Perhaps they should take the minimum step of LABELLING halal and kosher food to try and prevent this in the future.I know they said it was "like a yellow star on their food" but this would help them, surely? They should consider it. I see no harm in labelling it. I mean, if we need big bold letters stating "WARNING - May contain nuts" on every jar of peanut butter, I shouldn't like them to be misled as to their future consumption. I really don't know why they're against it.

A far-right group has been accused of exploiting animal rights concerns in Skegness to push its ideology.

The BNP were expected to hold their latest protest outside the halal abattoir in Heath Road today (Saturday).

The protest is one of several that have taken place outside the abattoir following the news that the business would carry out halal slaughter - a religious ritual which has its roots in Islam.

Traditional slaughter sees animals killed by a bolt to the brain - a supposedly near instantaneous death which is seen by some as more humane, although there is debate as to how swift and successful such slaughter is at minimising an animal’s distress.

Halal slaughter, meanwhile, involves slitting an animal’s throat and draining it of blood, and is required by practising Muslims.

This has aroused animal rights concerns among some in the local community and led to campaigns against this type of slaughter.

THe BNP has voiced its support for these local campaigns and also held protests of its own outside the abattoir.

But a local anti-fascist group has now slammed the BNP’s protests and accused them of making an opportunistic attempt to push their right-wing ideology, and of hijacking genuine animal rights concerns in the local area.

The East Midlands Anti-Fascists (EMAF) made the attack this morning to coincide with the protest.

“The fascist British National Party will hold a demonstration outside Skegness’ halal slaughterhouse today. In the absence of a genuine animal rights movement, the BNP is exploiting the real concern of local people about the treatment of animals for its own racist and divisive political agenda,” said a spokesperson for EMAF.

“The BNP only campaign against halal slaughter, not the almost identical kosher slaughter or animal rights abuses committed by white British farmers, because they have identified racism against Asian Muslims as a vote winner.

“Genuine animal rights activists, such as Bristol Animal Rights Collective, have called the focus on halal slaughter “a sign of racial and cultural discrimination” and stated that they “hope [fascists] will be shown that they’re not welcome in Skegness or the animal liberation movement!

“The BNP’s supposed stance against animal cruelty is hypocrisy. The party has given active support to fox hunting in the past.

When the Hunting Bill banning the hunting of foxes with dogs was given the Royal Ascent, the BNP announced that “BNP supporters were devastated by the news” calling fox hunting “a sport which has an important role to play”.

“The BNP is only interested in recruiting people and winning votes, not the plight of animals.

“Unlike the BNP, East Midlands Anti-fascists are opposed to all animal cruelty. We do not make distinctions based on the ethnic or religious background of the perpetrators.

“We want to shut down the Skegness slaughterhouse and all factory farming. We also want to shut down the anti-working class policies of the BNP,” they added.

What would be the point in standing outside a halal slaughterhouse and protesting about kosher?


Whilst to all intents and purposes they are the same thing, as evidenced by the fact that both will eat both, very few ordinary members of the public know that.

Seeing as the EMAF are so concerned about halal and kosher slaughter and in fact all animal abuse, I expect to see some protests from them on these issues.

WARSAW - Despite lobbying by 63 international animal rights groups, Poland's parliament looks set to reject the effort of the opposition Palikot Movement to get kosher slaughter banned and will amend the law on protecting animals to allow ritual slaughter.

Poland would thus avoid the example of Sweden, Norway and Switzerland, which have made shehitah - slaughter under rabbinic law - illegal.

Shehitah forbids stunning an animal before slaughtering. The European Convention for the Protection of Animals for Slaughter, which went into effect on January 1, requires the stunning of farm animals before slaughter but allows member states to allow exemptions for religious practices.

Although the debate in the Sejm, the Polish parliament, is not over, legal experts say the legislature is almost certain to make a final decision before Passover in favor of ritual slaughter. Agriculture Minister Stanislaw Kalemba has announced that he supports kosher slaughter and has argued for it in parliament.

Shehitah will be conditioned on the slaughter taking place in slaughterhouses subject to inspection.

Poland's constitution does not allow the killing of animals without stunning them beforehand, but in 2004 the agriculture minister at the time issued a permit for both Jewish and Muslim ritual slaughter, and for years no one expressed objections.

In late November, however, Poland's Constitutional Court, responding to a petition by animal rights groups, ruled that the 2004 directive was unconstitutional.

The court ruling united Poland's small Jewish and Muslim communities in their calls to protect religious freedom. The religious groups also have the firm backing of farmers for whom the production of kosher and halal meat for export is a major source of income.

