Concern as hate group emerges at city protests

A SELF-PROCLAIMED racial hate group that associates itself with the violent Greek Golden Dawn Party has held two protests in the city, it has emerged, writes Colin Cortbus.

Student supporters of the West Midlands-based National Action, which claims to exist to raise awareness of supposed problems to the nation, gatecrashed a feminist protest at Warwick University on January 15.

It was believed to be the first activity by overt Neo-Nazis for many years on a British university campus although the university denied any knowledge of the protest when we contacted them.

And just days later on February 1 National Action organised a flash mob demonstration in the city centre with banners emblazoned with the words 'National action – national and socialist'.

Members of the group protested outside the new Frangos restaurant on Corporation Street, claiming they were deceiving customers by serving halal meat, which the group claim is unfit for British people.

A spokesman for the chain confirmed the presence of protesters but declined to comment any further.

The recent protests come as a concern to Sam Westrop who is the director of Stand for Peace, an interfaith and counter-extremism group that investigates radicalism.

He told the Observer: “The emergence of National Action, its undisguised racism and declared alignment with fascist movements in Greece and elsewhere, is an alarming development.

“There have been very few instances of far-right activism on university campuses but that seems to be changing.

“University authorities must keep an eye out for far-right movements and act without hesitation if they promote hatred or incite violence.

“Campus extremism is already a serious problem for many, and the addition of far-right operatives to the mix possibly presents a violent and unpleasant future.”

According to the website, National Action are seeking for real political change by establishing a firm ideological foundation to claim Nationalism.

They link themselves with the Greek Golden Dawn Party who have been described as racist and fascist and have been accused of carrying out acts of violence against immigrants, political opponents and ethnic minorities.

These latest revelations are likely to lead to serious concerns regarding the activities of neo-Nazis at British Universities and will also raise fears about student safety at Warwick University.
