German prosecutors prepare dozen-plus cases against Nazi war-crime suspects

“The passage of time is no barrier to justice when it comes to the heinous crimes of the Holocaust,” said Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Education Trust.

Prosecutors in Germany are getting ready to bring forward more than a dozen legal cases against elderly men and women for their alleged work at Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust.

Prosecutors confirmed last week that a 100-year-old man is deemed fit to stand trial in October for serving as a guard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and for his alleged complicity in the killings of more than 3,500 people between 1942 and 1945. The man, whose name was not released, was also allegedly involved in the shooting of Soviet prisoners of war and helped kill others with the poison gas Zyklon B, according to JTA.

Irmgard Furchner, a 96-year-old woman, will also face trial this year for her alleged work as a secretary in the Stutthof concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, according to The Washington Post. She will be tried at a juvenile court because she was a teenager at the time of the crime.

Default 96-year-old former Nazi death camp secretary faces trial

96-year-old former Nazi death camp secretary faces trial

28 September 2021

A former secretary at a Nazi concentration camp, now 96, faces a German court on Thursday charged with complicity in the murders of 10,000 people — the first such case in recent years against a woman.

Irmgard Furchner was a teenager when she worked in the camp director’s office at Stutthof in occupied Poland, near the city of Danzig, known today as Gdansk.

Furchner “assisted those responsible at the camp in the systematic killing of Jewish prisoners, Polish partisans and Soviet Russian prisoners of war in her function as a stenographer and secretary to the camp commander” between June 1943 and April 1945, according to prosecutors.

A minor at the time of the alleged crimes, she is charged with “aiding and abetting murder in more than 10,000 cases” as well as complicity in attempted murder, added prosecutors from the northern city of Itzehoe.
