Roberts the firm was responsible for the 1988 leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco. At a cost of $31.4 billion[4], it was then the highest price ever paid for a commercial enterprise. The publicity surrounding the event led to the story being dramatized in the book and film, Barbarians at the Gate. In early 1995, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co divested its remaining holdings in RJR Nabisco.

The list of companies Henry Kravis has bought and sold over the years includes many of the great American brand names such as the health care provider HCA Inc., Texaco, Playtex, Beatrice, Safeway, Duracell, Toys R Us, Borden, and First Data, Inc.

Personal

Kravis has been married three times. His first marriage was to Helene Diane Shulman ( deceased in 1997). They had three children before their marriage ended in divorce in the early eighties. Their 19-year-old son, Harrison, was killed in an automobile accident in 1991 and he has two remaining children, Robert and Kimberly Schulhof, both of whom are now in their thirties.

He later married Jane Smith (the legal name of Carolyne Roehm) in 1985, but it ended in divorce in 1993.

Kravis is currently married to a prominent Canadian economist, Marie-Josée Drouin, a Fellow of the Hudson Institute and a former columnist and TV personality in Canada. She also sits on the boards of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Robin Hood Foundation, and is the president of the Museum of Modern Art board of directors.

Kravis currently owns homes in New York, NY; Southampton, New York; Palm Beach, Florida; Paris, France; Meeker, CO; and Sharon, CT

Politics

A supporter of Republican politics, he is a supporter and fundraiser for President George W. Bush and John McCain. He was a major contributor to the failed 1992 re-election campaign of President George H. W. Bush. In 1997, Henry Kravis joined with Lewis Eisenberg to establish the Republican Leadership Council.

War On Greed

Henry Kravis was the subject of a 'WarOnGreed.org' video which detailed his life and earnings in comparison to various citizens. The video compares the comparatively low (in percentage) capital gains tax that Kravis pays with the ordinary income tax that wage earners pay, and compares Kravis' equivalent hourly wage of over $50,000 to the annual salaries of the people interviewed in the film, many of whom do not make more than that amount per year. It also shows Kravis' multiple lavish homes, describing each of them and how much he spent on each of them, and ends by asking the interviewed people what they would do if they could live in one of Kravis' homes for the holidays.

Mark Broxmeyer (jew)

Mark Broxmeyer
National Chairman, JINSA

Mark Broxmeyer is the co-founder and partner of Fairfield Properties, a company that has raised standards in its industry and improved the quality of life for thousands of Long Island residents. Fairfield is the largest multiple housing developer/owner on Long Island, and is one of New York State’s leading real estate companies that owns and manages approximately 5,500 property units. Building this multi-million dollar enterprise from the ground up, Mark’s vision, financial acumen and negotiating skills have led to his phenomenal self-made success.

Mark is recognized not only for his hands-on business style but is also well known for his extensive community involvement on the local, national and international scenes. His accomplishments are outlined below.

As a civic and industry leader, Mark was appointed by former President Bush to the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York. Based upon his expertise and experience, New York’s Governor George Pataki appointed Mark to serve on the Board of Directors of the United Nations Development Corporation. Suffolk County District Attorney, Thomas Spota, III, named Mark the Special Advisor for Homeland Security Affairs. In addition, Mark also serves on the Board of Directors of the Long Island Builders Institute; is a Trustee at North Shore Hospital and was recently named as the Homeland Security Advisor for Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco. He also serves on the Department of Defense-Civilian Defense Experts Committee.

Understanding Mark’s vast knowledge of the private sector and his role as a leader in the business community, in September 2006, Mark was appointed by the United States Secretary of Commerce to serve as a Member of the International Trade Advisory Committee on Energy and Energy Services. In this capacity, Mark works with his colleagues to provide reports, detailed policy, technical advice, information and recommendations to both the Secretary and the United States Trade Representative on critical issues that affect U.S. trade.

In addition, Mark recently received the high honor of being asked by United States Senator John McCain to serve on the National Finance Committee of his Presidential Campaign. Mark also serves as an advisor to Senator McCain’s Presidential Campaign on Jewish Affairs.

Mark is considered an authority on Israeli security issues and currently serves as National Chairman of the highly regarded Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA). He was called to serve as Chairman of the Washington D.C. based think-tank in 2001, during a most challenging time in our history. He has since consulted with high-level security officials and diplomats from all over the world to reinforce the important strategic relationship between the United States, Israel and other key allies in promoting lasting global peace and democracy. He appears often as National Security Analyst for network and cable television news programs, radio reports and countless newspaper articles. As a tireless spokesman for security concerns, Mark hosts periodic informational forums for law enforcement officials, providing them with the most up-to-date intelligence gathered from all over the world. His dedication to this mission is unwavering.

Chairman Broxmeyer has traveled with JINSA extensively. Among his many excursions, he co-led the 2002 JINSA Trilateral Counterterrorism Conference in New Delhi, India. Mark traveled to Fort Bragg, North Carolina to visit the United States Army Special Operations Command and to Germany to Ramstein Air Base and the Headquarters of U.S. Air Forces Europe. He led a delegation to Colorado to visit the U.S. Northern Command, NORAD, the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center and the United States Air Force Academy.

