Post Riot police hold back migrants as Calais strikers blockade motorway with burning tyres

Hugely chaotic scenes saw French riot police trying to hold back large numbers of would-be asylum seekers trying to get to Dover.

“The situation is extremely tense,” said a police source in Calais. “Industrial action is leading to big build-ups of traffic, and the migrants are trying very hard to get into lorries.

“The jams are stretching along slips roads, and back on to the motorway. It is very fraught and dangerous.”

Some 100 workers from MyFerryLink are facing redundancy and they joined supporters blockading the entrance to the Tunnel from dawn.

With the undersea link closed, tailbacks soon started building up on the A16 motorway, as CRS riot police started to arrive.

Facing closure: employees from My Ferry Link (Picture: AFP/Getty) There were also “sympathy” strikes in the port itself, with around 50 protestors trying to stop ferries from leaving for England.

MyFerryLink – which used to be called SeaFrance – faces closure after Eurotunnel announced in May that it is ending its partnership with the ferry company, meaning some 600 French workers face redundancy.

Ferries which sail between Britain and France are owned by the Scop Sea France cooperative, which wants France’s Socialist government to intervene to protect jobs.

British cross-Channel ferry travellers faced disruption as a result of today's industrial action.

Eurotunnel said it had reduced its shuttle train services which transport passengers and heavy trucks between Calais and Folkestone.

A spokesman said: "Traffic is disrupted but there are still trains running."

All ferry services to and from the Port of Dover in Kent were being affected by the strike.

Scores of French Gendarmes were called to the scene A spokesman for the port said the situation was being monitored closely amid hopes that ferry services would return to normal operations "as soon as possible".

Aid workers have reported a "catastrophic" situation, with predictions that some 2,000 more migrants displaced from war-torn countries including Eritrea, Syria and Afghanistan could arrive in Calais over the summer.

British truckers have reported facing violence, intimidation and fears of being fined if migrants clamber aboard their trucks. Some now take lengthy detours to avoid Calais altogether.

British holidaymakers and lorry-drivers trying to cross the channel are being confronted with chaos thanks to a strike that had closed the port of Calais and the Channel Tunnel.

Striking French ferry workers blockaded the French port with a wall of flaming tyres, before forcing the closure of the Channel Tunnel by getting on to the tracks.

All ferries between Dover and Calais have been suspended thanks to the wildcat action by MyFerryLink workers, which started at 3.50am on Tuesday.

This afternoon, they forced the closure of the Channel Tunnel, invading the tracks. Eurostar services are delayed because they are stuck outside the tunnel and Eurotunnel services are suspended.

Traffic jams built up on both sides of the channel, with delays on other cross-channel ferry routes such as Dover to Dunkirk.

Around 600 MyFerryLink – formerly SeaFrance - workers are at risk of losing their jobs on July 2 following the decision by Eurotunnel to end its partnership with the company.

Tunnel bosses decided to abort crossings in the afternoon "for safety reasons" after strikers got on to the tracks, a spokesman for Eurotunnel said.

A spokesman for Eurostar said: "[Protesters] have broken into the tunnel and the tunnel is shut.

"As far as we know we don't have any trains in the tunnel at the moment but some are having to wait on either side of the tunnel.

"There will be delays to our services. At the moment we are extremely constrained."

Some of the 3,000 migrants camped at Calais are reportedly trying to exploit the strike by jumping on to slow-going lorries.

Post Calais: Muslims laugh at truckers for calling police and say they are too many to manage: "They"ve got knives and they are not afraid to use them?

Wildcat strikes at Calais shut down all ferry and Channel Tunnel services

Eurostar, Eurotunnel and ferries are all running today but are very full

DFDS today announced 400 job losses raising the prospect of more strikes

Lorries going through Calais are subjected to additional checks to ensure migrants have not smuggled themselves on board

Migrants ‘have knives and they’re not afraid to use them’, say lorry drivers

Travel chaos is set to return in Calais in the coming weeks after a giant ferry firm announced today that it was set to sack 400 French workers.

Danish firm DFDS revealed that it would lay off two thirds of the 600 employees currently working at MyFerryLink, raising the prospect of more wildcat strikes by union hardliners.

