Michael Souter has been found guilty of a string of
child sex offences spanning two decades.

The long-serving BBC Norfolk and former Radio Clyde was convicted at Norwich Crown Court on a total of 26 offences against seven boys aged between 11 and 16 between 1979 and 1999.

The 60-year-old, of Loddon, Norfolk, was also been found guilty of further counts of making and possessing indecent images of children.

Jurors have not reached a verdict on one count of indecent assault on a male and have also cleared him of one charge of possessing an indecent photograph of a child, a spokeswoman for the court said.

Prosecutors described Souter, who was also involved in the Scouts and a social services youth mentoring scheme, as a "sexual deviant" who was obsessed with young boys in shorts and uniform.

During the five week trial, prosecutor Andrew Shaw told jurors that Souter used his celebrity to abuse society's most vulnerable.

Mr Shaw told the court: "He worked in radio and television and was something of a local celebrity.

"The significance of his work and his involvement with the scouts and social services, is that these three roles brought Mr Souter into regular contact with pliable young boys and very often pliable young boys who were among society's most vulnerable.

"We say Mr Souter is a deviant sexual abuser of young boys, particularly boys in uniform and those wearing shorts."

Souter had denied the offences saying that he was the victim of a conspiracy in which allegations against him were made up.

Originally from Scotland, he worked as a producer and presenter in both commercial and BBC radio since the mid-1970s. He had previously presented for Radio Clyde.

Since 1989 he has worked as a freelance broadcaster and had run a media relations consultancy.

Mr Shaw said mistakes may have been made by the authorities in the past, but added: "As we have seen in recent high profile cases, victims often only tell what has happened to them when they are ready to."

The court heard that on one occasion Souter had plied a victim, who had a casual job at BBC Norfolk, with alcohol. The boy passed out and woke to find his trousers pulled down and Souter, who had not been drinking, molesting him.

Another victim was indecently touched by Souter while at a scout camp, Mr Shaw said.

He took boys on trips to burger restaurants and theme parks and used his links with Norwich City Football Club to invite them to watch matches at Carrow Road, the court heard.

The trial heard that witnesses had felt unable to come forward because of Souter's high standing in the community.

Souter told the trial that one witness, who claimed he was forced to ask the presenter to stop touching him, owed his later career to his influence and contacts.

Prosecutors also told the court that possible offences committed by Souter abroad, including in Spain where he has a home, had been reported but could not be tried in the UK.

Head of the Crown Prosecution Service's complex casework unit for the East of England Chris McCann said: "Michael Souter is the classic example of the predatory paedophile who devoted most of his adult life to grooming and abusing young boys while maintaining a facade of the utmost respectability.

"Mr.Souter presented himself to people as a local celebrity from radio and television, happy to be involved in charity events, the Scout movement and as a youth mentor for Norfolk Social Services.

"All this was a smokescreen to hide his true intention: to become close to young boys so he could sexually abuse them, confident that his celebrity status would mean they would not be believed.

"This is the tactic of the classic predatory paedophile who hides behind a facade of respectability to carefully select and groom his victims then subject them to repeated sexual assaults over a period of time."

A former child protection officer says British police had threatened him to stop his investigations into child abuse by high-profile MPs in 1990.


Chris Fay said he was threatened with a gun to his head to avoid probing allegations surrounding Elm Guest House in Barnes, where young boys were allegedly taken to be abused by a VIP pedophile ring.

According to Fay, members of Special Branch routinely warned him, his colleagues, and even the victims when the story broke in in early 90s.

“At one point they had me up against a wall by my throat with a gun at my head telling me in no uncertain terms that I was to back away if I knew what was good for me,” Fay said.

“I was told by the police implicitly, ‘We do not want you to come to us with big names’,” he added.

Fay, who worked for National Association of Young People In Care attacked the Metropolitan police for “physically” stopping the victims from speaking with the group and said they were acting like “gangsters”.

“I witnessed Special Branch officers manhandling them [the victims] and turning them away with a warning to keep their mouths shut. It was blatant,” said the 67 year-old child protection officer.

Campaigner Bill Maloney also accused the police of protecting high-profile criminals, saying “police cover-ups to protect the wealthy” should stop immediately.

The British police have so far declined to comment on Fay’s remarks.

Its the same guy but the story apart from being a couple of months old its so misleading you could almost say its a lie.
Filth asked him to come to the pig station on the pretence of needing more info,then they nicked him as a way of searching his house and compute with no warrent.They dont need one if your in custody.

No, because they claim the honour dies with the recipient and so it's already "dead". It would apparently require a new law passing in order to strip him, but really, what does the passing of such a law take? It would be interesting if they tried to pass such a law just to see who opposed it.

