BBC executives covered up a second paedophile who abused children in the toilets at the Corporation's studios, it has been claimed.

Revered journalist John Simpson claims a radio presenter, at the time one of the biggest names at the BBC, preyed upon youngsters after they won competitions to tour the studios and meet him.

But when Simpson, who has worked at the BBC for more than 40 years, tried to expose the predatory paedophile after his death, bosses called him an ‘idiot’ and instead told to praise the star in his obituary.

The news comes just days after a Jim'll Fix It director claimed he made several attempts to expose disgraced Jimmy Savile to the BBC but had been ignored by bosses.

David Nicolson, 67, said he reported Savile decades ago when he caught the star having sex with a 15 or 16-year-old girl in his dressing room. Yet he was told by bosses: ‘That’s Jimmy’ and ‘that’s the way it goes’.

Claims that bosses covered up child abuse spanning 40 years by a second paedophile, said to be 'a children's favourite', will cast further doubt on the practices at the Corporation.



Veteran war correspondent Simpson made the claims in his 1999 autobiography Strange Places, Questionable People, first published in 1998, where he refers to the abuser as simply 'Uncle Dick'.

He claims the BBC's attempt to silence the claims went as high up as the then Director General, as reported by The Sun.

The radio presenter he claims abused children was one of the BBC's biggest names from the 1920s until his death in 1967.

During his stardom he was so famous he reportedly gave tours of the studios to royalty, including the Queen.


Simpson said he heard of the allegations when Uncle Dick - whose real name is not known - died.

He had been asked to write an obituary for the presenter and was given the details of the abuse by a female colleague of the star, who he referred to as 'Auntie Gladys'.

He said she referred to the man as 'an evil old b******' and added: 'I hope he died in agony.'

He wrote in his book: 'Week after week, children from all over the country would win competitions to visit the BBC and meet Uncle Dick.

'He would welcome them, show them around, give them lunch, then take them to the gents and interfere with them.

'If parents complained, the Director General's office would write saying the nation wouldn't understand such an accusation against a much-loved figure.'

Simpson said he told his editor what he had learned but was instead told to praise the star.

A senior journalist told him: 'You stupid, unthinking, ignorant, destructive young idiot'.

His boss then dictated: 'Auntie Gladys told the BBC tonight that she was deeply saddened by Uncle Dick's death. He had a wonderful way with children.

'That's how you do an obit.'

Mr Simpson and the BBC declined to comment.

With today’s Sun front page following up our coverage of BBC child abuse allegations made by world editor John Simpson, Scrapbook can now reveal the name of the individual to which Simpson was thought to be referring in a 2009 book — Children’s Hour presenter Derek McCulloch.

Ringing a former children’s radio presenter ‘Auntie Gladys’ for comment on the death of a colleague, ‘Gladys’ makes allegations of child abuse against ‘Uncle Dick’:

‘Auntie Gladys’ and ‘Uncle Dick’ are thought to be pseudonyms for Kathleen Garrsgadden and Derek McCulloch, who were known as ‘Auntie Kathleen’ and ‘Uncle Mac’ to millions of Children’s Hour listeners. McCulloch’s death in June 1967 also coincides with the relevant tenure in a London newsroom described by John Simpson in his book Strange Places, Questionable People.

While the apparent McCulloch allegations significantly predate those against Jimmy Savile, the former star is still venerated by the BBC. The corporation list a broadcast by the presenter amongst their “greatest moments” and a radio documentary celebrating his achievements was produced in the last few years.

After enquiries from Scrapbook last week, the BBC are searching archives for references to abuse allegations.

After claiming earlier this week that Savile's alleged victims were 'jumping on the bandwagon' for money, she has now admitted she could have been duped by the star.

Janet Cope, 70, was the former TV presenter's PA for 32 years, until she was suddenly sacked by him in 2001. The pair were so close he even gave her away at her wedding in 1990.




In a turnaround, she told the Daily Mirror: 'He was eccentric, manipulative, controlling. I was frightened to death of him and I wasn’t the only one. He loved the power he had over people.'

