Hundreds march in Latvia to commemorate SS unit

March participants honoring countrymen who fought in German combat unit during WWII sing patriotic songs, wave Latvian flags. Protesters chant 'Disgrace!' and 'Hitler is dead!'' in Russian, blow whistles to drown out singing

Thousands marched through the Latvian capital Sunday under heavy police protection to honor countrymen who fought in a German combat unit during World War II.

Protesters jeered as the procession of some 3,000 people - a few surviving members of the Waffen SS unit known as the Latvian Legion among them - arrived at the Freedom Monument in downtown Riga.

March participants sang patriotic songs and waved Latvian flags before laying roses at the base of the monument as protesters chanted "Disgrace!'' and "Hitler is dead!'' in Russian and blew whistles to drown out the singing.

Thousands of police deployed to prevent unrest kept the two sides apart. No violence was reported.

Soviet forces occupied the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in June 1940, but were driven out by the Germans a year later. The Red Army retook the Baltics in 1944, and reincorporated them into the Soviet Union.

About 250,000 Latvians ended up fighting alongside either the Germans or the Soviets in World War II -- and some 150,000 Latvians died in the fighting.

Default Mussolini is one of the official heroes of Latvia

Benito Mussolini is one of the official heroes of Latvia, said Sergey Malakhovskiy, the member of the Antifascist Committee of Latvia during the press conference in Moscow on March, 12, reports a REGNUM correspondent.

According to Malakhovskiy, the name of Mussolini is among other names lettered at the plaques in the “pantheon of Latvian heroes”. In reply to the request of REGNUM correspondent to detail about the “pantheon” and what attitude toward nowdays Latvia has the Italian dictator, the member of the Latvian Anti-fascist Committee said: "Pantheon of Latvian heroes is a Memorial Complex in the Fraternal Cemetery in Riga, where at the memorial plaques are lettered the names of chevaliers of the Order of Lacplesis — the highest military award of Latvia. In due course, the Order was awarded to some leaders of states, participants of World War II being allies of Germany. I am not aware if Hitler had been awarded by the Order, but Mussolini was awarded in 1925. His name is in the plaque. And like this Benito Mussolini is caught in the circle of the heroes of Latvia, — said Sergey Malakhovsky.

As informed REGNUM earlier, the minister of culture of Latvia considers average the perpetuation of memory of Benito Mussolini at the main memorial complex of the country. “More dangerous is the Victory Monument in the center of Riga”, -said Helena Demakova, Latvian Culture Minister. According to her, it would be necessary to demolish the Victory Monument in Riga and after it Latvian Shooters Monument, because these objects “mangle the historical truth”. "It is the best glorification of the criminal regimes, than looking for the names of Mussolini and Weiss at the cemetery with magniglass”.

It is worth mentioning that there are memorial plaques of chevaliers of the Order of Lacplesis at the Memorial Complex of the Fraternal Cemetery in Riga. The name of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini is among other names lettered at these plaques. The central grave sites the memorial of general-lieutenant of SS troops Gruppenführer Rudolf Bangerskis and one of the operators of mass shootings of civilians in 1941-1942 Voldemars Weiss.

It WAS in 1925 - and it's clear and obvious that in this time - Mussolini was ordinary dictator.

City Council bans Legionnaires Day events

http://www.baltictimes.com/news/articles/25039/

RIGA -- The Riga City Council has introduced a complete ban on events surrounding the Freedom Monument during this year's Legionnaires Day, which takes place on March 16.

The day has previously been used by former soldiers from the Latvian Legion to remember their fellow warriors who fell during the second World War. The Latvian Legion fought against Soviet forces on the side of Nazi Germany.

The former soldiers have in the past marked the day by laying wreaths of flowers at the Freedom Monument.

A demonstration is usually organized by various pro-Russian organizations against the ceremony, which they consider as tacit support for the Nazi regime.

Last year about 13 people protesting the event were detained by police. Some members of the demonstration were seen unfurling a Communist flag - a banned symbol in Latvia.

The ban comes during the city's first stint with with a pre-Russian rights party at the helm of the City Council.

A total of 140,000 people were called up to form the Latvian Legion and about 50,000 of them died in the war or deportations following the restoration of Soviet rule in Latvia.

In 1950 Washington published a declaration about Baltic SS legions having being special units to be distinguished from other German SS troops and not regarded as movements harmful to the United States government.

I wish we had laws like that, (hate speech, public display, holocaust denial,...etc, etc).
Thousands of us could intentionally violate such laws and force ZOG prosecutors to have to deal with us.
We could tie up the court system for years and frustrate the hell out of judges, politicians, and bureaucrats.

Hundreds in Latvia commemorate Waffen SS units

http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_...&lang=eng_news

2010-03-16 08:00 PM

About 1,000 people have honored Latvians who were killed fighting on the side of Nazi Germany during World War II.

Hundreds of police kept dozens of angry ethnic Russian protesters at bay during the annual march commemorating Latvia's Waffen SS divisions.

Participants laid flowers and sang patriotic songs at the Freedom Monument in downtown Riga, while protesters waved banners with gruesome pictures of the Holocaust and shouted insults.

Latvians who take part in the annual procession claim they want to commemorate compatriots killed in the war, while ethnic Russian protesters accuse them of whitewashing history and having Nazi sympathies. Police said there was no violence at Tuesday's procession.