The RSPCA has voiced fears that swans are being killed to be eaten after a pair were found shot with a high-powered crossbow.

The male and female swans, who have mated for life, were discovered in a river with the one foot long wooden bolts speared into their bodies.

The male survived the attack but the body of the female swan was found on the River Stour at Throop, near Bournemouth, Dorset.




An RSPCA officer and four firemen managed to rescue the male mute swan but were unable to catch his terrified partner, which later died.

An X-ray later showed the bolt and metal arrow-head had lodged five inches into the male bird's body, missing his heart by a fraction of an inch.

He underwent surgery to remove the missile and is now recovering.

RSPCA inspector Graham Hammond said: ‘It is educated guesswork but I don't believe this is the work of thugs looking for their kicks because they would normally use stones or catapults.


‘It is possible that someone who is non-British may have considered these swans to be food.

‘In Britain swans are revered and are heavily protected. I suspect that this has been carried out by someone who is not aware of their status.

‘This was a sophisticated, high-powered crossbow that would have had to have been concealed so not to arouse suspicion.

‘Swans aren't far removed from a goose or turkey, a big bird with a lot of meat on them. I suspect the intention of the offenders was to remove them.

The male swan was found with the bolt embedded in its back while the female had the arrow in her side, close to the waterline.

He said: ‘I saw bolts in both of them. Myself and four firemen in dry suits waded into the river and we managed to catch the male, although the bolt snapped in two.

‘We spent about three hours trying to catch the female but she was terrified and wouldn't let us near her.

‘The male was X-rayed and he was hit in the back and it came within a few milimetres of his heart.

‘He underwent surgery under general anesthetic to remove the 10cm long broken section of the bolt.

‘It is particularly sad because the swans have been on this territory for a number of years.'

The male swan has now recovered well enough to be released back into the wild again. Mr Hammond added: 'The male will be pining for the female.

'It sounds a bit extreme, but we may have to show the male the female's body so that he knows what has happened. Hopefully he will find another mate.'

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to kill, injure or harm a wild bird and the penalty for killing or injuring a swan carries a fine of up to £5,000 and six months in prison.

In Britain all swans are a protected species owned by the Queen and until 1998 it was considered treason to kill a swan. But in parts of Eastern Europe they are considered a delicacy.

Mr Hammond said the RSPCA will examine the broken arrow for DNA and cross-reference any sample with the police database in a bid to catch the offender.

It is not the first time a swan has been targetted to be killed for the table.

Last year there was a spate of swan attacks in Lincoln and one involved a swan being bludgeoned to death with nail-embedded sticks by a group of five men.

The RSPCA believed the motive was to remove the bird to eat it.

A drugs baron jailed for trying to smuggle £35million worth of cocaine into Britain is suing his prison for not giving him kosher food.

Orthodox Jew Simon Price, 68, is accusing the prison service of 'institutionalised anti-Semitism' and alleges that both Muslim and vegetarian criminals get more favourable treatment behind bars.

The career criminal is serving 28 years after being found guilty of smuggling 700kg of cocaine hidden inside drums of syrup.


Price alleges he was not given any choice about the food he was served in HMP Frankland, near Durham, in his claim brought under the Human Rights Act and equality legislation.

He claims that although prisoners are allowed to cook for themselves in the jail he had to share saucepans and other utensils that are used to prepare non-Kosher food.

The cocaine smuggler, who is demanding £2,500 in 'exemplary damages', also claims that the prison have failed to provide Jewish books in their library.



He accuses them in the claim of an 'indifferent and discriminatory attitude adopted towards Jews at HMP Frankland which consciously or subconsciously reflects institutionalised anti-semitism', The Sun reported.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said: 'We are robustly defending all elements of the claim.'


HMP Frankland is a Category A prison which holds around 750 offenders. Previous inmates have included Charles Bronson and Dr Harold Shipman.

Price was jailed in 2005 after a jury heard how he smuggled a cocaine haul from Guyana, South America,to Rotterdam.

It was there that the drugs were seized by Revenue and Customs officers before he could get them into Britain. The drugs baron was living in a chateau in south-west France at the time and renting out flats in north London.

The court heard that he had previously served 12 years for his role in a £1.5million armed robbery at Heathrow in the 1970s.

He had apparently turned his back on crime by 2000 and had set up a cordon bleu cookery college and tried his hand at cognac production before he was persuaded to try and smuggle cocaine.

Price has launched his claim after justice secretary Chris Grayling announced plans to stop prisoners using legal aid to sue.

The minister said he had been 'appalled' that taxpayers money was being used to allow prisoners to bring 'unnecessary legal cases' which could be dealt with by the prison service's internal complaints system.