This led to 'peace' between the two countries.

Sir Jimmy Savile received a medal from Israel in 1979, for services rendered.

Reportedly, Savile visited Israel in 1975 to advise Israel's President Ephraim Katzir on a matter of security.

Reportedly, Savile visited Israel a number of times to offer his advice.

A Manchester businessman, Benny Sternberg, revealed that "Savile had been approached to explore the possibility of a meeting between Sadat and Begin because of his friendship with the family of the Egyptian president's wife Jehan."

AS tributes poured in for Jimmy Savile, who died on Saturday, he took one secret to the grave that the Jewish Telegraph once revealed.





The eccentric DJ, who numbered princes and presidents among his friends, may have been responsible for engineering the historic meeting in 1977 between Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian president Anwar Sadat that ultimately led to peace between the two countries.

Savile, who never shied away from name dropping those in high places with whom he was friendly, let slip during a conversation over dinner, no doubt deliberately, that he had received a medal from Israel in 1979, for services he had rendered.

He told me at the time that he had visited Israel in 1975 at the behest of then President Ephraim Katzir to advise on a delicate matter of security, under the guise of one of a party of Anglo-Israel Friendship League members.

Officially in Israel to take part in a TV show, he had talks with the president who asked him to repeat to the entire cabinet what he had told him.



“My theory actually bore fruit two years later and I received a presentation from the Israel ambassador in London.

“Even the latter apparently had no idea precisely what the presentation was for.

During his trip to Israel, he said, he did not arouse the attention of the media because they believed he was there purely for a TV show — “and we got away with it”, he smiled.

He recalled further: “When the president came to me, he asked how I was enjoying my visit to Israel.

’

“Next morning, I went to the Knesset and they interrupted a cabinet meeting and I told them the same as I had told him.”

He added that he had visited Israel a number of times since to offer his advice.

LEEDS hairdresser Howard Silverman was one of Sir Jimmy Savile’s closest pals.

And he has been angered by media reports that Sir Jimmy was a loner.

“Most of Jimmy’s close pals, and he had quite a few, were not celebrities, but just ordinary guys who came from working class backgrounds just like Jimmy,” said Howard.

“So it annoys me to hear people like Tony Blackburn say that in his private life Jimmy didn’t have many friends. Of course he did.”

Howard, 63, got to know Jimmy through the late Dennis Peace, who was the manager of Leeds’ In Time Club.

“A lot of the Jewish community would go there and Jimmy would be a regular visitor,” he recalled.

“At first we were just acquaintances, but fast forwarding to the 1970s we became really good pals when he and I started jogging together.

“At first we would often pass each other on Street Lane and before long we were running alongside each other.

“Then we started entering marathons. In those days I was still single so this led to seeing each other socially and dining out, and because of that he mingled with the Jewish crowd.

“In fact, he ended up speaking more Yiddish than I did.”

Howard, who dined out with Sir Jimmy just three days before his death, used to cut his hair at his Leeds centre salon for many years.

Sir Jimmy started supporting Jewish charities.

And it wasn’t long before Howard became a go-between, often asked to use his influence in getting Sir Jimmy’s support for many events.

“Jimmy also supported many causes in Israel and I know he gave a large amount to fund a hospital in Netanya.

“And then in the 1970s, he visited Israel himself to do a Jim’ll Fix It programme.

“It was at a reception there that he met the Israeli president Ephraim Katzir, who invited him to attend the Knesset.

“Jimmy disapproved of Israel giving back land and weakening its borders and he made these facts known in no uncertain terms to those in office.”

Howard will always remember Sir Jimmy for being a guy who knew the most important and influential people in the world, from the royal family to presidents, but who always kept his feet on the ground.

“He was a man of the people who never forgot his roots,” said Howard.

“One minute he’d be talking by phone to The Boss (Prince Charles) and the next minute he’d be walking through the doors of the Flying Pizza on Street Lane, Leeds, and chat to the bar waiter.”

When Howard married Janet in 2005 he asked Sir Jimmy to be his best man.