In November 2005, Mark was honored with the JINSA Security Leadership Award for outstanding service to JINSA’s Law Enforcement Exchange Program with Israel (LEEP). [Translation: Learn how to terrorize and torture innocent civilians just like real jews do it.] LEEP was established in 2002 to create an opportunity for American senior level first responders to have access to counterterrorism methodologies practiced by the Israel National Police and other Israeli security agencies.

In June 2006, Mark led his 5th LEEP delegation with federal, state and local officials and Israeli officials from intelligence and security services in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as well as other sensitive locations. The head of New York State Homeland Security, Jim McMahon, and others joined Mark in a program that stressed the critical importance of information sharing when it comes to successful counterterrorism. Mark has led several delegations to Israel to meet with Israeli police and intelligence officials to discuss ideas for identifying threats at home.

Mark is Chairman of Secure Community Network (SCN), a New York City based non-profit organization that has as its two main objectives: to provide rapid information sharing in crisis situations and enhance security at Jewish organizations and institutions to protect against terrorism and other threats.

Private security initiatives like SCN work in partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and provide another level of protection against attacks on Jewish targets in America and other types of domestic terrorism. [Translation: Mark makes sure that jewish organizations get the largest shares of anti-terror security money.]

Mark has been honored as the “Man of the Year” by the United Cerebral Palsy Association and received “The JINSA Leadership Award” along with former United States Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp. [No bigger jew tool could conceivably exist than Jack Kemp] The Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center, North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Systems and the Nassau County Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center have also honored him.

Most recently, the Nassau County Shomrim Society, an organization of Jewish police officers from Nassau and Suffolk Counties, honored Mark for his commitment to local and national security.

Mark believes that success is not measured merely by mastering the art of a deal. He enjoys the rewards of his busy and successful professional career and is equally committed to achieving a balanced life - spending quality time with his family, his wife and five children and in service to his local community. Mark enjoys coaching his children’s baseball and basketball teams, practicing the martial arts, playing tennis, and participating in other activities that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

[More on jew Mark Broxmeyer]

Right Web - Exposing the architecture of power that's changing our world

Mark Broxmeyer
Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs: Chairman

As chairman since 2002 of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), Mark Broxmeyer is one of two self-made magnates helming one of the most powerful pro-Israel organizations in the United States. (JINSA's president is investment mogul Norman Hascoe.) JINSA, founded in 1976 by a group of largely neoconservative elites worried that the United States might not come to the aid of Israel in the event of a war with its neighbors, specializes in connecting former U.S. military brass with their counterparts in Israel through organized trips and meetings.

David Steinmann is chairman of JINSA's board, which is populated with a number of rightist voices, such as Anne Bayefsky, Stephen Bryen , Phyllis Kaminsky, Max Kampelman, Jack Kemp, Michael Ledeen, Joshua Muravchik, Richard Perle, and James Woolsey. The group's agenda includes pushing U.S.-Israeli weapons contracts, nurturing military-to-military relations between the two countries, and pushing a hard line on Mideast peace. As journalist Jason Vest writes, "JINSA relishes denouncing virtually any type of contact between the U.S. government and Syria and finding new ways to demonize the Palestinians."

The conservative Broxmeyer made his millions in Long Island real estate, cofounding Fairfield Properties in 1973. Since then he has also acquired and developed properties in Texas (Long Island Business News, May 20, 2005). Broxmeyer donated $2,000 to George W. Bush's 2004 presidential run and $10,000 to the Republican National Committee (FundRace.org). As far as the 2008 presidential race goes, Broxmeyer has given $2,100 to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) (Newsmeat.com). In 2006, Broxmeyer promised $1 million to his alma mater Hofstra University to endow a chair in national security studies (Hofstra Magazine, Fall 2006), but the promise seemed to sour after Broxmeyer was sued by Hofstra Law School's student law clinic on behalf of tenants of a property owned by Fairfield Properties (see EDonors.net). A few months later, Broxmeyer had not yet decided whether or not to leave his long-held post as Hofstra trustee or whether to rescind his pledge (1010 News Radio, October 7, 2006).

In late 2006, the parties reached an agreement—by which time Broxmeyer had left his post as trustee: "A millionaire real estate tycoon who recently pledged $1 million to Hofstra University only to find himself sued by Hofstra Law School's housing rights clinic has settled a dispute with Latino tenants in Farmingdale, his attorney and others said yesterday. Mark Broxmeyer, an owner of Fairfield Properties, who until last month was also a trustee at Hofstra, has agreed to provide seven families still remaining at 150 Secatogue Ave. with cash or guaranteed affordable housing for several years. The deal will cost the company at least $110,000, said Ami Lipman, a law student at the clinic. In exchange, Fairfield, a property management company, will be dropped from a federal discrimination lawsuit the law clinic filed against Farmingdale Village and the previous owner of the building, said Hofstra law professor Stefan Krieger, who filed the suit" ("Housing Bias Case Settlement," CCAF). The status of his pledge remains unclear, but as of May 2007, it does not seem that the university has an endowed chair on national security.