Jailed former BBC presenter Stuart Hall has been rearrested by Lancashire Police over child sex offences.

The arrests relate to two females, who were aged between 12 and 15 at the time of the abuse, which was allegedly committed between 1974 and 1980.

A force spokesman said the offences allegedly took place in Manchester and Derbyshire.

Hall, 83, is serving a 30-month jail sentence for 14 counts of sexual abuse against girls.

Jimmy Savile's former flatmate and chauffeur has been charged with a series of serious sex offences against young girls, it has emerged.

Ray Teret, 72, is charged with a total of 32 offences involving 15 different victims who accuse him of sexual abuse between 1962 and 1996.

The alleged offences were committed primarily in the Greater Manchester area.

Teret, of Altrincham, Greater Manchester was charged with 15 counts of rape of a female under 16, one count of rape, one count of attempted rape of a female under 16, six counts of indecent assault of a female under 16, three counts of indecent assault of a female under 14 and one count of gross indecency with a child under 13.

He also faces two counts of conspiracy to rape a girl under 16, one count of possession of extreme pornography, one count of possession of prohibited images and one count of possession of an indecent image of a child.

He is due to appear at Manchester City Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "A 71 year-old-man was re-arrested in connection with historic sexual offences against children when he answered his bail on Wednesday October 23.

"He was also further arrested in connection with a number of other historic sex offences against children.

"He remains in police custody for questioning."

DCI Graham Brock of Greater Manchester Police said: “This has been a complex investigation that was originally launched in October 2012 when an initial complaint was made to Greater Manchester Police.

“Since that time, we have carried out extensive and wide-ranging inquiries and interviewed a number of people as part of that investigation.

“It has been important those inquiries were carried out thoroughly so that, in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, we have been able to secure a number of charges.

“We will continue to support all those women who have come forward and offer them whatever welfare they need through the use of specially-trained officers.”

As part of the investigation into Teret, William Harper, 65, of Stretford, Greater Manchester was charged with conspiracy to rape a girl under 16 and attempt rape of a female under the age of 16 and Alan Ledger, 62, of of Altrincham was charged with indecent assault of a female under 16 and aiding and abetting the rape of a female under 16.

Both Harper and Ledger are due to appear before Manchester City Magistrates' Court on 30 October.

Teret was arrested and bailed in November last year with another man on suspicion of historic rape following an investigation into three separate claims of sexual abuse.

Police emphasised that the accusations were not linked to the national inquiry into abuse by disgraced TV presenter Savile, with whom Teret worked and once shared a flat.

A Former BBC employee, who has been accused of child abuse, is found dead on a day he was due to appear in court.


David Smith, who was the driver of disgraced BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, was found dead at his home in Effingham Road, Lewisham, on the same day that he was supposed to appear at Southwark Crown Court over sex offences against a 12-year-old boy in mid 80s.

"At approximately 14:20 officers entered the address and found the body of a man. A forensic medical examiner attended and pronounced the man dead at the scene. Next of kin are being informed, “Scotland Yard said.

The cause of Smith’s death is not yet known.

Smith was the first person to be charged as part of the Operation Yewtree investigation, which was set up after hundreds of allegations of abuse against Savile emerged following his death in 2011.

The 66-year-old driver was charged with two counts of indecent assault, two of indecency and one of a serious sexual offence as part of the probe.

An earlier report by the police and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), branded Jimmy Savile as one of the UK’s most prolific known sexual predators after it emerged that some 214 crimes, including rape and sexual abuse, was committed by the presenter.

Several high-profile figures have so far been arrested over the inquiry into indecent abuses surrounding the British entertainment industry, including TV presenter Rolf Harris, singer Gary Glitter, radio presenter Stuart Hall, former TV producer Wilfred De'Ath and comedians Freddie Starr and Jim Davidson.

BBC broadcaster Paul Gambaccini has been arrested on suspicion of historical sexual offences as part of Scotland Yard's Operation Yewtree.

Mr Gambaccini, 64, was held at his home in south London early on Tuesday and questioned in police custody, before being released on bail until January.

A spokesman for Mr Gambaccini said he denied the allegations.

The BBC said Mr Gambaccini would not be presenting his Saturday Radio 2 show for the "coming weeks".

A young woman killed herself because she was sexually assaulted by a BBC star, her brother claimed last night.

Distraught Glenda Hull could not live with the shame after she was sexually assaulted by a presenter, her family believe.

Glenda, 21, refused to name the pervert she said attacked her in his car at a remote beauty spot.

But her brother is convinced the finger of suspicion points firmly at the star.

Weeks after the shocking assault Glenda plunged to her death from a 29-storey building.

Her brother told last night how he believes a mysterious woman in a red cardigan could hold the key to the tragedy.