“I asked him not to wear one of his garish track suits so he arrived in a smart suit and tie and gave a hilarious speech. Jim certainly fixed it for me, who else can say he had Jimmy Savile as his best man?”

Howard would often accompany Sir Jimmy to concerts in Roundhay Park and can remember the time Michael Jackson performed there.

“Security seemed to be run entirely by the Americans who guarded the superstar like the crown jewels.

“Jimmy obtained tickets in the VIP enclosure but he wanted to get into the area back of the stage. Normally there would have been no problem, but none of the Americans knew him.

“Miraculously, Jimmy managed to squeeze through, but I was barred from entering by this huge American bouncer, so we were separated.

“I was just about to sit down on my own, when suddenly Jimmy appears with this guy who now has his arms around him and both are laughing.

“Jimmy beckoned me to come through. As we were escorted to our seats I whispered, ‘Jimmy what did you say to make him change his mind?’

“From the side of his mouth Jimmy said, ‘Whatever you do, don’t tell the guy that I don’t own Roundhay Park’.”

Howard also recalled Sir Jimmy’s impact when he visited the sick in hospital.

“He’d crack a few jokes and they loved it,” he recalled.

“Jimmy sold smiles for nothing and had an amazing ability to do that.

“With his time Jimmy was the most generous person and could make a joke of something and get away with it that others would not.

“He’d make cracks, they’d have a laugh and he was the master at it.”

Fundraiser Percy Stern, of Leeds, added: “There were innumerable occasions when Sir Jimmy gave freely of his time and presence without wanting any more than a thank you.

“About 50 years ago, at a time when he was at the top of the personalities ladder, I was one of the organisers of a Donkey Derby being run by two small, relatively unfashionable, charities — the Leeds Kosher School Meals Service and the New Central Vilna Synagogue — in a field near Shadwell.

“Jimmy had agreed to open it and, needless to say, it being June it began raining half an hour before the start.

“We began to fear that he would not turn up when, to everyone’s amazement, not only did he arrive, but he was driven into the field sat on top of the back seat of his Rolls Royce with the top down, waving his customary cigar — giving the event a flying start.

“Ever since, whenever I have seen or heard of him, I picture him that evening with his big grin in the pouring rain.”

Sir Jimmy picked the winning ticket to win a Ford Popular car in a draw for the Jewish Blind Society at a dinner in July 1962.

The £500 car was won by Cissie Simon, who attended the glitzy event with her husband and donated £50 to the society.

“It was the first draw we did as a group and was a great success, “Bernard Williams recalled.

“We chatted about who could do the draw that would be notable and I thought of Jimmy who we lived near.

“I remember chatting to him outside his home where he kept a Rolls-Royce and bicycle, explained about the charity event and he was delighted to help.

“Not surprisingly there was massive interest in the event, which resulted in a £700 profit.”

In more recent times, Sir Jimmy was quick to respond to a request from Physcap when it was the official charity of the GE Money Leeds half-marathon in 2007.

Representing the charity on the day, £26,000 was raised in what was a huge success.

Howard Lee met Jimmy Savile at events on behalf of the Cardiac Unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

“Jimmy had a great pulling power and always wanted to help people,” he said. “Everyone remembered him, they had a story to tell and wanted to meet him.

“Whenever Jimmy was involved we’d sell an extra 30-40 per cent of tickets.”

David Bransby recalled: “I wrote to Sir Jimmy about the half-marathon and he rang me one day out of the blue.

“At first I thought it was somebody winding me up, but soon realised it was really him.

“On the day of taking some publicity shots for the half marathon we arranged to meet at Roundhay Park near his home.

“I was with my son Elliot when we saw him walking down hill towards us.

“As he got closer Jimmy took off his hat, revealing his long silvery hair, then his coat and suddenly he turned into the instantly recognisable Jimmy Savile.

“On the day of the half marathon, he started the race with an aerosol hooter. Jimmy waved everyone off and welcomed everybody back.