Announcing a consultation on the plans the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said they would annually save £4 million and cut the number of cases brought by prisoners by 11,000.

The proposal comes days after reforms to legal aid came into effect as the Government moves to reduce its £2.2 billion legal aid bill by £350 million.

Halal lamb burgers have been withdrawn from a city's schools after tests revealed a sample contained pork.

The decision follows DNA tests on a batch of frozen burgers manufactured by Doncaster-based Paragon Quality Foods Limited in January, Leicester Council said today.

Assistant city mayor Vi Dempster said: "I am appalled by this situation. It is disgraceful that none of us can have confidence in the food we eat.

"We regret any distress this will cause families and staff, and would like to reassure them that robust action is being taken to address this serious matter."

Trevor Pringle, Leicester City Council's director of young people's services, said: "We understand that since March 1 this year, the product supplier, Paragon Quality Foods Limited, has only been releasing product to customers after obtaining negative DNA results for pork.

"However, as a precautionary measure we have removed all of the burgers we had in stock from this supplier whilst further investigation is carried out, and we will not be purchasing any further products from this supplier.

"We have made it clear to our suppliers that this is totally unacceptable, and we are taking urgent legal advice about the next steps."

All other Halal products used in the council's kitchens - including 24 city schools - are supplied by another company, the council said.

They have been DNA-tested and found to be compliant, the authority added.

Suleman Nagdi, from the Federation of Muslim Organisations (FMO), said: "The community will be extremely shocked and distressed to learn of the contamination that has taken place.

"The FMO is working closely with the local authority and calling on them to take legal action in respect of this contamination and would urge the local authority to instigate criminal proceedings against the company involved under the Food Safety Act.

"The FMO feel that such a prosecution would be in the public interest and would send a clear message to all businesses in this sector that contamination will not be tolerated."

The Food Standards Agency and Doncaster Metropolitan Council have launched their own investigations and further tests will be taken of the remaining stock, Leicester City Council said.

Adrian Russell, the council's director of environmental and enforcement services, said: "The city council is pressing the relevant authorities to investigate this matter as rigorously as possible. Food fraud is a serious offence and those responsible should face the full force of the law."

The council said it has contacted the headteachers of the schools potentially affected to advise them of the action being taken.

It has written to parents of children at the schools concerned and meetings have also taken place with Muslim city councillors.

In a statement issued today, Paragon Quality Foods said it had "never knowingly bought or handled pork" and it was working with the relevant authorities.

The company's managing director Metin Pekin said: "We have been informed by a customer that a halal lamb burger produced by Paragon Quality Foods Ltd has tested positive for the presence of pork.

"Paragon Quality Foods Ltd is a pork-free site and has never knowingly bought or handled pork.

"We have carried out a full traceability of the product in question and have provided this information to the relevant enforcement authorities.

"The public analyst at Doncaster Borough Council has conducted unannounced formal sampling of our products on two occasions, with clear results.

"We are working with Doncaster Borough Council on a daily basis to provide all information requested. They are fully satisfied with our practices and procedures.

"At present we are awaiting the results of further testing conducted by the relevant authorities, therefore we have no further comment at this time."

A Leicester City Council spokeswoman confirmed that 19 schools were supplied with the frozen burgers.

The authority was made aware of the issue about two weeks ago and stock was removed from shelves within hours, she said.

The council has written to 6,000 families whose children might have eaten the burgers.

Further testing has been done on samples from the removed stock and results are expected next week, the spokeswoman added.

The decision to remove halal lamb burgers from Leicester schools comes after a number of high-profile meat scandals this year.

In February, the Ministry of Justice said it was to suspend a firm supplying meat to prisons after tests found that it may have provided halal pies and pasties with traces of pork DNA.

And the horse meat scandal, which began to unfold in January, found frozen burgers supplied to several supermarkets including Tesco contained horse DNA.

Investigations later revealed other beef products sold by retailers including lasagne and spaghetti bolognese were contaminated while meals in schools and hospitals had to be withdrawn after it was found they contained horse meat.

Last month Asda reported a test on its smart price corned beef had tested positive for very low levels of horse drug phenylbutazone, or bute, which is banned from the human food chain.

We usually have every little regard for the suffering for our meat. Besides our masters like our food kosher anyway, pretty much all food is here. Getting concerned about the non-stunned killing of animal for butchering is the stupidest issue in the world to worry about. The EDL is just a bunch Zionist faggots, so there you go. I don't know much about Subway but it looks like they are out to secure as much business as possible from the local demographic regardless of the effect on culture in the long term.