Glenda, who had a fiancé, killed herself “completely out of the blue” within an hour of the woman speaking to her.

Now Roy Hull, 57, wants to know what part the woman played in the tragedy and has urged police to review the events leading to his sister’s death in 1971.

He is certain the BBC presenter – who we cannot name for legal reasons – was the man who Glenda said *threatened and attacked her in his
car at Snake Pass, a lonely but beautiful spot on the A57 high in the Peak District.

The star, who is still alive, had a home in the area.

Roy is working alongside a legal firm specialising in historic sexual abuse cases who are investigating the *allegations. The lawyers are desperate to interview the woman in the cardigan.

The tragedy unfolded when Glenda was working at the General Post Office in Manchester.

She was excited when she learned that the BBC celebrity was to attend a two-day conference near her work headquarters. At the end of the first day she went for drinks with the star and work friends.

Roy, a teenager at the time, said: “She came home and I recall her saying that she had met the BBC star and was quite excited about it as he was a big celebrity in those days.

“I remember this vividly as he was such a well-known and respected figure.

“I was in awe of her having this *opportunity. I was an avid football fan and had been quite excited as the star said he could get my sister tickets.

“At the end of the week there were a few of them going out for drinks. After that she was promised a lift home by somebody – who she never revealed. But instead of bringing her back he took her over Snake Pass.”

Glenda told friends the man “threatened to leave her up there” if she did not comply with his perverted request.




Roy, speaking from New Zealand where he now lives, said: “She didn’t say whether she was driven back by this person or whether she escaped and got back by some other means.

“She was very distraught and secretive about the whole incident.”

Roy, who initially made no *connection between the attack and the BBC man, added: “A week or so after I asked about him getting us tickets.

“Glenda snapped, saying never to mention it again.

“She was very *aggressive and angry. There was clearly something there but I was simply *disappointed. I was just a 15-year-old avid football fan.

"Mum and Dad tried to get it out of her but she would never divulge who was involved.”

Then a few weeks after the attack Glenda was at work when she was approached by the woman in a red cardigan. It is believed Glenda disclosed details of what had happened to her because witnesses recall her being visibly upset.

Glenda’s family fear the woman might have even known the attacker and warned Glenda off ever mentioning the incident again.

Just an hour after that conversation Glenda left her seat in the office.

She made her way to the top of the General Post Office and jumped to her death from the 29th floor. Recalling the shock, Roy said: “It had seemed a normal day. Glenda called Mum and seemed happy and fine.

"She was engaged to be married and to us seemed happy with life. There was no indication of what was to come.

“An hour later she had fallen off of a 29-storey building. Something major must have happened in that time.

“Her workmates say she was approached by a woman in a red cardigan and minutes later she had taken her life.

“It was completely out of the blue.”

Roy believes meeting the woman was the last straw for Glenda as she struggled to cope with the shame and trauma of her ordeal at the hands of
the star.

He said: “As a family we have always been concerned that this man was responsible for abusing my sister – an act which led to her taking her life. Now we just want to know the truth.”

Roy added: “After certain stars were arrested and convicted I realised that a similar thing could have happened to my sister.

“It makes sense that the BBC star was involved and I can only guess that the woman who approached Glenda was somebody who knew him. My sister had no reason to kill herself and was happy with life.

"The fact that this happened to her and then she was approached by this woman, presumably to try to keep her quiet, seems to be too much of a coincidence.

“There will be a police file that a woman was seen talking to her and it was only a matter of minutes before she fell from the building.”

The coroner recorded a suicide verdict. Roy said: “Given the facts, you can’t dispute that but there is an unknown woman who talked to her before she died.

"Who knows what she may have said to her? It’s perfectly possible she could have been preventing her from speaking out.

“It would certainly put a different slant on things and we want the police to investigate again.”

Roy told of the heartache his family has endured since Glenda’s death.

He said: “My mum is 91 and in ill health with dementia setting in. When she speaks about my sister she always says that woman is the one who holds the key.

“She will probably go to the grave not knowing what happened to her daughter. All we want is for the police to reopen this case and answer the mystery that we have lived with for more than 40 years.”

Roy has given a statement to Pannone Solicitors in Manchester who are appealing for help in tracing the woman.

Pannone lawyer Alan Collins told the Sunday Mirror: “This is a very distressing situation where a family have lived for years without knowing the full circumstances of their loved one’s death.

“For us to help Glenda’s brother, Roy Hull, we need to speak to anyone who might have seen or spoken to Glenda around the time of her suicide, especially anyone she spoke to about her meeting with a showbiz personality weeks before her death.”

Mr Collins added: “We are certainly not accusing anyone of anything but there are questions that need answering to establish the truth about this poor young woman’s death.”