“He mixed with all the dignitaries, sponsors and guests and was so at ease. Sir Jimmy was the consummate professional. It was a wonderful day.”

Pop star Jeff Christie, of Yellow River fame, knew Jimmy from his earliest days in the music business.

“Everyone knows what he did for charity, but Jimmy was also a great supporter of me from way back in the Outer Limits days,” he recalled.

“I’d worked with Jimmy since Mecca days and Top of the Pops back in the 60s. He was a fan and was thrilled when the Flawed Masters album came out.

“I took a copy over to his flat as a thank you and was stunned when he took me out for dinner at the Flying Pizza.

“Jimmy was a great character and a mentor. If we were being played on the radio he’d always say something nice about me.

“Jimmy was highly supportive. I’d knew him a long time and he was proud a Leeds lad had made it big at the time. I’ll remember Jimmy as an iconic figure and one off.”

Day late, dollar short from the Telegraph.

Harriet Harman, the Opposition deputy leader, said the allegations that the late TV and radio presenter abused dozens of young boys and girls had “cast a stain” on the BBC and other trusted institutions.

But at the time Savile was at the height of his fame, Miss Harman was calling for the relaxation of the law on child pornography.

She was a leading light in the pressure group now known as Liberty, which advocated the lowering of the age of consent to 14.

The organisation, then run by the Health Secretary under Tony Blair, Patricia Hewitt, even counted among its affiliates a number of extreme pro-paedophilia groups whose leaders were later jailed.

It means that any independent public inquiry into the culture that allowed Savile to abuse children for so long with impunity, could end up looking into the radical left-wing demands for the liberalisation of child sex laws that were made in the 1970s.


Tim Loughton, the former children’s minister, said “It is rather eyebrow-raising to see Harriet Harman’s newfound zeal for clamping down on sexual exploitation of children, given that she was decidedly dodgy on the subject when she was part of an organisation calling for the relaxation of these laws.

“What we are seeing now is the result of a culture of complacency which has allowed celebrities and others to cover up their crimes, and Harriet Harman must share some of the blame for not taking these matters much more seriously.”

As The Daily Telegraph first disclosed in 2009, in the 1970s the extreme end of the sexual liberation movement included groups who openly campaigned for the abolition of the age of consent. The Paedophile Information Exchange and Paedophile Action for Liberation affiliated themselves to the National Council for Civil Liberties, now known as Liberty.

NCCL complained to the press watchdog about their treatment by tabloid newspapers and in one article admitted it had “plenty of contact” with PIE, and argued that children are harmed by having to go to police and courts after a “mutual relationship with an adult”.

In 1976 the NCCL submitted a response to the Government’s plans to reform sex laws that was dubbed a Lolita’s Charter as it claimed “childhood sexual experiences, willingly engaged in with an adult result in no identifiable damage”.

The organisation said that children as young as 14 should be able to consent to sex, to reduce the “harmful effects of the present laws”.

It went on to say it is “logical” for the age of consent to be abolished but “we fear” it would not be “politically possible”.

Miss Harman, then a newly qualified solicitor, joined the group as legal officer two years later.

In April 1978 she wrote the NCCL’s response to the Protection of Children Bill, which was put before Parliament in order to tighten the laws on child pornography by banning indecent images of under-16s.

It claimed that the new law could lead to “damaging and absurd prosecutions” and “increase censorship”.

She suggested that pornographic photographs or films of children should not be considered indecent unless it could be shown that the subject had suffered, and that prosecutors would have to prove harm rather than defendants having to justify themselves.

The NCCL's submission stated: “Although this harm may be of a somewhat speculative nature, where participation falls short of physical assault, it is none-the-less justifiable to restrain activities by photographer which involve placing children under the age of 14 (or, arguably, 16) in sexual situations.

“We suggest that the term 'indecent’ be qualified as follows: – A photograph or film shall not for this purpose be considered indecent (a) by reason only that the model is in a state of undress (whether complete or partial); (b) unless it is proved or is to be inferred from the photograph or film that the making of the photograph or film might reasonably be expected to have caused the model physical harm or pronounced psychological or emotional disorder.”

