A nuclear rocket engine would sure reduce travel time to Mars. With chemical propulsion and a standard Hohmann transfer orbit, the transit time from Earth to Mars is around six months.

If all goes well, Ingenuity should be making its first flight on Sunday, April 11 after Percy drives away to a safe observation location about 200 feet away. The data on the flight should be received at JPL the following morning, April 12, which is incidentally, the 60th anniversary of the world's first manned space flight by Yuri Gagarin and the 40th anniversary of the first Space Shuttle flight.

Something that would have been more interesting than the mechanical sounds of the rover would be broadcasting a recording of a human voice on Mars, perhaps Carl Sagan or somebody. Maybe when humans finally land on Mars, they can look for Marvin Martian, he could be hiding underground somewhere. But they might make him very angry.

The technical problems of Humans on Mars are far more daunting than anyone will admit. The fact is solar radiation and cosmic radiation begin to cause massive effects on biological tissue within hours of being in deep space. Unless lightweight, effective shielding is developed, If you are over 50 your chances of seeing humans walk on Mars is basically zero despite the talk of 2030 or 2035 being launch dates. The USA is broke. The cost of a successful mission to Mars and back will cost in estimates 2-5 trillion dollars.

The defunding of NASA has already been extreme. In actuality the cost of sending humans is borderline imbecile at this point. Artificial Intelligence Robots will be the first independently operating entities on Mars. In My opinion I would be shocked to think Humans on Mars before 2075 will be monumentally optimistic.
