Israel and Bahrain hail ‘world’s first’ deal for mutual Covid-19 vaccine passport scheme allowing quarantine-free travel

A new bilateral agreement has been reached between Bahrain and Israel to mutually recognize each other’s Covid-19 vaccine documentation, the countries’ foreign ministries have announced.

Under the deal, dubbed the “first of its kind”, travelers from either state who have received a recognized vaccine against Covid-19 will be exempt from quarantine upon their arrival.

The agreement covers vaccination certificates and Israel’s so-called “green pass,” which allows those who have been immunized to visit restaurants, gyms and other public places.

The mutually-accepted Covid vaccine documentation will be completely digital, using QR codes on mobile phones, which will be scanned at the border, according to NPR.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid told his Arab neighbors that Israel is “here to stay,” and urged former enemies to “talk to us” at the inauguration of his country’s embassy in the United Arab Emirates.

“Israel wants peace with its neighbors, with all its neighbors,” Lapid said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Israel’s new embassy in Abu Dhabi. “We aren't going anywhere. The Middle East is our home.”

“We’re here to stay. We call on all the countries of the region to recognize that and to come to talk to us,” he added.

(JTA) — Two Israeli airlines have started what looks like a beautiful friendship with Morocco.

Israir and El Al flights from Tel Aviv landed in Marrakesh on Sunday, Agence France Presse reported. The debut flights to Morocco are an outcome of the normalization agreements between Israel and four Arab states.

Israir is planning three flights a week to Marrakesh, the agency quoted the airline’s officials as saying, and El Al five flights a week, to Marrakesh and Casablanca.

Israelis, many of Moroccan descent, have routinely traveled to Morocco since the relaxation of restrictions in the 1990s, but via third countries. There have been a handful of direct flights having to do with affairs of state.

Azerbaijan opens trade office in Tel Aviv in preparation for future opening of embassy

(JTA) — Azerbaijan has opened its first diplomatic office in Israel, three decades after the countries initiated diplomatic relations.

Azerbaijan’s trade office in Tel Aviv, opened on Thursday, is a stepping stone to the central Asian Muslim country opening an embassy in Israel, according to the Jerusalem Post. The countries began their diplomatic relations in 1992, and Israel has an embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital.

Trade between the two countries is at least $200 million, according to the Post.

(JTA) — Few Jews know Turkey like Mendy Chitrik, a rabbi who oversees kosher certification in dozens of factories across the country.

Over the past 20 years, Chitrik, a Chabad emissary who was born in Israel, has been logging thousands of miles annually across that country, which is larger than Texas and whose 12,000 Jews almost all live in the capital city of Istanbul.

But in Chitrik’s experience, antisemitic attitudes rarely trickle down to the people he meets in his travels. Imams devote hours of their days to help him look for the sites he is investigating, Chitrik said. People on the street invite him to dinner and express their feeling of solidarity and fraternity with Jews.

“Coexistence of Jews and Muslims isn’t just a slogan for conferences,” said Chitrik, who chairs the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States, a body set up in 2019 to support Jewish life in Muslim countries. “It is and was reality.”

The road trip, which Chitrik and his son Chaim began on July 26, includes well-known stops that demonstrate Turkish Jewry’s deep roots, such as the ruins of the Sardis Synagogue. One of antiquity’s largest and oldest synagogues, built at least 1,500 years ago, it’s also famous for its well-preserved mosaic floor and walls, which were unearthed in 1962.

But there are also monuments that few people outside the Chitrik family even know exist, such as headstones of Jewish soldiers at Gallipoli, the site of one of the bloodiest and best known battles of World War I. The remains of Jews who fought for the Ottoman Empire lie there alongside their coreligionists from the French and British armies – part of a death toll of about 100,000 men.

The first part of the Abraham Accords, the historic cooperation agreements between Israel and several of its Arab neighbors, brokered in large part by the United States, turned one year old on Friday. The United Arab Emirates signed a treaty to normalize its relations with Israel for the first time on Aug. 13, 2020, opening up collaboration on tourism, trade, technology sharing and more. Bahrain would soon follow suit, followed by Sudan and Morocco — all of whom never had formal relations with Israel.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Sitting in front of a group of rabbis in New York City, the undersecretary for political affairs at the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry explained that he first learned his country would be signing a diplomatic treaty with Israel on a Saturday.

It was all part of a two-day trip meant to meet, connect with and charm leaders of the American Jewish community in New York City. The trip came against the backdrop of Bahrain’s normalization agreement last year with Israel, called the Abraham Accords, which also established full relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Al Khalifa also made a direct pitch to American Jews: He wants them to invest money in Bahrain and travel to the country as tourists. In addition — following criticism of Bahrain’s human rights record and authoritarian government — he wants American Jews to spread the message of, in his words, “the values of coexistence and acceptance and tolerance that Bahrain has been upholding for so long.”

A new Jewish dating site just for the Jewish Gulf communities just launched

(JTA) — Earlier this month, Bahrain’s Jewish community celebrated the first Jewish wedding in the country in 52 years. The community, along with the Jewish communities in other Gulf countries, is hoping its next project will lead to more weddings.