It added: “Our amendment places the onus of proof on the prosecution to show that the child was actually harmed.”

Miss Harman left NCCL in 1982 when she was elected MP for Camberwell and Peckham, by which time several members of PIE had been jailed for conspiracy to corrupt public morals.

A spokesman for Miss Harman said: “This allegation is an outrageous slur. Harriet has fought for child protection from sexual abuse over the last 30 years – any attempt to suggest otherwise is untrue and malicious.

“It is completely untrue that she supported the lowering of the age of consent to 14 – she supported equalising the age of homosexual consent to make it the same as the age of heterosexual consent which is 16.”

ANOTHER male molested by the only "non-faggot at the BBC".

At least five former pupils have told how the DJ abused them during visits to Duncroft Approved School when it was under direct Home Office control.

They claim that the Jim'll Fix star was given his own flat in the building in Staines, Surrey, by the headmistress in what one victim described as a "paedophile sweet shop".

The institution for emotionally disturbed girls was under the direct supervision of the Home Office until April 1973, a report in the Daily Mirror claims.

It was visited regularly by government inspectors.

A former pupil Toni Townsend, one of three girls photographed with the star in 1972, told the newspaper: "Jimmy treated Duncroft like a paedophile sweet shop.



"He used to take his pick of the mix. He would wander around the school in a vest and tracksuit bottoms.

"He stayed in a flat on the top floor. He was the only man allowed to stay overnight. Who knows what horrors happened up there.

"The girls at Duncroft had been sent there by the courts for prostitution, drugs and because they tried to kill themselves. Who would have believed us against Saint Jimmy?"

A fellow pupil Carole Wells, now 52, told how Savile once assaulted her in his Rolls-Royce after the headmistress asked if she wanted to go for a ride with him.

She said: "He asked me my name and where I lived. Then he stopped the car and said, 'Are you a virgin?'

"I said, 'I'm not telling you that'. Then he put his hands down my knickers and started messing about with me. He put my hand down his trousers then took me back. I was crying."

Ms Wells said she reported the incident to the head who allegedly did not believe her.

In 2007, Surrey Police investigated Savile over allegations that he had abused pupils at the school but the Crown Prosecution Service ruled there was insufficient evidence.

The approved school was one of 121 across the country managed and owned by voluntary groups overseen by central government.

The shadow Culture Secretary Harriet Harman said: "The fact that the Home Office now seems to be involved underlines the need for an independent inquiry."

Savile was said to have abused his paper boy after inviting him into his flat to give him a Christmas bonus.

The lad was just 15 when the predatory TV star gave him £40 and then said: "Now you've got to really earn it," according to the Sun.

I hope so. His behaviour has been reprehensible throughout his entire career but if he decided to blow the lid off this whole caper, he may just begin to redeem himself just a tiny bit.

Steptoe and Son actor Wilfrid Brambell last night became the latest BBC star accused of child sex abuse.

Two men claimed the late actor molested them when they were children in Jersey in the early 1970s.

He was named following the scandal engulfing the corporation over the reign of abuse carried out by Jimmy Savile.

The actor, who played Albert Steptoe, is accused of attacking the boys in a back room at a theatre.



One of the boys lived at the infamous Haut de la Garenne children’s home, the focus of a major Channel Islands police investigation into child abuse.

He said he was taken to the Opera House, Jersey’s main theatre, as a ‘treat’ before meeting Brambell backstage where he was molested.

The other boy said he was also abused by the actor there. Both were between 11 and 13 at the time.


Former Jersey health minister Stuart Syvret, an outspoken critic of the handling of the Haut de la Garenne scandal, said the men were among dozens who had come to him with allegations, including some against Jimmy Savile.

He told the Mail: ‘In Jersey everyone covers each other’s backs when it comes to the child abuse situation.

‘The two boys came to me about Brambell because they did not trust the police. They came to me and told me they were sexually abused by him.

‘They were both around the ages of 11, 12 or 13 and didn’t know each other so I am sure they were telling the truth.

