‘Extremely critical situation’ in NATO member's military – general

The Danish military “lacks soldiers like never before,” according to a top commander

The Danish military’s second-in-command has warned that the country is “years” away from having a combat-capable army, according to comments he made this week to the government-owned TV 2 broadcaster.

Brigadier General Henrik Lyhne said Denmark’s military is facing what he referred to as its worst staffing issue in decades – a factor which he said will complicate efforts to meet Copenhagen’s NATO obligations. He added that low wages and below-par personnel housing have contributed to an exodus from the armed forces. This, in turn, has led to problems in Denmark supplying troops to the US-led military bloc’s eastern flank in Latvia.

“This is an emergency call,” Lynhe said in an interview broadcast on Monday. “The situation is extremely critical, especially because we lack soldiers like never before. I have been in the armed forces for 40 years, and it has never looked so bad.”

He added that approximately 20-25% of positions in the Danish military are currently vacant, and that even if “more money is injected soon” it would take years to restore it to previous standards.

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the Danish ambassador Jakob Henningsen directly on Wednesday in the matter of Nord Stream sabotage, according to Russian news agency Tass as Sweden said it was "still unclear" who was responsible.

"We hope, Mr Ambassador, that the Danes will support our proposal to establish an independent international commission to investigate all the circumstances of the incident," the Russian President noted.

Russia has also previously asked Denmark to involve the Russians in the efforts to find out who was behind the explosions at Nord Stream.

Denmark refusing to engage on Nord Stream probe – Moscow

Copenhagen has rejected all contact regarding the investigation, the Russian ambassador has warned

Denmark is setting a dangerous precedent by refusing to cooperate with Russia on an investigation into the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, Moscow’s ambassador to Copenhagen, Vladimir Barbin, warned on Monday.

“There is still no substantive information about investigative activities and any preliminary results,” Barbin told the Izvestia newspaper.

The envoy added that Copenhagen has “rejected any contact with Russia regarding this criminal case, and doesn’t show any interest in organizing an independent international investigation.”

The pipelines built to deliver gas from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea were attacked in September 2022. Although the damage was discovered in international waters, the area is within the economic zones of Denmark and Sweden.

Denmark, Sweden, and Germany have launched separate probes into the sabotage, but no concrete findings have been revealed so far.

COPENHAGEN/STOCKHOLM, July 31 (Reuters) - More Koran burnings took place in Sweden and Denmark on Monday as the governments of the two Nordic countries said they were examining ways to legally limit such acts in a bid to de-escalate growing tensions with several Muslim countries.

Denmark and Sweden have seen several protests in recent weeks in which copies of the Koran were burned, or otherwise damaged, prompting outrage in Muslim countries and demands that the Nordic governments put a stop to the burnings.

The Danish government said on Sunday it would seek to find a "legal tool" that could enable authorities to intervene in such protests, if deemed to entail "significant negative consequences for Denmark, not least with regard to security".

"The fact that we are signalling both in Denmark and abroad that we are working on it will hopefully help de-escalate the problems we are facing," Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told journalists following a meeting with foreign policy speakers of parliament on Monday.

The United States has approved the deployment of F-16 fighter jets from Denmark and the Netherlands to Ukraine as soon as the training of pilots is completed.

“Washington gave Denmark and the Netherlands official assurances that the United States will expedite approval of transfer requests for F-16s to go to Ukraine when the pilots are trained,” a U.S. government official told the Reuters news agency.

U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken confirmed the decision in a letter sent to his Danish and Dutch counterparts.

“I am writing to express the United States’ full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors,” Blinken wrote.

A coalition of 11 countries should start training Ukrainian pilots in F-16 fighter jets later this month, led by Denmark. Troels Poulsen, Denmark’s acting defense minister, said in July that he hoped to see “results” from the training by early 2024.

COPENHAGEN, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Denmark has dropped charges against a former defence minister and a former spy chief over allegations of leaks of classified information, Danish prosecutors said on Wednesday, after court rulings meant top secret evidence would have to become public.

Former minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen and former head of the Danish Defence Intelligence Service Lars Findsen had been charged under a rarely used section of the penal code that carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