Strikes which shut down cross-Channel services caused gridlock at the French port, allowing would-be migrants to jump on to lorries in a desperate bid to make it to Britain.

Today DFDS claimed that it had ‘saved’ 200 jobs at MyFerryLink, which is owned by the company but run by a workers’ co-operative called SCOP Seafrance.

It was the prospect of upcoming redundancies which sparked the mayhem at Calais yesterday, leading to the cancellation of ferries and Eurostar services.

DFDS said in a statement: ‘After taking the necessary time to consider the interests of all stakeholders, DFDS confirms that it filed an offer today to the administrators of SCOP Seafrance.

‘If accepted, this offer is expected to result in 202 jobs for SCOP Seafrance employees.

‘It would also mean that DFDS would operate three vessels between Calais and Dover – one of the current ships on the route, plus the newly chartered vessels Rodin and Berlioz.’

British ministers had previously warned that there could be more strikes in the future if MyFerryLink workers are unhappy with managers’ proposals.

Transport minister Robert Goodwill told the Independent: ‘I suspect that the My Ferry Link workers are still in a bad place.

‘I’d like to think this is an isolated incident and that they’re now prepared to get around the table, but I think we’ve got more trouble to come.’

Union leader Eric Vercoutre yesterday threatened a ‘long summer’ of industrial action over the DFDS deal.

Eurostar trains and ferries started running again this morning but were ‘very, very, very full’ as companies tries to clear the backlog of passengers whose journeys were cancelled.

Eurotunnel freight trains were subjected to extra checks to ensure that lorry drivers – who say migrants are getting bolder with their efforts – were not inadvertently carrying stowaways in their vehicles.

Theresa May insisted that many migrants had been apprehended and stopped from entering Britain illegally in the past two days thanks to increased numbers of police on duty.

Today lorry drivers claimed that some migrants were carrying knives during their attempted break-ins, and called for French police to intervene to stop them climbing in to vehicles.

Post Cameron says looking at bolstering UK-French border after migrant surge

LONDON, June 24 (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday his government was considering reinforcing Britain's border with France around the port of Calais after what he said were unacceptable scenes of chaos involving migrants trying to reach his country.

"We have been looking at whether we can put more personnel and indeed sniffer dog teams on that side of the channel to make a difference," Cameron told parliament.

"There is also more work being done in terms of installing fencing not just around the port at Calais but also around the Eurostar and Eurotunnel entrance," he said.

Post British government calls emergency meeting over Calais migrant crisis

LONDON, June 25 (Reuters) - The British government said on Thursday it had called a meeting of its emergency response committee Cobra to discuss the migrant crisis in the French port of Calais and draw up contingency plans if further strike action exacerbates the situation.

Television footage earlier this week showed crowds of migrants trying to stow away on queuing lorries after disruption by striking French ferry workers halted traffic through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France.

"The transport secretary will chair a meeting of Cobra this afternoon to ensure we are working with the French and have the right plans in place if there are further wild cat strikes in Calais," a spokeswoman for Prime Minister David Cameron said on Thursday.

Cameron on Wednesday said the British government was looking at reinforcing its border controls with France at Calais after what he said were "unacceptable" scenes. (Reporting by Kylie MacLellan; Editing by Andrew Osborn)

Post Farage For Breitbart: Directionless EU Means Migrant Crisis In Calais Can Only Get Worse

Every month the European Parliament migrates to Strasbourg for a few days. The travel connections between the UK and Strasbourg are a nightmare and so I normally drive. Last month as I came back from Strasbourg and got to the EuroTunnel at Calais, access to the car entry was somewhat blocked by hundreds of lorries and I had to queue with the lorries for 15 minutes before accessing the right lane.

The sight around me was quite astounding. There were literally hundreds of migrants queued by the roadside, running across the motorway and trying to enter the stationary lorries.

I put the central locking on my car and couldn’t wait to get out of there. I wondered at the time why this was not getting more press coverage in the UK. Well it is now. The events of Tuesday this week with a lightning strike by French dockers, leading to an opportunist rush from migrants taking advantage of a difficult situation, lead to all routes across the channel being closed. It all reminded me of the famous Times headline: “Fog in the channel, Continent cut off”.

