U.S. pushes for Saudi progress on Khashoggi probe before anniversary of killing

Stephen Kalin, Matt Spetalnick

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration is pressing Saudi Arabia to show “tangible progress” toward holding to account those behind the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and wants them to do so before the one-year anniversary of his murder, a senior administration official said.
(...)
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Saudis needed to complete their investigation and take action ahead of the anniversary but did not specify any consequences if they failed to do so. The Trump administration has so far taken only minimal steps.

Sister of Saudi's MBS to faces trial in France after ordering bodyguard to beat up worker

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sister is set to face trial in France next month after she was accused of ordering her bodyguard to beat up a worker.

Princess Hassa bint Salman is unlikely to appear at the trial scheduled to take place in Paris on July 9, according to news agency AFP, because she left the country amid the accusations.
(...)
The worker took a photo of a room where the work was set to be done, prompting the princess to accuse of trying to sell the image to the media, Sky News reported.

“Kill him, the dog, he doesn't deserve to live,” she yelled as she ordered her bodyguard to attack the workman.

The victim claims he was punched in the face while his hands were tied. He also said he was forced to kiss the princess’s feet. Only hours later, he was allowed to leave the property, though his tools were confiscated and he had to take eight days off work.

The Saudi "royals" are utter scum. I can certainly see why so many people think that they're crypto-jews.

Saudi crown prince linked to Khashoggi murder in U.N. report

Stephanie Nebehay, Stephen Kalin

GENEVA/RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other senior officials should be investigated over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi given credible evidence against them, a U.N. rights investigator said on Wednesday.

Khashoggi’s death stirred widespread disgust and hurt the image of the prince, previously admired in the West for pushing to end the kingdom’s oil dependence and easing social restrictions including by allowing women to drive.

After a six-month investigation, the 100-page report by the U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, Agnes Callamard, accused Saudi Arabia of a “deliberate, premeditated execution”.

“There is sufficient credible evidence regarding the responsibility of the crown prince demanding further investigation,” Callamard said.

In Riyadh, a minister rejected the report as having nothing new and containing “baseless allegations.”

What’s going on between Lindsay Lohan and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia?

By Oli Coleman
August 5, 2019

What the heck is going on with Lindsay Lohan and Mohammad bin Salman?

A wild rumor hit town that Lohan and the bloodthirsty crown prince of Saudi Arabia have gotten close, and that he’s been flying her around in his jets and showering her with presents — including a gift-wrapped credit card. And when we started asking around, a source in her inner circle acknowledged that they “know each other.”

Now a rep for Lohan tells us that the pair met just once — around a year ago at a Formula One Grand Prix race. The rep also denied that bin Salman — who has been accused of ordering the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi — gave Lohan a credit card.

Either way, pals of Lohan — who even say they’ve seen text exchanges between the pair — are boasting about what they claim is a new friendship. The rep called those claims “lies.”

While the “Herbie: Fully Loaded” star and the vicious authoritarian would seem to make for an unlikely twosome, sources close to Lohan, who has been partly based in nearby Dubai for the past couple of years, told Page Six that it’s not unusual for the “Rumors” singer to be courted by Middle Eastern dignitaries.

Saudi prince seeks to dodge blame for Khashoggi killing: U.N. expert

Stephanie Nebehay

GENEVA (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia’s crown prince is trying to repair damage to his image done by Jamal Khashoggi’s murder by insisting “layers and layers” of hierarchy separated him from the Saudi agents who killed the journalist, the U.N. investigator told Reuters.

Mohammad bin Salman told CBS program “60 Minutes” that as de facto Saudi leader he ultimately bore “full responsibility” for the killing a year ago, but he denied ordering it. He made similar remarks to U.S. broadcaster PBS.
(…)
In an interview with Reuters, Agnes Callamard, U.N. expert on summary executions, attributed his remarks to a “strategy of rehabilitation in the face of public outrage around the world”.

“He is creating a distance between himself, he is exonerating himself from direct criminal responsibility in the killing. He is creating layers, and layers and layers of actors and institutions which are protecting him from his direct accountability for the killing.”