Default Soviet WWII veteran loses Strasbourg court case against Latvia

Soviet WWII veteran loses Strasbourg court case against Latvia

http://en.rian.ru/russia/20100517/159047560.html

A former Soviet partisan who was convicted by a Latvian court for war crimes, has lost his case against Latvian authorities in the upper chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.

The Grand Chamber upheld the appeal by Latvia against the Strasbourg court's 2008 ruling that the conviction by Latvian authorities of Vasily Kononov, 87, was illegal.

Kononov, who led a group of resistance fighters against Nazi Germany in the Baltic state during World War II, was convicted of ordering the killing of nine villagers in 1944. He admitted to the killings, but said the dead were Nazi collaborators who were caught in crossfire.

The veteran was arrested in 1998 and held for two years in custody. After his release, Kononov received Russian citizenship and in 2004 he appealed to the Strasbourg Court.

The Strasbourg Court ruled in 2008 that Latvian authorities violated the European Convention on Human Rights prescribing that "no person may be punished for an act that was not a criminal offense at the time of its commission."

It ordered 30,000 euros ($38,000) in compensation to the former partisan. Latvia's government then appealed the ruling.

"The Grand Chamber's judgment passed by 14 votes to three states that Article 7 of the Convention was not violated," the president of the European Court of Human Rights, Jean-Paul Costa, said.

Kononov's lawyer told Russian journalists he will insist on a retrial.

"The facts that the court states from the first reading are inconsistent with the materials of the case and the circumstances of what had actually happened. It is a pity that the European court is politicized," Mikhail Ioffe said.

Latvia parade set to celebrate Nazi invasion

Nazi-hunter Efraim Zuroff: To celebrate the anniversary of the Nazi invasion is to celebrate the mass murder of the Nazi's victims in Latvia.

A parade to commemorate the day Nazi troops marched into Latvia during World War II is set to proceed on Thursday after a court on Tuesday overturned an earlier ban on the event.

‘Peed in public, behave like occupiers’: Latvian mayor complains about NATO sailors

Quote:
Crewmembers of NATO warships deployed to the Latvian port city of Ventspils are behaving like occupying forces, who don’t consider local laws apply to them, the mayor of the city charged. This discredits the alliance in the eyes of Latvians, he added.

“NATO sailors in Ventspils were behaving like pigs, ignored Latvian laws and municipal rules,” Aivars Lembergs told LETA news agency. “Drunk, they urinated in public, right on shop windows, vomited, drank in public, which is not allowed. They picked flowers from flowerbeds and gave them to prostitutes.”

Lembergs, a vocal critic of Latvia’s cooperation with NATO, added that the foreign military personnel “behaved like occupiers, who do not recognize Latvia’s sovereignty.”

The unflattering description comes as the mayor was commenting on an incident in Ventspils, in which several NATO sailors clashed with locals at a night club last weekend. One of the sailors, a 21-year-old Dutch national, sustained serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital with several broken face bones and a concussion.

The mayor alleged that the Latvian participants of the fight were simply protecting local women from harassment by the visitors. He added that since NATO warships arrived in Ventspils, the number of misdemeanor reports in the city has skyrocketed.
It is twice as large now as it was during the resent Day of the City celebration, when some 13,000 people flocked into Ventspils.

The number of visiting NATO troops is about 90.

The mayor said he is going to send a letter of complaint about the situation to NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

There are 26 military ships from NATO and the EU currently visiting Ventspils to take part in Open Spirit, an annual NATO naval exercise in the Baltic Sea.

Lembergs, who has led the Latvian port city since 1988, previously objected to the presence of NATO troops in Ventspils, comparing it to inviting Soviet troops into the independent Latvia in 1940.

The incident in Ventspils was one of several fights involving NATO troops in Latvia lately. In the capital, Riga, four American soldiers clashed with taxi drivers after returning on the morning of April 25 from a night party. The conflict was sparked by an argument over payment for the ride, according to Latvian media.

Latvian Foreign Minister Rinkevics ‘Proud to be Gay’

(AGI/EFE) Moscow, Nov 7 — Latvian foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics on Friday announced that he is gay in a tweet posted in English. “I proudly announce I am gay… good luck all of you,” the 41-year-old wrote. “Our country has to create a legal status for all kinds of partner relationships,” he added. The announcement was praised by the country’s president, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who described Rinkevics as “a brave man and a good foreign minister.”

A Latvian MP has been forced resign her position in the ruling party leadership after sparking a scandal with gay-hating comments she published on Twitter.

Inga Priede landed in hot water after crossing the line in an online debate with fellow Unity party members on the possible legislation of same-sex partnerships.

The issue of gay rights is a hot topic in Latvia after last week’s coming out by Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs and a similar move by UK’s Charge d’Affaires in Riga, Iain Frew.

Priede stated that all Latvian countryfolk are “in shock” after learning about the draft law and rural gays “are not proud” of their sexual orientation “because there are basic values.”

She went further, tweeting: “Thank God! The Germans shot them in their time. Was good for demographics,” an apparent reference to the Nazi Germans’ campaign to “improve the nation” through the extermination of citizens deemed unfit to be part of it, including homosexuals.