Be in no doubt that this crisis can only worsen. In the middle of the General Election campaign I flew to Strasbourg to give a speech. Our friends at the BBC described it as “Nigel Farage taking a break from campaigning”. What I tried to do was to inject a new element into the dull, negative campaign by pointing out that the boat loads of migrants coming from North Africa had the ability to turn into an exodus of biblical proportions.

This was based on my reading of the EU Common Asylum Policy document, where the definitions of who should qualify for asylum are set so broadly that it seemed to me that most of Africa could qualify.

Since that speech the numbers coming have increased and the approach from Commission President Mr. Juncker is that all EU member states must share the burden.

I tried to point out that when Australia faced a similar crisis in 2008, they responded by sending out a message: “You will not make Australia your home”. The boats stopped coming. And so did the drowning.

In contrast, Mr. Juncker sought to further extend the criteria of those who might qualify by saying that “extreme poverty” was yet another qualification.

My attempt to inject the migrant crisis into the election campaign failed because Downing Street briefed the BBC and other media outlets that we were opted-out of the EU Common Asylum Policy and that once again Farage was scaremongering.

Well let me answer this. The people attempting to board the lorries at Calais on Tuesday are potential illegal immigrants into the UK. They know that their chances of not getting caught and disappearing into the black economy are good. They also know that even if they are caught, their chances of being returned are remote and as tens of thousands arrive on the southern shores of Europe, the problems in Calais can only magnify.

If Italy and France and the rest of the EU really want to solve the migrant crisis problem, they could cynic

Post Eritrean migrant is killed at the Channel Tunnel after trying to board a moving freight train heading to Britain

Suspected migrant was apparently found unconscious at the terminal

Channel Tunnel spokesman says cause of migrant's death remain unclear

Incidents comes after the Channel Tunnel was closed to ferry worker strike

An Eritrean migrant has reportedly killed on the French side of the Channel Tunnel after trying to board a moving freight train.

The man died after attempting to get on a train at Coquelles, according to firefighters quoted by the daily Le Parisien newspaper.

The shocking incident comes in the week that Calais descended into chaos as the Channel Tunnel was shut due French ferry workers going on strike.

Hundreds of migrants have used the strike as an opportunity to try and illegally enter Britain by climbing into the back of lorries.

A spokesman for Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel said a suspected migrant was apparently found unconscious at the terminal at around 5am local time.

"I understand that the person was pronounced deceased but we haven't had any official confirmation of that," he added.

"We don't know what the circumstances are just yet, but obviously this is a very regrettable incident."

Angry French ferry protesters burned tyres and hay bales, gridlocking roads leading to the port, while migrants tried to take advantage of slowing and stationary lorries by clambering on board.

Dozens of migrants were seen in helicopter footage walking by the sides of motorways looking for opportunities to jump on to lorries destined for Dover.

More problems ensued as French ferry workers striking over fears they will lose their jobs then trespassed on to Eurotunnel tracks, forcing services to be aborted.

The problems come amid the worsening migrant plight in Calais where numbers camped there have swelled to more than 3,000 since April.

Aid workers have reported a "catastrophic" situation, with predictions that some 2,000 more migrants displaced from war-torn countries like Syria and Afghanistan could arrive over the summer.

Volunteers from l'Auberge des Migrants say up to 50 new migrants were arriving every day at the camp, dubbed the Jungle II, and there were not enough tents, blankets or food.

British travelers were being urged to keep vehicle doors locked in traffic and when unattended in Calais, in advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Post Calais crisis: Police report new wave of illegal migrants in Britain

Police forces have reported a surge in the number of illegal immigrants found in Britain in the wake of the Calais crisis.

As ministers held an emergency Cobra meeting to improve Britain’s response to the threat posed by future wildcat strikes on the other side of the Channel, several forces confirmed a “spike” in migrant arrests.

Bedfordshire Police said numbers of illegal immigrants found in the county had soared.

Although far from the coast, Bedfordshire is often the first stop for truckers who have come through the Channel Tunnel as they head north on the M1, and the force arrested nine suspects on Wednesday and two more on Thursday.