Broxmeyer is also an honorary board member of the nonprofit group Splashes of Hope, which funds original painted murals in hospitals to improve the atmosphere. In 2001, he was given the Community Service Award from Nassau County's Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center.

What is a PAC?
In the 1970's, in an effort to reform political campaign fundraising, Congress authorized the establishment of political action committees, or PACs. Today, over 4,000 PACs (for nearly every cause) raise money and educate Congress in the hopes of affecting public policy. Operating under strict campaign finance regulations, PACs are legitimate media through which individual citizens can direct their contributions to support federal candidates who represent their views on issues of concern to them.

I give to the UJA and other Israel causes. Why a PAC?
The answer is one word: leverage. While it is true that every dollar one gives directly to any pro-Israel organization or institution is important, no organizational fundraising effort can match the resources and generosity of the US government (organizational fundraising can be measured in hundreds of millions of dollars; US aid is measured in billions). Fundamentally, in addition to educating Members of Congress on the issues, we also work to elect and re-elect Members of Congress who support a strong US-Israel relationship in the first place. That's leverage.

How is NORPAC different from AIPAC?
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is not a political action committee. AIPAC is a registered lobbying organization that works with elected officials. Unlike political action committees, AIPAC cannot contribute to campaigns nor rate or endorse candidates. So, while AIPAC is critically important in fostering strong US support for Israel, NORPAC—which helps get supportive candidates (re)elected in the first place—has a separate and distinct role.

“What causes concern, at least among some of the more educated people in our community, is the isolationist attitude of many,” said Dr. Ben Chouake, president of NORPAC, a large pro-Israel political action committee based in New Jersey. “And they’re concerned about the 800-pound gorilla in the room — Iran. So the question is which candidates are willing to face this harsh reality and deal with it diplomatically, economically, but ultimately, you have to be ready to deal with it militarily.”

Clifford Sobel (jew)

Clifford M. Sobel (born 1949) is a U.S. diplomat and ambassador. He is currently the United States Ambassador to Brazil. He was nominated for the post by President Bush on May 23, 2006, confirmed by the Senate on June 29, and sworn in by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on July 20, 2006. He presented his credentials to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry on August 2, 2006. Ambassador Sobel is the 53rd Chief of Mission to Brazil.

Previously Sobel was the 62nd Ambassador of the United States to the Netherlands. President George W. Bush nominated him on July 3, 2001 and he was sworn in by Secretary of State Colin Powell on November 8, 2001. On December 5, 2001, he presented his credentials to Her Majesty Queen Beatrix.

Education

Sobel attended the University of Vermont and graduated with honors from New York University's School of Commerce with the Bachelor of Science degree in management. In 1999, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from Kean University in recognition of his public service contribution.

Business career

During the 1970s and 80s, he founded and later became Chairman of several companies that designed, manufactured and imported fixtures in retail environments. These companies became some of the fastest growing and most innovative in the industry, and were awarded the Sears Chairman's Award, and numerous design awards under Sobel's management. Sobel had previously worked as Chairman of Net2Phone, the largest provider of Internet telephone service. Recently, Net2Phone formed a joint venture with Cisco, and Sobel became co-chairman of that newly formed company called ADIR.

Public appointments

By Presidential appointment Sobel served on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in Washington D.C. between 1994 through 1998. From 1987-1989, he was appointed to the U.S. Government Industry Sector International Trade Board. He was on the advisory boards of Empower America and the Republican Leadership Council, and served on the board and as a member of the policy committee of Business Executives for National Security (BENS). In 1995, he was asked to testify before Congress on fast-track international trade treaties, and from 1993 to 1997, he served as a Secretary of Defense appointment to the Board of Visitors of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

Republican Party work

He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1996 and in 2000, and served on the Platform Committee and the Sub-Committee on Foreign Policy in 2000. He served as the New Jersey financial chairman of the primary and presidential campaigns for then-Governor George W. Bush. In 1998, he accompanied Governor Bush on a fact-finding mission to Israel.

Think tanks

He was on the board of the Lexington Institute. Prior to this he served as Chairman of the Board Overseer of the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution.

Jay Zeidman (jew)

Zeidman’s father is Houston Republican Fred Zeidman, who is chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and one of Bush’s closest donors.

[Zeidman has been the] White House liaison to the Jewish community, a post falling under the jurisdiction of the Office of Public Liaison.

[Does the Office of Public Liaison have a liaison to the White community? I mean, Whites are openly discriminated against under federal law: surely the White community must have somebody officially advocating its interests?]

He was, after all, the first Jewish president of the student body at Texas Christian University, where in 2005 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and political science.

“There was a student board made up of all different religious faiths and I was responsible for leading Holocaust Remembrance Week,” he says. “I knew what the Holocaust meant as a Jew, but how to make it meaningful for students of different faiths was the challenge.”

His own Jewish identity was largely shaped by the regular Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations at his parents’ home. Growing up in Houston, the third of Kay and Fred Zeidman’s four children, he attended private school and the Hebrew school of his neighborhood Reform synagogue. Zeidman and his older brother both celebrated their bar mitzvahs on Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem.
