Default China launches Tianwen-1 Mars probe

China successfully launched its Tianwen-1 probe to Mars today at 12:41 p.m. Peking time from the Wenchang launch site on Hainan Island. The Long March-5 rocket performed well and the spacecraft successfully separated from the booster after performing the Trans-Mars injection burn where it will arrive at Mars in February 2021. Tianwen (Heavenly Questions)-1 consists of a Mars orbiter, lander and rover, and is the first interplanetary mission to launch from Chinese territory. The Chinese space agency has selected two preliminary landing sites at Utopia Planitia in Mars' northern hemisphere, the same region where NASA's Viking 2 probe touched down in 1976.

Default Tianwen-1 enters Mars orbit

Quote:
Chinese space probe Tianwen-1 has successfully reached Mars and entered a stable orbit around the Red Planet. The spacecraft is expected to deploy a rover to study the planet's surface in about three months.

The probe's half-year journey to Mars successfully concluded on Wednesday, according to China's National Space Administration. The Tianwen-1 - 'Quest for Heavenly Truth' in Chinese - performed a 15-minute retrograde burn, establishing itself in a stable elliptical orbit around the planet.

. . . The Tianwen-1 mission is China's first independent mission to the planet, performed without any help from other spacefaring nations.

Self-video of Tianwen performing the Mars Orbit Insertion burn. You can see the solar panels and high-gain antenna shaking as the rocket engine fires.

Since the TW-1 lander will be touching down somewhere in Utopia Planitia, the images it sends back should be similar to Viking 2's, unless the Chinese space agency selects a site with what they believe will have different terrain from the Viking 2 site.

Planned Tianwen-1 landing site in Utopia Planitia. It will be to the south of Viking 2 by a considerable distance, so the rover won't drive up to it and take some pictures, unfortunately.

China's 1st Mars rover 'Zhurong' lands on the Red Planet

Quote:
China just successfully landed its first rover on Mars, becoming only the second nation to do so.

The Tianwen-1 mission, China's first interplanetary endeavor, reached the surface of the Red Planet Friday (May 14) at approximately 7:11 p.m. EDT (2311 GMT), though Chinese space officials have not yet confirmed the exact time and location of touchdown. Tianwen-1 (which translates to "Heavenly Questions") arrived in Mars orbit in February after launching to the Red Planet on a Long March 5 rocket in July 2020.

After circling the Red Planet for more than three months, the Tianwen-1 lander, with the rover attached, separated from the orbiter to begin its plunge toward the planet's surface. Once the lander and rover entered Mars' atmosphere, the spacecraft endured a similar procedure to the "seven minutes of terror" that NASA's Mars rovers experienced when attempting soft landings on Mars.

A heat shield protected the spacecraft during the fiery descent, after which the mission safely parachuted down to the Utopia Planitia region, a plain inside of an enormous impact basin in the planet's northern hemisphere. Much like during NASA's Perseverance rover landing, Tianwen-1's landing platform fired some small downward-facing rocket engines to slow down during the last few seconds of its descent.

The China National Space Administration (CSNA) has not yet officially confirmed the successful landing, but it has been announced on social media by the state-run China Global Television Network (CGTN) and by researchers at Macau University of Science and Technology in China.

How much of their design was copied from NASA designs, and how much is original? On casual observation, I didn't see anything in the design that NASA hadn't already done. Perhaps the off-ramps were original; I don't recall seeing those on a NASA mission, but I could be mistaken.

The Chinese seem to be going with proven designs, such as Viking, Mars Phoenix and Mars InSight as far as entry, descent and landing is concerned. There are only so many ways to achieve a successful soft landing with current technology. The Zhurong rover is very similar to the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, too. Sure, White men did it first, but I'm still pleased to see they made it without the appearance of the "Great Galactic Ghoul" that hangs around Mars, occasionally gobbling up spacecraft. I'm waiting to see some pictures from the surface to see how similar the part of Utopia Planitia TW-1 landed at looks to Viking 2's.

Even if they did copy the design from NASA, they still had to build the craft, and execute the mission, which appears to have been successful.

According to what I read on nasaspaceflight.com, pictures from the lander/rover should be released in a few hours during a CGTN broadcast.

Looks like a lot less rocky area of Utopia Planitia than Viking 2's location. It's similar to Mars InSight's landing site in Elysium Planitia. The rover shouldn't have any problems navigating the terrain. Drive-off ramps are deployed normally. The two bright areas in the upper right corner of the black-and-white photo (from the rover's hazard avoidance camera) could be the parachute and backshell.

Northern Utopia Planitia as photographed by Viking 2 lander in 1976.

Not hearing much from TW-1 after landing May 14 and the rover descending down the ramp to the surface on the 22nd. No new pictures from the surface either--the release of data from the Chinese space agency is almost non-existent. The Zhurong rover can only communicate with Earth when the orbiter passes over the landing site, which should be at least once a day. There might be some kind of technical problem, but they're saying nothing.

I was hoping for some high quality photos of the surface, but maybe the yellow man who assembled the rover was the same one who passed off a motherboard in QA inspection that shipped to me with horribly bent pins inside of the CPU socket?