Last week – before the Calais crisis had even emerged – Bedfordshire detained 36 illegal immigrants in a two-day period, indicating that the situation in northern France had begun to deteriorate even before ferry workers blocked roads.

In comparison, last year the force detained an average of just 23 illegal immigrants a month.

Northamptonshire Police, whose patch covers Newport Pagnell service station between junctions 14 and 15 of the M1, also reported a spike in numbers.

A spokesman said three Sudanese men arrived at a Holiday Inn hotel in Flore, Northants, on Wednesday and asked to claim asylum. They were detained by police.

Residents in the village of Nether Heyford, about a mile from the M1 carriageway, called police when they found three men of unknown nationality sitting in their cul-de-sac.

In other incidents, two men from Eritrea were arrested in an industrial estate near junction 15 of the M1 after being found in a lorry from the Czech Republic, and another

Post Britain sends 2-miles fence to France to stop migrants hiding in lorries boarding Channel Tunnel trains

Security stepped up around the train line at Coquelles and Calais ferry port

Ministers want to stop people 'getting into the lorries in the first place'

3,000 people living in makeshift camp in Calais trying to reach the UK

Britain is to send a two-mile long fence to France to stop illegal migrants boarding Channel Tunnel trains.

Security around the train line at Coquelles and the ferry port of Calais is being stepped up after a dramatic escalation in the number of people trying to sneak into Britain.

Home Secretary Theresa May said she wanted to send a 'very clear message' that people will not be able to get through to the UK but ruled out searching all vehicles once they arrive on British soil.

Migrants have been seen trying to hide in vehicles waiting to board Channel Tunnel services at Coquelles and at the ferry port of Calais.

Up to 3,000 people are now living in a makeshift camp at Calais while attempting to find a way to reach Britain.

Ministers will hold urgent talks with hauliers this week to see what more can be done to tackle the problem.

The UK is to send two miles of high-security fencing to Coquelles to offer greater protection to lorries and cars which are crossing the Channel.

The Foreign Office has warned travellers to lock their doors in slow moving traffic and secure vehicles when left unattended.

In a sign of the scale of the challenge the authorities face, last year the Border Force stopped 39,000 people from trying to enter Britain illegally, twice the figure seen in 2013.

Mrs May said efforts were being stepped up 'to ensure that people aren't able to get into the lorries in the first place'.

She added: 'We are working very closely with the French authorities on this issue. We have been doing a number of things to increase security around the port.

'We are making a number of changes at Calais to increase security, we're also going to be putting some extra security fencing at Coquelle at the entrance to the Tunnel.'

Work will begin on erecting the fence tomorrow, but is unlikely to be finished until the end of July.

It will seek to increase security around a 2.5-mile section of track and platforms used by the trains which carry lorries back to Britain.

It follows the reports that an Eritrean migrant was killed on the French side of the Channel Tunnel after trying to board a moving freight train at Coquelles last week.

Mrs May was pressed by BBC One's Andrew Marr about why all vehicles were not searched when they also arrived in Britain, but she stressed that the focus of security was on the French side of the Channel.

'The vehicles going through at Calais and Coquelle are searched by French authorities, there will be vehicles searched by UK authorities too. 'We are looking to enhance our capability of doing that. We have enhanced our capabilities here in the UK at UK ports too.

'But in terms of the Mediterranean migration that is leading people up to Calais what we also need to do is to break the link bet

The French do not recognize miles, as a unit of measurement. Maybe, if the fence was Made in France, instead, they might take the offer seriously.

Because of course, the invasion of negros, other shitskins and eastern europeans is not by accident, it's by design.

Why people keep forgetting this and going off on a tangent (agreeing with the official narrative of, "Whoops look! Thousands more niggers just got in on a lorry".) is a real puzzle.

Post Port Of Calais closed - fresh migrant fear

The Port of Calais has been closed all afternoon because of striking workers

The shutdown is the second time in a week that the French port has been closed because of industrial action, and comes as French air traffic controllers announced a two-day walk out.

The disruption is prompting fears of a return to the chaos seen last Tuesday when migrants took advantage of the wildcat strike by sneaking onto lorries bound for the UK.