The Association of Gulf Jewish Communities launched a new dating website for Jewish singles in the Gulf Sunday, called Jewish Singles in the Gulf. The site will allow single Jews in the area to fill out a questionnaire which a group of matchmakers will then use to match up participants.

The aim of the site is to encourage Jews in the Gulf countries to put down roots there. While countries in the area like Bahrain have long been home to Jewish communities, those countries have historically remained small. But with the increased visibility that has come with normalization agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, the Jewish communities in those countries are hoping their numbers will increase.

But after the Abraham Accords, in which Israel signed diplomatic agreements to normalize relations with the United Arab Emirates, and the peace agreements with other Arab countries that followed, the need for Aravrit, Turkenich’s script that allows both Hebrew and Arabic to be read from the same text, has expanded. The sky is now the limit for Turkenich’s project.

In Istanbul, a conference of rabbis from Islamic nations got a surprise: an audience with Erdogan

ISTANBUL (JTA) – Rabbis from across the world filled the halls of Istanbul’s Conrad hotel this week for the inaugural conference of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States (ARIS). They were expecting two days of networking, discussions of Jewish law and simple camaraderie over their shared experience of supporting Jewish life in Muslim-majoirty countries.

What they weren’t expecting was to be whisked off to the Turkish capital of Ankara, on a private plane sent by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to have dinner with him at his presidential palace.

According to Chitrik, Erdogan stayed with the rabbis for two hours discussing a variety of topics.

“The president has listened very gracefully to all of the rabbis, has spoken in very strong terms against antisemitism and Islamophobia and has reiterated the Turkish stance that denying the Holocaust is a crime against humanity,” Chitrik told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, adding that Erdogan also voiced his support for the construction and renovation of synagogues in Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Another topic addressed was the state of Turkish-Israeli relations.

“I value our renewed dialogue with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett,” Erdogan noted to the rabbis, according to the government-aligned outlet Daily Sabah.

Around 100,000 Jews still live in Muslim-majority countries, Chitrick estimated. The largest Jewish populations can be found in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey.

“People say, ‘Wow, there are 100,000 Jews in Islamic countries?’ Yes, there are,” he said. “They have been living in this Islamic world for thousands of years, and they continue to live here, continue to call this place home. Many times they’re very patriotic toward the places where they live in. Most of them are not looking for other places to move out to. “

When he founded ARIS, Chitrik was adamant that it couldn’t just be an organization of Chabad rabbis. It would need to bridge all the different Jewish communities served in the Muslim world, including post-Soviet countries like Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan; historic communities of the Middle East and North Africa such as Turkey, Iran, Tunisia and Morocco; and fast-growing communities in the UAE and Bahrain in the wake of the Abraham Accords.

“The agenda of the Alliance of Rabbis is to normalize Jewish life in Muslim countries, Chitrik said. “It shouldn’t look as a surprise to people.”

Researchers discover ruins of 16th-century Jewish community in Morocco as king orders restoration of sites

(JTA) — Researchers from Israel, Morocco and France have discovered remnants of a small Jewish community in the mountains of Morocco, Haaretz reported Monday.

The discovery comes weeks after King Mohammed VI of Morocco ordered the restoration of hundreds of Jewish sites across the kingdom, and a year after Israel and Morocco agreed to formal diplomatic relations. The restoration plan includes the site at Tamanart, as well as cemeteries and hundreds of synagogues.

Jews are believed to have first established communities in Morocco more than 2,000 years ago. In the mid-20th century, the Jewish population reached a peak of 250,000. It is estimated that only 2,000 Jews remain today.

Under Erdoğan, Turkish authorities are leading a revival of Jewish heritage

(JTA) — Turkey, a country with a dwindling Jewish population and a Muslim leader who’s been accused of making antisemitic remarks by the U.S. State Department, might not present the likeliest scene for a revival of Jewish heritage.

Yet that is what has been happening there for the past five years. Historic synagogues have been renovated and an historic center of Sephardic life holds an annual culture festival.

Some observers regard this revival, much of it underwritten with government funds, as little more than an attempt by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to ditch the antisemitism label he has earned by ranting against Israelis and Jews and dismissing critics as stooges of Israel.

But others identify a more complex set of motivations, combining aspirations to attract tourists and a genuine appreciation for the ancient presence of Jews in Turkey and their contribution to its culture.

Critics of Erdoğan’s conservative party, which has triggered a revival of Muslim nationalist sentiment as it cracked down on dissent in the media, the army and everyday society, say it is Islamist and fundamentalist. Erdoğan has rejected these labels, and he has recently spoken with Israeli President Isaac Herzog about hosting a warm diplomatic meeting.

Rabbi Mendy Chitrik, the Istanbul-based chairman of the Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States, said authorities seem sincere in their devotion to preserving Jewish heritage.

“As a rabbi who cares about strengthening Jewish life and persevering Jewish heritage, I am not concerned with political considerations,” said Chitrik, who attended the Kilis festival.