Don’t even bring up Nathan’s Famous — it stopped making kosher hot dogs altogether.

The dark-horse winner is Subway, the made-to-order sandwich giant poised to open its ninth kosher franchise Aug. 18 inside the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach, Fla. New Subways opening in Indianapolis and Skokie, Ill., will make it 11 by the end of the year. Five more are planned for next year.

Subway is not the only fast-food chain with kosher branches. Dunkin’ Donuts, the world’s largest coffee and baked goods chain, has 33 kosher franchises, mostly in New York, according to company spokesman Andrew Mastrangelo. They serve dairy breakfast sandwiches, but not full meals.
Subway, the second largest fast-food franchise in the world, didn’t set out to be No. 1 in the kosher market. Staffers at company headquarters in Milford, Conn., seemed bemused by the news.

“Really?” laughed Kevin Kane in the marketing department.

Sure, 11 kosher stores pales in comparison to the 22,000 non-kosher Subways in the United States, or to the hundreds of halal Subways in England and the Arab world. But it’s more than anyone else is offering.
And it’s a creative solution for Jewish community centers that want to offer kosher food but don’t want to take the financial risk themselves. Some would rather offer no food than violate kosher law.

“There are very few JCCs that run successful food establishments,” says Eric Koehler, director of the JCC of Northern Virginia, which has never provided food services in its building. “In this economy, it doesn’t make sense to have something that loses $20,000 to $30,000 a year.”

That’s why the Mandel JCC in Cleveland rented space to the country’s first kosher Subway in May 2006. The center had offered only kosher dining options since it opened in 1986, but none lasted very long. When Michael Hyman arrived in 2004 as the center’s new director, he closed the building’s last struggling cafe without knowing whether he could replace it.
In stepped Ghazi Faddoul, a Lebanese Christian who had opened 100 Subways in Cleveland and was willing to give kosher a try with the clout of a global chain behind him.

Ham and bacon were removed from the menu, the “cheese” is made of soy, and the Seafood Sensation sandwich is filled with imitation crab. Two microwaves and toaster ovens ensure that fish and meat are kept separate, a consideration for more observant Jews. There is a full-time mashgiach, or kosher supervisor, and the restaurant is closed on Shabbat.

“It’s been wildly successful,” Hyman says.In June, the JCC of Greater Washington in Rockville, Md., picked up on Cleveland’s experience, opening a kosher Subway in a space formerly filled by a kosher Dunkin’ Donuts. Executive director Michael Feinstein says the center has been getting much more foot traffic since it opened, particularly from Orthodox Jews.

“There aren’t that many kosher restaurants in the D.C. area, so it’s nice for the community to have this option,” Feinstein says. “And it’s great for us because it gets people into our building who might not otherwise be there.”
The Miami Beach JCC also looked to Cleveland’s example. The center’s director, Gary Bomzer, notes that the building already has an in-house kosher caterer, but no sit-down restaurant.

“Bringing in a national chain gives us real credibility,” he explains. “A brand name like Subway provides more than a cup of coffee.”
The remaining kosher Subways are freestanding stores: two in New York City, in Brooklyn and Queens, as well as one in Cedarhurst in the city’s Long Island suburbs; and one each in Los Angeles, Baltimore and Kansas City.

The U.S. stores are the only kosher Subways. Israel opened the world’s first kosher Subway in 1992 but the operation, which reached 23 stores at its peak, shut down in 2004 after the original manager died.

Subway spokesman Les Winograd says the company used its experience with halal, the Muslim standard, to learn how to deal with kashrut challenges such as sourcing specific meat and following strict dietary laws. The first halal Subway opened in Bahrain in 1984, followed by branches in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, Zambia and other countries with large Muslim communities. England alone has nearly 60 halal branches.

Kosher Subways are more difficult to keep open, Winograd says. Some open and shut, like one that lasted for about a year in Livingston, N.J., and a Wall Street branch that closed last winter when the economy collapsed.
While Winograd receives lots of inquiries from potential franchise owners in other countries who are interested in the kosher option, none have panned out.

“The population has not always been there to support the business,” he says.

Subway serves meat, so a kosher store requires full-time kosher supervision — an extra expense added to ingredients that already cost more than their non-kosher equivalents.
Maurice Lichy, owner of the new Miami JCC Subway, says he’s trying to keep his prices “competitive” and hopes to charge no more than $1.50 extra per sandwich.

Will he offer a kosher $5 Footlong?

Lichy hesitates.

“No," he says, "but I’ll try to manage a $6 Footlong. Probably tuna or turkey; not the corned beef.”