There are currently more than 3,000 migrants living in or near the port, with reports of British truckers facing violence and intimidation.

Today’s action has led to long queues of trucks heading for Britain, renewing concerns that they could be vulnerable to groups of migrants trying to board them as they queue in traffic.

P&O Ferries said it was unable to load or dock any of its boats in the popular French port and is advising passengers to rebook for a different day.

Migrants have attempted to use slow moving lorry traffic to board vehicles heading for the UK

A spokesman said: "Calais Port is closed due to industrial action out of our control. There are currently no ship movements in port.

"We advise that all non-essential travel booked for today should be rebooked for a later date."

It remains unclear how long the strike, which began at 2.20pm BST, will last.

A spokesman for the Port of Dover was unable to confirm to Express.co.uk when services would return to normal.

It is a fluid situation, we are monitoring it closely

He said: “It is a fluid situation, we are monitoring it closely, as soon as it gets back to normal we will let people know.”

DFDS Seaways services are still running to the French town of Dunkirk as normal.

Protests by workers for MyFerryLink – who were angered by a court ruling about the future of the company - have blocked boats from leaving the port and created a traffic jam of trucks.

The firm tweeted this afternoon: "All MyFerryLink services are cancelled until further notice. If you have a car booking we will try and transfer you to Eurotunnel."

Cross-channel train services on the Eurostar and Channel Tunnel are not yet suffering any delays.

Downing Street announced earlier that Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin will chair a meeting of the Government's Cobra security committee in Whitehall at this evening to discuss events in Calais.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "We are continuing to work with the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel and Highways England to assess the situation on both sides of the English Channel to keep the county's roads moving."

Elsewhere, unions representing half of France’s air traffic controllers called a strike for Thursday and Friday.

Ryanair said the strike will lead to the cancellation or delay of “thousands of flights” and said the timing at the start of the school holidays was “reprehensible”.

The strike will hit many flights in and out of France but could also disrupt longer haul journeys through French airspace.

And passengers whose flights are cance

Post Calais: Coach driver finds 2 illegals hiding in his vehicle boot. Despite alerting authorities he is fined 2,000

Laurie Bourne, 64, found two migrants hiding in the boot of his vehicle

Mr Bourne alerted authorities and then tried to drag them out of his coach

But despite pointing it out, he has now been landed with a £2,000 fine

64-year-old grandfather said he believes drivers are being unfairly targeted

A 64-year-old coach driver who discovered two migrants hiding in his boot handed them over to officials, only to be landed with a £2,000 fine.

Laurie Bourne, 64, from Basildon in Essex, feared his securely locked coach had been tampered with as he returned from a round trip to Calais.

His suspicions proved correct when he opened his boot to find two migrants hiding behind shopping bags on a luggage rack.

Suspicious: The 64-year-old driver feared illegal immigrants had got into his coach - but when he explained that to the authorities and tried to get rid of them himself, he was fined

Despite allying his concerns to authorities at the port, he has now been hit with a £2,000 fine as it is claimed the men passed the point where migrants become the UK's responsibility.

Mr Bourne, who runs L&R Transport Services in Wickford, Essex, believes lorry and coach drivers are being unfairly targeted by the authorities.

The grandfather-of-three said: 'When I saw I was being fined £2,000 I thought it was horrendous.

'I've appealed the ruling because I think it is unfair and unjust - I am not going to pay the fine as I have not done anything wrong.

'They're making the lorry and coach drivers responsible for the "illegals" yet they are not doing enough to stop them coming here.

'They are fining the people who are doing their jobs and working hard to make an honest living.'

The incident took place in Calais in October last year, yet Mr Bourne did not hear anything until he was hit with the fine this month.

He has written to appeal the decision.

The coach driver said a group of about 30 immigrants used a zebra crossing to block the vehicle's path.

Mr Bourne said it was at that point he thought two migrants used a crowbar to force open the coach's boot and sneak into the vehicle.

When the coach pulled into the dock, Mr Bourne carried out a string of security checks and told border force officials 'there's someone in there'.

The authorities entered the vehicle and discovered two stowaways on a luggage rack.

At that point, the father-of-two decided to take matters into his own hands and try to haul the migrants out.