Saudi Arabia courts Hollywood in its push to create a world-class film industry

By Paula Froelich
October 12, 2019

Aquaman and other Tinseltown heroes will arrive in Saudia Arabia Sunday to help the kingdom — and themselves — get a bit richer, as officials promote their $64 billion push to create a world-class film industry.

Jason Momoa, who plays the DC Comics character on the big screen, flew into Riyadh Saturday night along with Jackie Chan and Jean Claude van Damme — the first time Hollywood A-listers have visited the country since Jamal Khashoggi’s savage murder in 2018, The Post has learned.

They’ll participate at a conference organized by Saudi’s General Entertainment Authority called the Joy Forum, which backers said “will bring together industry-leading global entertainment pioneers interested in investment and growth opportunities in the kingdom’s entertainment sector.”

Inside Lindsay Lohan’s Bizarre Friendship With Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

The actress’ father says his daughter has a “platonic and respectful” friendship with the unpredictable Saudi royal.

Tom Sykes

Updated 10.31.19 4:54PM ET / Published 10.30.19 7:52AM ET

Lindsay Lohan has many qualities, but, let’s be honest, she has never been noted for her impeccable judgment.

Even by Lohan’s standards, one cannot help but wonder what the party-hearty former child star, who until recently ran a bar on a Greek island for an MTV reality show, could see in the billionaire potentate Mohammed bin Salman.

Indeed, ever since rumors first started to emerge of a friendship between Lilo and MBS—reports claimed they’ve become text buddies and that the Saudi ruler has been flying the actress around the world by private jet and even gave her a gift-wrapped credit card—students of Hollywood-Middle Eastern relations have wrestled with the question of what their after-dinner chats might comprise.

MBS’ kingdom adheres to an austere and repressive Muslim ideology and only recently allowed women to drive. Its operatives, he was forced to admit, brutally murdered and dismembered The Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Russia Blasts U.S. Sending Troops to Saudi Arabia, Saying 'Are They Going to Fight Someone or What?'

By Tom O'Connor On 11/20/19 at 2:31 PM EST

ussia has condemned the United States' plan to send troops to Saudi Arabia, a decision likely to be seen as a provocation by rival Iran.

Amid reports that President Donald Trump informed lawmakers earlier this week that the Pentagon would be maintaining some 3,000 personnel in Saudi Arabia, Russian presidential envoy for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov warned that "this is just an escalation of tensions," according to the state-run Tass Russian News Agency. The move, which came amid a U.S.-led campaign to isolate and constrain the revolutionary Shiite Islamic Republic, prompted the diplomat to ask: "Are they going to fight someone or what?"

Russia has pushed back against a growing U.S. military presence in the Persian Gulf region, where Washington and Tehran have accused one another of fostering instability. Instead, Moscow has joined Tehran in pushing for cooperation among regional powers to curb growing unrest in the Strait of Hormuz, the world's top seaborne oil route.

‘Cross our red lines & be destroyed’: Iran’s elite IRGC chief warns US, Israel and Saudi Arabia at large pro-govt rally

25 Nov, 2019

All external foes will be defeated if they make moves against Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander warned at a massive pro-government rally amid protests over fuel price hikes.
Major General Hossein Salami addressed people in downtown Tehran on Monday. He said that the country’s rivals are “no longer capable of anything” in their attacks against the nation.

“We have shown patience towards the hostile moves of America, the Zionist regime [Israel] and Saudi Arabia against the Islamic Republic of Iran... but we will destroy them if they cross our red lines.”

Thousands have marched on the streets of the country’s capital and gathered on the Enqelan Square (Revolution Square). Calling themselves the ‘Supporters of the Leadership’, the demonstrators waved national flags, carried placards and chanted slogans in support for the Supreme Leader Ali Khanemei and the current government. Some were also seen burning American flags.

Saudi Arabia’s explanation about the death of a dissident journalist is not credible but the UK is not preparing to terminate it relationship with the state, a Cabinet minister has said.

Saudi Arabia detains senior royals for alleged coup plot, including king's brother: sources

Stephen Kalin, Marwa Rashad

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has detained three senior Saudi princes including Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, the younger brother of King Salman, and Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the king’s nephew, for allegedly planning a coup, sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, King Salman’s son and de facto ruler of the country, the world’s top oil exporter and a key U.S. ally, has moved to consolidate power since ousting Mohammed bin Nayef as heir to the throne in a 2017 palace coup.