‘They said the abuse happened in the back rooms of the Jersey Opera House – behind the stage. One of them was a resident at the Haut de la Garenne at the time.’

Brambell, who died of cancer in 1985, was gay, although he had been married briefly in the 1950s.

He had a criminal record after being arrested in 1962 for soliciting in a public toilet in Shepherd’s Bush, London, and battled alcoholism in his later life.

The Dublin-born actor became a household name in the 1960s and 1970s playing a rag and bone man in Steptoe and Son.

His co-star, Harry H Corbett, constantly derided him on the sitcom as ‘you dirty old man’. Brambell also appeared as Paul McCartney’s grandfather in the Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night in 1964.


When he died at the age of 72, only a handful of people turned up at his funeral. He left the bulk of his estate, and a flat in Pimlico, London, to a close friend and flatmate, Yussof Bin Mat Saman.

BBC bosses are said to have hushed up the alleged molestation of young boys by a children’s radio star.

It is claimed they wrote to any parents who complained advising them not to take the allegations further.


The name has been passed to police examining allegations against Jimmy Savile.

The alleged abuse was first raised in BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson’s autobiography in 1999.

He said he was told of it when compiling the obituary of the man, whom he gave the pseudonym ‘Uncle Dick’, shortly after his death in 1967.

Simpson claimed his immediate boss told him to keep it secret.

But last night thousands could see his name on Twitter, after users followed the clues given by Simpson.

The man’s daughters and grandchildren said yesterday that the claims were ‘complete rubbish’.

Yesterday health chiefs announced an inquiry into Jimmy Savile’s reign of abuse at three NHS hospitals.

It will be run by the Department of Health itself, raising fears it cannot be truly independent.

Former barrister Kate Lampard will oversee the investigation to provide ‘independent oversight’.

It will examine why the presenter was given the keys to Broadmoor mental hospital, a bedroom at Stoke Mandeville and free rein at Leeds General Infirmary.

He allegedly raped and molested young victims for decades without anyone stopping him.

There are suspicions a blind eye was turned to the abuse because the hospitals reaped millions of pounds through Savile’s fundraising.

Labour is still calling for a full independent inquiry into the scandal.

Deputy leader Harriet Harman said: ‘I think what we need to do is get to the truth. Clearly something terrible went on for many years across a number of institutions and I think we need to learn the lessons.’

A Department of Health spokesman said: ‘[Kate Lampard] will provide oversight of the Stoke Mandeville, Leeds General Infirmary and Broadmoor inquiries as well as the Department of Health’s inquiries into the appointment and role Savile held at Broadmoor Hospital.

‘All relevant information from these inquiries will be passed to the police.’

Unlike the BBC, which has issued several grovelling apologies, none of the hospitals has yet said sorry for the abuse.

Savile, who raised £40million for Broadmoor, boasted that he ‘lived’ in a bedroom managers had given him at Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire, and said he could do as he pleased.

Tory MP Rob Wilson, an aide to the Health Secretary, has questioned whether Savile’s fundraising ‘made him untouchable’ at the hospital. He demanded an independent inquiry ‘so we understand who knew what and when they knew it’.

We know why these paedophiles rings have been protected.
We know why the paedophile scandals have been made to go away systematically for many decades, why everyone was scared and intimidated and warned off exposing the horrors that have been going on.

All the abuse of power leads to horrors and cover-ups and it must be STOPPED as it has got out of hand since 1997, as so many have been saying for so long.

We must now have the courage to face the truth about what has been going on in Britian.

Britain has fallen low because of the greedy, power-hungry who have lost all sense of decency in their fight for promotion, rewards, gongs and bonuses. Of course Jimmy Saville was protected and of course those who should be outed are known all ready.

What will be done?

Will The BBC continue it's Carry On Cover-Up Show it has been performing for so long?

It is up to us and OUR courage to insist on the truth and I for one, have switched the BBC OFF!

This is not the only horror the BBC has covered-up and played down to protect the people in power, is it?