But he was told not to manhandle the migrants by the officials.

The 64-year-old added: 'My coach was still technically in France - the men were handed back to the French police who simply walked them out of the docks and let them go.

'The immigrants were actually stood there outside the security fence afterwards, watching the bus as I was quizzed for more about three hours whilst my passengers sat and waited for me to be dealt with.

'These men had broken in to my coach, causing criminal damage, yet they walk away without charge and I am the on

Post UK removal firm hit with 18,000 bill for having 13 illegal immigrants in back of lorry even though it was them who reported it

UK removal firm found 13 illegal immigrants in its truck and reported it

But the UK Border Force ended up issuing MoveCorp Ltd with £19,500 fine

Company director called it 'unfair' because they had to prove checks done

He said haulers were having to do Border Force's job because it can't cope

A UK removal firm was slapped with an £18,000 bill after 13 illegal immigrants were found hiding in one of its trucks - even though the driver had been the one to report it.

The driver, who pulled over on the M25 motorway on his return trip from France, had been alerted to banging noises coming from the back of his removal lorry and called police.

MoveCorp Ltd's Mark Robinson tried to explain the situation when UK Border Force officials cut the padlocks to his lorry and made the discovery, but his company was still fined £19,500.

'Unfair': A UK removal firm was slapped with an £18,000 bill after 13 illegal immigrants were found in hiding in one of its trucks - even though the driver had been the one to report it (pictured)

The firm appealed and eventually settled out of court on a fine of £7,500 but with legal bills it meant they ended up paying around £18,000 anyway.

Director James Tennant, 39, has now hit out at the punishment and claimed haulers are being asked to do the Border Force's job because officials can't cope.

He told MailOnline: 'The most frustrating thing is that our driver could have opened the doors and let them go, but because he did the right thing and reported it, we have ended up being the ones penalised.'

Mr Tennant added: 'The fine came out of the blue. Our driver explained the situation and then we were asked to provide more details a few weeks after the incident.

'We did this and were then told we would be fined £19,500 - £1,500 for each of the illegal immigrants found hiding in the truck.

'The onus is on us to prove that we did all the checks and followed procedures but that's unfair. Because they have got such an immense problem we are having to do the work of the UK Border Force because they can't control it themselves.'

Mr Tennant said his driver had conducted all the checks prior to leaving France and added that it was unclear how the immigrants had got into the lorry.

He claims that at some point close to Calais they had broken the padlocks and then someone else had reattached them while the others were inside.

The incident happened in May last year but the director of MoveCorp, which is based in Walsall in the West Midlands and assists people moving abroad to Europe, said he had gone public to raise awareness of what he said was an increasing problem.

Mr Tennant said: 'I wanted to raise awareness for the industry as a whole because these people are so desperate and it's only going to get worse.

'Since it happened there have been a number of other occasions where immigrants have hidden in our lorries but fortunately our drivers discovered them before reaching the border crossing.'

MailOnline has approached UK

Post France, Britain to step up action to dissuade migrants

PARIS, July 2 (Reuters) - France and Britain agreed on Thursday to step up efforts to discourage migrants from Africa and the Middle East trying to stow away on vehicles crossing the Channel between the two countries.

The move was agreed after many of the some 3,000 migrants camping around the northern French port of Calais this week sought to take advantage of traffic jams caused by a French ferry workers strike to steal into stationary trucks.

Calais is one of the front lines in a wider immigration crisis in which European countries are struggling to agree among themselves how to deal with growing numbers of migrants fleeing conflict or poverty.

"Given the worsening migratory crisis in the Mediterranean and its repercussions in Calais ... the two ministers decided to boost cooperation, notably by topping up the intervention fund," said a joint statement by British Home Secretary Theresa May and French counterpart Bernard Cazeneuve after talks in Paris.

They said the extra resources would allow new measures aimed at preventing migrants from gaining access to Calais port premises from the beach and to securitise the Channel Tunnel.

"Moreover, joint information campaigns aimed at explaining to migrants the realities of the British asylum and welfare system, so as to dissuade flows of migrants to the Calais region, will be pursued and stepped up." (Reporting by Pauline Ades-Mevel; writing by Mark John)