Later that year, he arrested several royals and other prominent Saudis, holding them for months at Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel in an anti-corruption campaign that caused shockwaves at home and abroad.

Senior Saudi religious leader set for ‘groundbreaking’ visit to Auschwitz Thurs.

Saudi prince’s ally Mohammed al-Issa, other Muslim religious leaders and AJC officials also slated to tour a Jewish museum and a mosque in Warsaw, share a Shabbat meal

A senior Saudi religious leader is slated to visit the Auschwitz death camp in Poland on Thursday ahead of the 75th anniversary of its liberation by the Soviet Red Army.

Mohammed al-Issa, the secretary-general of the Mecca-based Muslim World League (MWL) and a former Saudi justice minister, is scheduled to arrive at Auschwitz alongside Muslim religious leaders from more than 24 countries and a delegation of American Jewish Committee (AJC) officials.

AJC CEO David Harris said the trip represented “the most senior delegation of Muslim religious leaders to visit Auschwitz ever.”

In first, umbrella US Jewish group sends delegation to Saudi Arabia

BY RON KAMPEAS FEBRUARY 13, 2020 2:49 PM

NEW YORK (JTA) — A delegation of members of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations visited Saudi Arabia this week, a first for the umbrella body for U.S. Jews. It’s believed to be the first official visit to the kingdom by an American Jewish organization since 1993.

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency has learned that the visit from Monday to Thursday included meetings with senior Saudi officials, as well as with Mohammed al-Issa, the secretary-general of the Muslim World League who recently led a delegation to Auschwitz. Al-Issa is seen as close to Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince.
(...)
The visit signals what could be an increasing warmness between some mainstream U.S. Jewish groups and Saudi Arabia.

The latter has come under fire in recent years for cracking down on dissidents. Saudi agents in 2018 brutally murdered Jamal Khashoggi, a U.S. resident and Saudi national who had become critical of the regime, when he was visiting Istanbul.

But Saudi Arabia has also forged closer informal ties with Israel in recent years.

The UK government has revealed that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will become the acting prime minister as the “designated survivor” if Boris Johnson is hit by the deadly coronavirus, much to the dismay of many of Raab’s critics.

A Downing Street spokesperson stressed on Monday that Johnson was in good health but, in the event he did fall victim to the virus, Raab – as “the first secretary of state” – would take temporary charge of the country.

U.S.-Saudi oil alliance idea born at White House, put on back burner for now

Timothy Gardner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top U.S. officials have for now put aside a proposal for an alliance with Saudi Arabia to manage the global oil market, according to three sources with knowledge of the matter, an idea one of them said came from White House national security advisers.

That the concept was even considered at high levels reflects both the depth of the crisis facing the global oil industry as well as its growing importance to the U.S. economy. A few weeks ago, proposals for Washington to work together with oil producers to curb supply to the global market would have been dismissed for violating U.S. antitrust laws.

But prices for oil LCOc1 have slumped to an 18-year low because of the twin hits of the coronavirus pandemic slashing energy demand and a price war between top producers Saudi Arabia and Russia, threatening higher-cost U.S. and global drillers with bankruptcy.

Saudi Arabia to take on billions in debt to survive the oil price crisis

25 Apr, 2020 11:54

Saudi Arabia may have to borrow as much as $58 billion this year to cover a budget shortfall caused by the oil price slump, Bloomberg reports, citing Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan.

Al-Jadaan told media this week that the Kingdom might issue bonds worth $26.57 billion (100 billion riyals) this year in addition to an earlier issue of $31.88 billion (120 billion riyals) worth of debt.

Saudi Aramco, for its part, is considering a $10 billion sale in part of its pipeline business, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

“The kingdom went through similar crises in its history – maybe even worse – and was able to pass through them,” Al-Jadaan said. “This is not an exception.”

Most observers note that this price crisis is like no other in history. The unique combination of excess supply and a 30 percent drop in demand weighs heavily on oil-dependent economies throughout the world, and even low-cost Saudi Arabia is not exempt.
